TERENCE BLANCHARD’S E-COLLECTIVE will ex-plore various areas, centered

around jazz, but also includ-

ing various elements of blues,

R&B, funk and fusion.

Taking the unusual and inno-

vative approach of abandon-

ing the traditional "soloist/

accompaniment" demarcation

of straight-ahead jazz and

the E-COLLECTIVE will instead feature opportunities

for continuous improvisation

by every member of the band.

The individual solos are more

prominent, but never over-

whelm the music's collective

approach. At the onset, the

band's music will feature a

free, extended improvisation-

al method (similar to Miles

Davis's Bitches Brew-period

work), but will pull itself towards the groove and pre-structured forms.

The E-COLLECTIVE will feature a tight rhythm and blues-oriented rhythm section composed of Donald Ramsey (bass) and Oscar Seaton (drums),

and the music will have a relaxed, funky groove with Charles Altura (gui-

tar) and Fabian Almazan (keyboard, piano, synths) that will give the band

an appeal to a far wider audience. Perhaps a defining moment of Terence

Blanchard’s career, the E-COLLECTIVE will make jazz listeners out of rhythm and blues fans, and vice versa.

Perhaps a defining moment of Terence Blanchard’s career...

“Carter’s delivery has the energy to burst the seams of any setting. This performance similarly featured breathtaking cadenzas, unaccompanied torrents of notes and high-pitched squeaks that re-solved peacefully to consonance. the strongest impression was of a tight-knit working band extend-ing the reach and range of a classic formula. As a unit they retain the shuffles, bounce and romance that lie at the heart of organ combo jazz, but add an academician’s grasp of history and a knowing contemporary resonance.” Mike Hobart FINANCIAL TIMES

“Tribute albums and tribute bands are often content with summoning up old ghosts.  Saxophonist, James Carter, took a more rewarding approach on his excel-lent CD, CHASIN’ THE GYPSY and he continues that approach with his Organ Trio’s Tribute performances to the music of Django Reinhardt by offering up fresh takes on the music of the French Gypsy guitarist. He does so by substituting his own instrument in the lead role.  Carter, whether he’s playing tenor or soprano sax, shows off a sweet, sinuous tone; when he rein-terprets Reinhardt’s classic Nuages with a bass sax, the muscular sound is distancing at first, but then it wraps itself around the listener like an anaconda. These performances, like the CD do more than invoke Reinhardt’s spirit; they have a life of their own.” Christopher John Farley TIME MAGAZINE

WE’RE NOT CHASIN’ THE GYPSY ANYMORE – HE’S HERE IN THE HOOD! From James: “I personally feel that the music of Django can still speak volumes, even 60 years after his passing!  It’s true that in recent times (in part because of the commemoration of his centennial in 2010) that his music has been played by vast amounts of Hot Club-esque ensembles but with the cohesive power of the James Carter Organ Trio, Django comes to the ‘Hood in a very soulful, funky way’ that lifts the material from its traditional all-string rhythm guitar la pompe and allows the listener to hear Reinhardt from another angle with a new appreciation of what he brought to the jazz world on the other side of the Atlantic...”    Since 2001, I’ve had the privilege of sharing the stage with numerous luminaries of the Gypsy Jazz genre such as: Stochelo Rosenberg & his trio, Bireli Lagrene, Boulou & Elios Ferre(sons of Django’s guitar accom-panist Matelo Ferre), Dorado, Samson & Tchavolo Schmitt and Django’s grandson David Reinhardt to name a few, so I know the tradition to say most certainly that the Organ Trio provides a ‘hood pass’ for Django but you can still hear and feel the tradition!” Some selections of the repertoireImpromptuFleche d’OrTroublant BoleroBabik (Bi-Bop)NuagesDiminushingMabelLa Derniere Bergere

“Conjure up a list of all-time great blues harmonica players, and high up on it you’ll see the name James Cotton.” NPR

“The greatest blues harmonica player alive today....Riveting, aggressive, rock-ready blues-harp.” WALL STREET JOURNAL

“This is one of Cotton’s most rollicking albums, full of spirit and power. Cotton Mouth Man is as good as anything he’s ever done...James Cotton is still one of the greatest blues communicators of all time.”NO DEPRESSION

“The blues is all about feeling,” says Grammy Award-winning harmonica legend JAMES “MR. SUPERHARP” COTTON. “If I don’t feel it, I can’t play it.” Now in his 69th year as a profes-sional musician (starting at age nine), James Cotton not only feels it, he lives it. His overwhelmingly powerful harmonica is one of the iconic sounds of the blues. His skills are unrivaled, his story the stuff of legend. Born on a cotton plantation in Tu-nica, Mississippi on July 1, 1935, Cotton learned harmonica directly from Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) as a small child. He toured with Williamson and Howlin’ Wolf, recorded for Sun Records, and spent 12 years with Muddy Waters before stepping out on his own. Leading his own band, he earned his reputation as one of the most commanding live blues performers in the world—a man who could literally suck the reeds out of his harmonica from the pure force of his play-ing—one high-energy performance at a time.

In June 2010, Cotton was honored at New York’s Lincoln Center, where his friends Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Taj Mahal, Shemekia Copeland and others paid tribute to him in an all-star concert. In 2013 he toured as part of the all-star “Blues At The Crossroads II,” a tribute to Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and he continues to perform nationally and inter-nationally with his own high-octane James Cotton Blues Band. Nobody has more fun playing the blues, and the telepathic communication between Cotton and his band (whom he refers to as “my family”) creates inspiring, soulful music that leaves his audience on their feet, grinning and cheering for more.

COTTON MOUTH MAN proves James Cotton’s high-compression blues harmonica playing is still a true force of nature, while his songs and stories are a living history of the blues. As The San Francisco Examiner says, “James Cotton is an inimitable blues legend. His wailing harmonica blows them away. His improvisations on the blues are full of fun and good humor. The blues don’t get much better.”

“The greatest living blues harmonica player.”

LISA FISCHER IS A SINGER WHO REALLY GETS AROUND. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automobiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not be on the marquee, but she doesn’t care. She’s busy loving every minute of it. It’s easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won’t let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it’s the sweetness of her smile, her visible pleasure in watching her bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous-girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she’s their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on ‘Gimme Shelter’ has millions of hits).

The rest of her resume is pretty impressive too: touring, recording, and music making with Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keyes, Lou Reed, Louie Vega, Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, George Benson, Laurie Anderson, Lee Ritenour, Jackie Evancho (and many others). Along with many other top session and backup singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Patti Austin, and Judith Hill, “the greatest artists you’ve never heard of” (but whose voices are instantly recognizable), she’s featured in Morgan Neville’s acclaimed documentary film Twenty Feet from Stardom, distributed by Miramax in the US and scheduled for European premieres throughout 2013-2014 season. In the wake of the movie’s critical and popular success (and Oscar buzz) Lisa, Darlene, Merry, and Judith will sing the National Anthem at the 2014 Rose Bowl. And Lisa’s putting together a brand new band to explore some new territory. She’s on to a new leg of the journey, destination unknown.

When Lisa Fischer won her Grammy for Best Female R&B Performance for her hit single “How Can I Ease the Pain,” in an unlikely tie with Patti LaBelle, she almost missed the chance to take the stage and accept her award. Thrilled and amazed to get the nomination, Lisa heard Patti LaBelle’s name announced and started clapping so hard that she didn’t hear her own name called. Onstage, the two singers hugged and swayed together, caught up in the moment. Because Lisa Fischer didn’t just win a Grammy for her first solo single; she was also one of the backup singers on Ms. LaBelle’s award-winning song ‘Burnin.’

The first person Lisa thanked onstage that night was Luther Vandross. Lisa was a Marvellete when she first auditioned for Luther, who was to become her employer, her mentor, and her champion. She is honored to carry on his legacy, striving for excellence, taking care of business, getting up early, staying up late, showing up on time, letting the music take control, singing her heart out, night after night.

HAROLD LÓPEZ-NUSSA is a child of

two worlds. Born into a musical household in Cuba and

educated by his French grandparents, López-Nussa took

an early interest in classical piano before attending the

prestigious ISA School in Havana. At the young age of 20,

López-Nussa shifted his focus to the fiery Cuban jazz of

his youth, but not without the nuanced, classical touch of

his education. López-Nussa made his mark touring across

Europe from Verona and London to Vienna and Paris

before winning the esteemed Solo Piano Contest at the

2005 Montreux Jazz Festival and recording his first solo

piano album, “Sobre el Atelier.”

His latest album, NEW DAY, clearly represents an water-

shed moment - the rising star refines his style and adds color

to his artistic palette (listen for the Fender Rhodes keyboard),

all to further charm his ever-growing audience across the

globe. Lopez-Nussa’s music is an intoxicating blend of lush

melodies and quicksilver rhythms that owes as much to the

distinguished school of Cuban piano as to the pianist’s innate

virtuosity, which has been cultivated under the influence of

such great jazzmen as Keith Jarrett and Wayne Shorter..

ELEMENTS OF JAZZ “[López-Nussa’s] uncompromising, innovative

compositions combined with spontaneous, percussive improvisation reflect a

combination of notable iconic pianists like Chucho Valdes and Chick Corea.”

Mercurial and masterful, MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO has survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She has eschewed genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musicals trends for musical truths. She has lived through the boom and bust of the industry and emerged just as she entered — unequivocally herself. Fans have come to expect the unexpected from Meshell, and faithfully followed her on sojourns into soul, spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, all bound by a lyrical, spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution, and happiness. Groove driven, infectiously melodic and lyrically meditative, Meshell’s latest album, COMET, COME TO ME, finds her returning to the same well of creativity that launched her career. Her 11th release, it is possibly a culmination of all previous work: lush, vocal, seeking, wise, collaborative, and driven by the signature bounce and precise pocket of Ndegeocello on bass. The album features special guests Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Doyle Bramhall, along with long-time collaborators Christopher Bruce (guitar) and Jebin Bruni (keys), and Earl Harvin on drums. Assured of her place as an authentic musical thinker and an uncompromising artist, Comet continues to discover, examine, and explore all that music has to offer her and how she can return the gift. “Comet, Come To Me was a little labor but a lot of love. It was made with my favorite collaborators, and it felt good to channel the sounds in my mind after having Nina in residence for a while,” ” says Meshell, referencing her last album, a tribute to Nina Simone. She is especially inspired by the collaborative process that comes with making an album. “When I’m writing songs and recording the demos, I’m having my own awesome experience in my attic, or on a plane, or in a hotel room, just making my beats on my laptop. Then I get together with these people that I have an intimate musical relationship with, and we bring the songs to life.” A vast array of influences have informed all of Meshell’s albums, and there are traces of her native go-go, hip hop, R&B, new wave and punk in each. Each album has been a step away from the last, each used as a chance to investigate and integrate new sounds and ideas, and fans have been treated to everything from the deep-funk of Plantation Lullabies to the raw and confessional Bitter to the melodic, lyrical Weather. Possessed with instrumental gifts as diverse as her interests, Meshell composed, arranged and produced a jazz record in 2005. Her most recent release paid homage to Nina Simone, a kindred musical spirit and among Meshell’s most cherished inspirations. A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does and has appeared alongside the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston, and Chaka Khan. As for her own bass-playing influences, she credits Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Family Man Barrett, and Stevie Wonder. Meshell was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine and remains one of few women who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band

John Pizzarelli

JOHN PIZZARELLI

has had a multi-faceted career as a

jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader.

Internationally known for classic stan-

dards, late-night ballads, and the cool

jazz flavor he brings to his performanc-

es and recordings, he has recently es-

tablished himself as the consummate

entertainer and radio program host

with the launch of “Radio Deluxe with

John Pizzarelli” a nationally syndicated

radio program co-hosted with his wife,

Broadway star Jessica Molaskey.

Pizzarelli has been playing guitar since

age six, following after his father guitar

legend Bucky Pizzarelli. Bucky exposed

John to all the great jazz music of the

era, from Count Basie and Les Paul to

Django Reinhardt and, of course, Nat

“King” Cole. “I’ve always said in my

concerts that Nat “King” Cole is why I

do what I do.” Using greats like El-

lington, Cole and Sinatra and the

songs of writers such as Rodgers,

Gershwin and Jobim as touchstones,

Pizzarelli is among the prime contem-

porary interpreters of the great Ameri-

can songbook, bringing to the work

his signature style and brilliant guitar

playing.

JAZZTIMESJOHN PIZZARELLIDear Mr. SinatraReview by Christopher Loudon

Like olives and martinis, French cuffs and gold links, T-

birds and blondes, John Pizzarelli and the Sinatra song-

book seem an inevitable fit. Stylistically, the two Jersey

boys are about as distant as Palm Springs and Palm

Beach. Pizzarelli is pure, unadulterated jazz—cool genius

for the hipster cognoscenti. Sinatra was all heart, blend-

ing two fingers of emotional gutsiness with a jigger of

cocksure bravado. With Sinatra you always knew he’d get

(or already had) the girl; with Pizzarelli you find yourself

constantly hoping he will.

Where the two coalesce is in their respect—indeed, de-

mand—for superior musical environs, extending from the

range and quality of the tunes themselves to the arrange-

ments and sidemen. It’s what shifts both Sinatra’s assured

swagger and Pizzarelli’s gentlemanly swing into overdrive

and what makes Dear Mr. Sinatra so much smarter and so

eminently more pleasurable than the dozens of cookie-

cutter tributes that have preceded it (Pizzarelli’s equally

rich, intelligent nods to Nat—Dear Mr. Cole and P.S. Mr.

Cole—notwithstanding).

“Pizzarelli opened for

Frank Sinatra on a tour at

the very end of the leg-

end’s career, and he knows

that he’s no Sinatra. That

is the key to this disc’s

remarkable success.”

“He’s one of the best.”DIZZY GILLESPIE

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, ARTURO SANDOVAL was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz.

Arturo has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

Sandoval is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy Awards with Justin Timberlake and in his own right as a leader. He also performed at the Billboard Awards with Alicia Keys. He has been awarded 9 Grammy Awards, and nominated 17 times; he has also received 6 Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award.

Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with the leading symphony orchestras from around the world. Arturo has composed his own “Concerto for Trumpet & Orchestra”, and has performed with the foremost orchestras in the country as well as abroad and recorded John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra.

After his classic acoustic albums in the 1960s, the change that was in the air during the 70s enticed RAMSEY LEWIS toward the electric realm. With this new sound, he collaborated with the enigmatic and iconic, Earth, Wind & Fire. SUN GODDESS, the result of this creative summit, is an album with sleek grooves and gorgeous melodies that continues to flow with the upliftng and positive vibes of that time. Listening to BOBBY McFERRIN sing may be hazardous to your preconceptions. Side effects may include unparalleled joy, a new perspective on creativity, rejection of the

predictable, and a sudden, irreversible urge to lead a more spontaneous existence.

“There are essentially two categories of singers in this world: McFerrin and everyone else.” CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“Bobby McFerrin’s greatest gift to his audience may be changing them from spectators into celebrants and transforming a concert hall into a

playground, a village center, a joyous space.” LA TIMES

For decades BOBBY MCFERRIN has broken

all the rules. The 10-time Grammy winner

has blurred the distinction between pop

music and fine art, goofing around barefoot

in the world’s finest concert halls, exploring

uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a

whole new generation of a cappella singers

and the beatbox movement. His latest

album, spirityouall, is a bluesy, feel-good

recording, an unexpected move from the

music-industry rebel who singlehandedly

redefined the role of the humanvoice

with his a cappella hit “Don’t Worry, Be

Happy,” his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma,

Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic,

his improvising choir Voicestra, and his

legendary solo vocal performances.

It’s been the quietest and most polite of

revolutions. Bobby McFerrin was always an

unlikely pop star. He created a lasting ear-

worm of a #1 hit early in his career. Then

he calmly went back to pursuing his own

iconoclastic musical journey, improvising

on national television, singing melodies

without words, spontaneously inventing

parts for 60,000 choral singers in a stadium

in Germany, ignoring boundaries of genre,

defying all expectations.

Bobby’s history as an instrumentalist and

bandleader is key to understanding his

innovative approach to mapping harmony

and rhythm (as well as melody) with his

voice. “I can’t sing everything at once,” he

says, “but I can hint at it so the audience

hears even what I don’t sing.” All that

pioneer spirit and virtuosity has opened

up a great big sky full of new options for

singers. But virtuosity isn’t the point. “I try

not to “perform” onstage,” says Bobby. “I try

to sing the way I sing in my kitchen, because

I just can’t help myself. I want audiences

to leave the theatre and sing in their own

kitchens the nextmorning. I want to bring

audiences into the incredible feeling of joy

and freedom I get when I sing. “

“One of the most musically gifted performers on the face of the earth” LA TIMES

“If the world is a global village, then this is its local folk music.” NEW YORK NEWSDAY

“His vocal mastery is so complete that seeing him perform is unabashed fun.” THE PHILADELPHIA TRIBUNE

“McFerrin’s ground-zero signature is pure enthusiasm. No matter what kind of music he happens to be performing

. .. he throws himself into it totally, his infectious smile challenging the audience to enjoy the performance as

much as he does. Mozart or Gershwin, it doesn’t matter. Simply listen and be moved.”
