Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide

educational technology

services that enhance teaching

and learning.

What is a Flipped Classroom?

The Flipped Classroom IS:

● A means to increase interaction and personalized contact time between students and teachers.

● An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning.

● A classroom where the teacher is not the "sage on the stage", but the "guide on the side".

● A blending of direct instruction with constructivist learning.● A classroom where students who are absent due to illness or

extra-curricular activities such as athletics or field-trips, don't get left behind.

● A class where content is permanently archived for review or remediation.

● A class where all students are engaged in their learning.● A place where all students can get a personalized education.

The Flipped Classroom is NOT:

● A synonym for online videos. When most people hear about the flipped class all they think about are the videos. It is the interaction and the meaningful learning activities that occur during the

face-to-face time that is most important.● About replacing teachers with videos.● An online course.● Students working without structure.● Students spending the entire class staring at a

computer screen.● Students working in isolation.

Review:

What questions/comments do you have after watching the Flipped videos?

Pros of the Flipped Classroom

1. Allows for Individualized, Differentiated , and Personalized Instruction

2. Allows for more 1 to 1 instructional time3. Allows teachers to gauge their students level of

knowledge before they come to class4. Students have a voice in the direction of learning through

comments and questions5. Students experience the information before coming to

class6. Topic information is shared with students as well as

parents and the community7. 24/7 access to the materials8. Students have the opportunity to create their own videos

What are students saying?

“In previous math classes, we had to work at the pace of the slowest kids, and that’s fine, but it’s nice to have the lectures under your belt and then work on the problems at your own pace.”

“The ability to know the amount of time you would need for calc homework (is what I like most)”

“Being able to re-watch the videos as many times as I needed. How I felt like an independent learner.”

Cons of the Flipped Classroom

1. Access2. Students may feel uncomfortable working in groups3. Homework is homework – What if students do not

complete the assignment?4. Lecture is still a lecture even if it is in video format5. Time to create or find videos

What are students saying?

“Sometimes I feel as if the way the class is run causes me to take longer to understand the material than if it was being taught in class”

“If you fall behind because you were slacking off, it takes a lot of time to catch up.”

“…being able to work on problems in class helps get to the root of issues that I may have, rather than struggling endlessly with them at home.”
