Autumn 2011

Ashbourne has seen an incredibly eventful and exciting half term. The academic year began with the much awaited opening of two new floors of teaching and social space at Young Street. The new development includes a large, spacious Art studio, a new common room, a computer area, and several new classrooms.

Another new addition to life at Ashbourne has been the large increase in clubs, trips, and extra curricular activities. Events beyond the classroom have always been a large part of Ashbourne’s ethos as they provide students with enriching skills and offer priceless and memorable experiences. Ashbourne now runs activities as diverse as Drama and Bollywood Dancing, Debating and Football, Food Society and Critical Theory.

Tour of London 9th September Ashbourne ran a tour of London for all new students on the 9th September. Having hired an open top bus, five members of staff took students all around central London. The group had lunch in restaurants on the South Bank and then spent the afternoon on Hampstead Heath, enjoying the views of London and playing games.

New Clubs This year Ashbourne has increased its number of clubs to feature several new ones. These include Japanese Club, Spanish Club, Debating Club, Food Society, Rambling Society, Fashion Club and Latin Club. So far these clubs have proven extremely popular, catering for the varied interests of the student body.

Upcoming Events The next half term promises to be as eventful, if not more, than the first. It will feature a trip to Old Trafford to watch a Man United Match, a three day trip to Paris organised by the Art Department, more trips to the Opera and West End Musicals, not to mention the Annual Christmas Revue which features dance, drama, music and fashion and involves over half of the student body.

Football at Ashbourne – Football has always been popular on a Thursday night, and this year proves no exception with around 20 students attending.

The Bollywood dancing club will feature at the Revue

London Cultural Visits Taking advantage of the wonderful cultural opportunities London affords, Ashbourne ran trips to the Royal Opera House to see La Traviata, The West End to see Les Miserables, and the National Gallery to look at paintings.
