BYMT Showcase Concerts ~ Festival of Winds

Welcome to the BYMT Festival of Winds 2019

We are delighted to welcome you to our FESTIVAL

OF WINDS 2019. This afternoon and evening

reflects the strength and depth of musical talent

that has been nurtured by outstanding and

dedicated groups of teachers and musical

directors, who make concerts like this

possible. Recent Wind Band successes have seen

o u r mus i c i ans pe r fo rm i ng a t t he

Lisbon International Youth Music Festival (Lisbon

Music Fest) in July 2018 as well as at Kneller Hall

(The Royal Military School of Music).

We are particularly thankful to the Corps of Army Music and specifically to

the Band of the Grenadier Guards, who have supported us throughout the

year. Today they have helped out with our Learn To Play event and will be

performing alongside our young musicians in the afternoon concert.

I also wish to mention that 2019 is the Year of the Horn and we are

delighted to have further support from the London Music Fund in

supporting our promotion of this “endangered species” instrument.

2019 continues to see the growth of wind, brass and percussion players via

our Band on the Run programme and this model is starting to receive some

welcomed interest from Music Education Hubs across England.

We very much hope that you enjoy the concert and thank you for your

support of Bromley Youth Music Trust.

We would finally like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Trustees,

Patrons, and Sponsors, in particular Liberata and Clarkson Wright & Jakes

for their continued support as BYMT strives to deliver on its motto ‘Music

Changes Lives’

The Band of the Grenadier Guards is the oldest of all of the

bands in the British Army, with a history dating back over 333

years. King Charles II commissioned players to the First

Regiment of Foot Guards in 1685. The Regiment was to

become known as the Grenadier Guards after their victory on

the battlefield at Waterloo.

Charles II death in 1685 was so significant for the band that

until the Second World War, the Bass Drummer (known

officially as The Regimental Timebeater), wore a black

armband in mourning of the king's death.

The band went to Paris in 1815 as part of the victory celebrations after the Battle of

Waterloo and in 1872 the band were the first British uniformed soldiers to enter the

United States since the War of 1812. In the modern era, In 2003 The Band toured the

US, where it gave performances over a period of three months, at over sixty venues,

visiting forty states. The Band often tours overseas and has visited Belgium, Denmark,

Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Bosnia, and Australia.

One of the band's admirers during the 18th century was George Frideric Handel. He

demonstrated this by presenting the march from Scipio to the regiment before he

included it in his opera of that name when it was first performed in 1726. George II

gave Handel the task of scoring the Music for the Royal Fireworks, most commonly

performed with strings, for the king's own musicians, who were wind players from his

foot guards. Handel would have undoubtedly come into contact with musicians from

the Grenadier Guards during the first performance at Vauxhall Gardens in 1749.

The Band has served 15 monarchs over 325 years with dedication and pride. It has

been present at all the major royal occasions: births, coronations, weddings and

funerals. It raised morale during the darkest hours of the Second World War; its

uplifting music ushered in a new beginning at the coronation of the present queen.

The Band of the Grenadier Guards has been filling the streets of London with music

and colour for over three centuries, and the “British Grenadiers March” is one of the

most recognisable and memorable tunes in the world and part of Britain's musical

heritage.

Today we welcome a Brass Quintet and a Clarinet Quartet from The Band to join our

young musicians for what is sure to be an uplifting and inspirational concert.
