Welcome to The Hague, Netherlands, and the 7th annual EuroBrake conference and exhibition.

For the first time, we are delighted to be located at the World Forum in The Hague – this offers a unique combination of city life, with a rich culture and history, while also being close to the coast. The Louwman Museum, based in The Hague, houses the world’s oldest vintage car collection, while Delft Technical University, one of the leading institutions for engineering and technology worldwide, is also close by.

EuroBrake was created in 2012 to address the profound changes in the demands made by the braking industry’s customers and end-users, and to provide a forum for companies, engineers and academics working in the area of brake technology to collaborate. EuroBrake continues to develop each year and in 2017 we welcomed more than 1,000 international delegates of the highest calibre from 40 countries to Dresden, Germany.

EuroBrake 2018 offers a compelling agenda as we provide an increased focus on global rail braking technology. For the first time, parallel to other sessions, an entire day of the conference is dedicated to this subject, while other key topics include brake emissions and brake disc technology. Our international exhibition features 100 organisations, who represent the entire value chain from leading industry players to new entrants – it’s a great opportunity to meet new suppliers.

We are delighted that the EuroBrake Student Opportunities Programme returns to EuroBrake 2018, allowing us to welcome the next generation of engineers into the EuroBrake community. We welcome 50 students from around the world, who have access to an exclusive lounge, providing an opportunity to network with experienced industry professionals and gain career advice in a relaxed setting - we are extremely grateful to our sponsors who are supporting this innovative programme.

We are delighted that you have joined us in The Hague, for what is sure to be a fantastic EuroBrake 2018.

Properties, Interactions and Dynamics of Brake Particles and their Environmental Impact

Prof. Dr. Arno Kwade CEO, Institute for Particle Technology Germany

During braking fine particles are released and exposed to the environment. The behaviour of these fine particles is very complex and is determined among others by their size, morphology and interaction forces like van der Waals or electrostatic forces, but also by the surrounding fluid, e.g. the air humidity. Depending on their size and the air motion and humidity the particles can agglomerate, settle and/or move with the air flow. This behaviour of these particles in the environment can be described by basic principles of particle technology. Moreover, using advanced simulation methods like discrete element method coupled with computational fluid dynamics the behaviour of individual particles in the environment can be simulated. An overview of physical and mechanistic models as well as an introduction in possible simulation methods describing the brake particle behaviour in the environment will be given and explained based on characteristic examples.

Technical Programme Wednesday 23 May 2018

This panel brings together leading rail transport experts from both Europe and Asia to discuss future research directions and challenges facing the rail sector. Each panellist will make a short presentation on the status of the rail industry in their domain and to reflect on the latest research topics in rail vehicle braking. For example, how are efficiency issues such as automated train operation (driverless trains), “smart” rail traffic management systems and reduced braking distances being addressed in their domains. Regarding environmental effects, to what extent are rail brake noise (squeal), wear debris emissions and lightweight braking materials of concern? What other future challenges are there in the rail industry and how are these challenges being addressed in their own sectors?

Following the short presentations by the panellists, there will be general discussion chaired by Johannes Gräber, Knorr-Bremse, and Prof Yannick Desplanques, University of Lille, where delegates will have the opportunity to give their views on the future challenges and raise their questions with the distinguished panellists.

Brake Emissions Panel

Chair:Mr. Harald AbendrothConsultant

Chair:Prof. Dr. Georg Ostermeyer Technische Universität Braunschweig

The environment is a topic that raises mixed emotions around the world, in particular when the focus is vehicles and public transportation, engine exhaust, tyres but also brake emissions. This special Panel session will feature a number of views on brake emissions, including ongoing efforts to develop and agree testing, metrology and load profiles for brake emissions.

Brake emissions depend on friction couples, load profiles and load history. We see major influences from powertrains – electric and hybrids, also relevant progress with wear reduced friction couples.

Key discussions will include:• The level of knowledge around brake emissions

• The contribution to overall air pollution today and in the future

• Global regulations

• Global co-operation and collaboration

Cambustion

United KingdomEmail address: [email protected] number: +44 1223 210250 Website: www.cambustion.com/products

Nanoparticle emissions from braking systems fitted to vehicles are of increasing interest worldwide. Studies have suggested that the number of particles emitted by braking systems can be of a similar magnitude to those emitted from the tailpipe of a modern light duty vehicle, and this leads to an increasing desire to characterise the particle emissions from friction brakes.

Cambustion’s DMS500 fast particle sizing instrument combines a wide measurement range (5 nm – 2,500 nm) with 10 Hz data and a T10-90% response time of just 200ms, making it ideal for studying brake emissions which are characteristically short duration and potentially high concentration. The system outputs a size/number spectrum, which can be processed to calculate particle mass and other parameters such as surface area using suitable weighing.

Optional use of constant volume sampling allows real-time calculation not just of concentrations, but also total emissions per second and hence total number (or other calculated parameters such as mass) of particles emitted per braking event.

Discover The Hague

Following a successful EuroBrake in 2017, located in the historic city of Dresden, we bid ‘auf Wiedersehen’ to Germany and move to The Hague, Netherlands in 2018.

The Hague is a city on the North Sea coast of the western Netherlands, with a long political and regal history. As the third largest city in the Netherlands with a population of more than 500,000 residents, The Hague is home to the Dutch government and Royal Family.

Points of interest include: The Binnenhof is a stunning building, housing the meeting place of both houses of the States General of the Netherlands, as well as the Ministry of General Affairs and the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Most foreign embassies in the Netherlands and 150 international organisations are located in the city, as well as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

In addition to its political base, The Hague is also a royal city - King Willem-Alexander uses the Noordeinde Palace as his ‘working palace’. You may also stumble upon the House of Orange, the many historical monuments, the presence of residential and working palaces, royal thoroughfares and horse-drawn coaches.

The Hague has a rich, cultural history - a city with its own character and large diversity of architecture styles from the 12th century till now. Be inspired by its collection of 45 museums and wonderful exhibits in the many galleries. Discover the largest painting in the Netherlands; Panorama Mesdag. Admire the exquisite works of Rembrandt, Vermeer and Mondrian at the Mauritshuis and Gemeentemuseum.
