2. EU TRADE – KEY FINDINGS
The European Union is a net importer of golf equimpent. In physical terms, imports
consistently exceeded exports from 2007-2013. However, the difference in the trade
balance was less significant in value terms due to high export prices.
The countries with the highest levels of production in 2013 were the United Kingdom
(1,536.26 thousand EUR), France (525.67 thousand EUR) and Portugal (9.75 thousand
EUR), which together accounted for 100% of total output. These countries showed
positive dynamic: the United Kingdom (+2.8%), France (+2.6%) and Portugal (+2.6%).
China, the USA, Thailand and Viet Nam were the main suppliers of golf clubs and other
golf equipment into the EU, with a combined share of 91.4% of total imports in 2013.
The fastest growing suppliers from 2007-2013 were Thailand (+57.3% per year) and Viet
Nam (+51.0% per year). China significantly strengthened its position in the European
imports structure by gaining 24.5 percentage points.
In 2013, Switzerland (34.7%), Norway (17.3%), South Africa (10.6%) and the USA
(9.3%) were the main destinations of EU exports, and together made up 71.9% of total
exports in physical terms. While the share of Switzerland increased, the share of the USA
illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively
stable throughout the analyzed period.
The United Kingdom dominates in the EU golf clubs and other golf equipment production
and trade. In 2013, the United Kingdom exported the majority of its total output. Of this
amount, 21.5% was supplied to Germany, where the United Kingdom golf clubs and
other golf equipment held 80.4% share of total Germany consumption.
