With the double page spread I have got used an entire page as a picture page, to show the artist. This is a common technique that is used across many music magazines and magazines in general. My article is an interview with Dan KING (a new breakthrough indie artist) that will appeal to the readers and I’ve set it out in a format that will be easy for the reader to understand, for example I’ve used different coloured fonts to represent either the magazine or the artist.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Double Page Spread

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I’ve chosen a white male to be the artist on the front cover of my magazine, as this represents the audience and white males are usually associated with this genre. He’s also a young adult which again relates to the audience as they are of a similar age range.

It also has artists from the indie and alternative genre mentioned on the front cover, which again relates to a younger social group. The male artist on the front cover also helps represent the types of people that would be reading this magazine, as he seems to be dressed similarly to those of the same social background.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why?

IPC media is a distribution company that started up in 1968, and they mainly focused on magazines, however, over time the company grew and now cater for many different audiences, from niche to mass markets, through magazines, games and websites. Despite the fact they have a range of different magazines, from leisure to lifestyle, they have also created a very successful music magazine ‘NME’.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why?

Bauer is one of Europe’s largest privately owned publishing company. Bauer is a multi platform UK based media group that was built up around magazines and radio, and has now expanded to television and online media. With a huge range of genre’s of magazine from motoring to women’s magazines. Bauer also has some successful music magazines, such as ‘Q’ and ‘Kerrang!’

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why? The media institution I consider suitable to distribute my magazine would be ‘IPC’ as my magazine focuses on the indie and alternative genre. IPC have experience with distributing similar magazines like NME, and they also deal with niche markets like folk music with ‘guitar and bass’ so should indie/alternative face a sudden downturn in popularity, IPC should still be able to cater and distribute the magazine efficiently. http://www.ipcmedia.com/

4. Who would the audience be for your media product? The target audience for my music

magazine are young adults aged between 15 – 25 years of age. The audience should also have a general interest in music and a particular interest in the genre’s of ‘Indie’ music and ‘alternative’ music. As that is what my magazine has been catered for.

Some examples of artists suited for my audience:

(Click on the names to go to their websites) The Killers, The Kooks, Ed Sheeran,

Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I’ve suited my magazine to my target audience of young adults aged 15 – 25 years, by featuring a young artist of a similar age as the main image on the cover.

I’ve chosen the main house style colours as black and orange, as these colours aren’t extremely elaborate as you would expect a children's magazine, but it is still eye catching.

I’ve also mentioned plenty of artists from the indie/alternative genre for example: Ed Sheeran, Blur, The Kooks etc. Through out the entire magazine.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I’ve learnt a lot about editing software and how they work, as we made the magazines in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Indesign CS3.

I added effects to my text and logo in the same way, but I just selected different options.

I altered images greatly on Photoshop in order to improve the quality of the photo’s and to add effect to make them stand

out.

Adobe Indesign CS3

I used Adobe Indesign to do my double page spread and contents, as they both contain a lot more text than the cover. So I had to wrap the text around the images.

I also used the rotate tool to add more diversity to my images by positioning some at a tilt, and some with tilted text.

Similar to Photoshop I also had to add effects on some text and images on Indesign. This helped give more depth into my magazine and make it stand out.
