Helmut Karge receives IZA Award

The recipient of the 1996 Award of the International Zeolite Association (IZA) for long-term commitments and contributions to zeolite science is Helmut G Karge, Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin, Germany. The Council of the Inter- national Zeolite Association appointed the Awardee at the 11th International Zeolite Conference, held 12-17 August, 1996, in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Karge was honoured for his contributions to and achievements in the understanding of zeolite acidity, coke formation on zeolite catalysts, the study of sorption, diffusion and counter-diffusion in zeolites by Fourier transform IR spectros- copy, and the modification of zeolites via solid-state ion exchange. As recipient of the IZA Award, Dr. Karge will serve as an ambassador for the IZA to the world zeolite community and be responsible for educat- ing other scientists on the subject of zeolite molecular sieves.

European Science and Engineering Award

We received the announcement that The Exxon Chemical European Science and Engineering Award will be granted in 1997 to a European researcher. The award will support the initiation or the continua- tion of a fundamental or applied research on 'Stereo Control in Polymerization', and amounts to 40.000 ECU (ca. US$ 50.500). Candidates should be nominated before 15 February 1997 on a form which can be obtained (as can additional information) from the 'Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - - Vlaanderen' (Fund for Scientific Research - - Flanders), Egmont- straat 5, B-1000 Brussels, Belgium, tel.

13th National Symposium on Cata- lysis, Dehradun, India, 2-4 April, 1997

The thirteenth Indian National Sympo- sium on Catalysis will be organized at the Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun be- tween 2rid and 4th April, 1997. The Indian Catalysis Society has been organizing this biennial symposium at various centres every two years. As 1997 is the 25th year of the Catalysis Society of India, this sym- posium has been designated as the Silver Jubilee Symposium. The Catalysis Society of India, since its formation in 1973, has grown into a vibrant professional body.

Dehradun is a beautiful town situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in the north- ern part of India, 250 km north of Delhi. The town is located in the water-shed between the Ganga and Jamuna rivers and is one of the important towns housing a number of government organizations. Doon Valley is known for its verdant green surround- ings provided by the surrounding hills and scenic beauty.

This symposium plans to cover all bran- ches of homogeneous and heteroge- neous catalysis; particular emphasis will be given to novel applications of industrial catalysis related to petroleum refining, pe- trochemicals and fine chemicals. Other areas of interest to the symposium are environmental catalysis, fuel production, the upgrading of natural gas conversion, zeolite synthesis, characterization and catalysis.

Those who are interested in participat- ing in the symposium may contact Dr. Mu- rail Dhar at the address given in the calen- dar.
