Analysis and Design of 4 Story Steel Building Frame

ETABS Version 8.5.5

Lecture 2

Page 2: ETABS TUTORIAL

Structure to be analyzed and design:

The data of the structure are in the upcoming slides.

Page 3: ETABS TUTORIAL

Problem:

• All columns fixed at their bases.

• Floor height is 3m.

• Other dimensions are as shown in the plan.

• Loads from the partition, floors are considered.

• Perform an optimized design.

• Report the optimized sections as your result.

• Report how many members fail stress check.

Select the units

Select the grid

Give the details for

grid as shown

Then Press ok

Defining sections:In order to draw beams and columns, we have to import sections.Go toDefineSection PropertiesImport I/Wide Flange

Page 8: ETABS TUTORIAL

Select ISMB (100 to 300) sections and press ok

Now select Add Auto select List

Page 9: ETABS TUTORIAL

Creation of auto selection list

Select OK to create auto selection list

Select all beams using shift key and then press add

Write the name

Page 10: ETABS TUTORIAL

Select similar stories here

Go to Plan view to draw beams & columns

Select beam List here

Modeling of the structure:

Defining Load cases:

Go to DefineStatic Load casesType Wall(Load) Select(Super Dead)

Add New Load CaseOk

Page 14: ETABS TUTORIAL

Select the beams(Exterior) you want to apply distributes load: Go to AssignFrame/Line LoadsDistributed

Page 15: ETABS TUTORIAL

Select wall here Select direction

Give the value of Load Similarly repeat the same process for interior partition walls

Page 16: ETABS TUTORIAL

Select all the areas to apply Live Load

Select Live here Type value as 2 Select units properly

Fixing the supports:

Go to Base view Select the joints you want to apply the foundation reaction

Go to Assign(Menu)Joint/pointPoint SpringsGive the values from the foundations table

Page 18: ETABS TUTORIAL

Go to Analyze menu to run the analysis

Go to Display Menu to see different Analysis results like reactions(support),Bending moment diagram e.t.c

Go toDesignSteel Frame DesignStart Design/check of structure

Analysis and design sections differ, so please select NO to continue the optimized design process.

Page 20: ETABS TUTORIAL

The members which failed in capacity check must be reassigned. Select YES to select them.

Page 21: ETABS TUTORIAL

The members capacities are shown by different colors.Un lock the model to reassign the selected members.

Member in red color are in critical condition

Page 22: ETABS TUTORIAL

Go to AssignFrame LineFrame sectionImport sections upto ISMB 600 and assign ISMB600.

Page 23: ETABS TUTORIAL

Re run analysis and design. Verify whether all members passed or not. If some members still exceed capacity repeat the process explained above to reach safe design.

Page 24: ETABS TUTORIAL

If the imported sections are not sufficient to meet your capacity requirement you have to create a section and assign it.

For creating a section Go to

Add I/wide flange section and give suitable dimensions to meet your requirement.

And repeat the same process to reach safe design.
