Foreword by Prof. Hervé Mathe

Professor and Dean of ESSEC Asia-Pacific, President of the Institute for Strategic Innovation and Services

Business schools have a duty to provide an appropriate setting in which to address the challenges currently facing societies and the environment. New business models must be implemented for every industry and region. Co-creation, serial experimentations and the application of design thinking are required to formulate winning answers.ESSEC has devised innovative ways to deliver economic and business education since its founding in Paris in 1907. In Asia, we launched exchange programmes with leading Japanese and Indian universities decades ago. Multiple other initiatives have been implemented since then, including executive education and dual degree programmes in China and throughout the entire region. In 2005, we established our campus in Singapore as a “gateway to Asia”, focusing mainly on offering our students and scholars from Europe a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the world’s fastest-growing and most strategic economic area.

ESSEC has subsequently expanded into a fully-fledged multicultural academic institution spread across campuses in Europe and Asia, strengthened by the resources of its network of partner institutions in America and other regions. In Singapore, ESSEC is nurturing a growing vibrant and research-driven learning community. We have introduced numerous graduate programmes – including the leading Master of Science in Management in addition to a series of specialised master degree courses, executive workshops and advanced programmes – in order to provide optimal long-term value to students, managers and organisations all over the region. Integrating social sciences into the curriculum, reintroducing emotional intelligence in decision-making processes, extending the creative ability of managers, and running consulting projects for the good of the public are just a few of the initiatives we have taken to manage the current necessity to reinvent business education.

To engage in ongoing discussions with businesses and governments, ESSEC Asia-Pacific frequently organises public lectures and professional events with themes central to our fields of study: geopolitics and globalisation, cross-border innovation, healthcare economics and management, the evolution of finance, the global supply chain, environmental and social issues, to name a few. Based on the community’s pedagogical creativity and strong values, we believe that education today must blend field experience with in-depth learning, and geographical mobility with an articulated understanding of cultural diversity. This is key to address the complexity of a globalised economy and to develop the skills required to formulate and implement positive value-enhancing decisions. ESSEC Asia-Pacific has defined itself as the place to learn about innovative problem solving, strengthen the self-confidence demanded of responsible leaders and finally fight for a better world.

ESSEC is guided by the values of dialogue, creativity, innovation, responsibility, excel-lence, and openness as the basis for training tomorrow’s business and government leaders. Our history dates back to 1907. Since then, ESSEC has become one of the world’s top management schools, while remaining true to the pledge of its founders to promote eth-ics and openness to the world. In a fast-changing world, ESSEC’s mission is to prepare future managers and leaders to deal with the most complex and global issues and to con-tribute to equitable social change. We strive to give students and working professionals a top-level education and guide them toward lasting professional success in line with their personal career plan. Constantly seek-ing educational innovation, our academic programmes are based on the students’ autonomy, responsibility and freedom, with a strong focus on experience in business,

international exposure and a taste for entrepreneurship. Our mission is also to help improve the management of organisations by producing knowledge, concepts and methods that meet the challenges of our age. For over forty years, the ESSEC Research Centre has been coordinating the activity of professors and researchers in strategic fields such as consumer behaviour, economics, finance, governance, entrepreneurship, marketing analytics, and corporate sociology. Our research covers a full range of management issues to foster the most relevant and effective solutions for companies and decision-makers. In connection with top academic institutions and major companies throughout the world, ESSEC encourages the development of a multipolar world open to a diversity of management and governance methods.

Asia is going through massive social and economic change. It is one thing to watch it from a distance but quite another to be in Asia

physically and understand this phenomenon from close quarters. Singapore in particular is a vibrant, well-connected city, which is very important for collecting data, gaining access to businesses

in the region and conducting original field work.ARIJIT CHATTERJEEAssociate Professor, Management Department

Programmes An inspiring learning experience

Driven by its values and its commitment to

academic excellence and innovation, ESSEC Asia-Pacific offers a range of

programmes to equip students and executive

participants with essential skills and

foster new ways of thinking.

TAN OOI BOONVice-President Marketing at Singapore Press Holdings

The executive workshop on Marketing Analytics on Digital Platforms has opened up my mind and given me new insights. I really

liked the case studies from different countries, with up-to-date market intelligence on what industries are doing.

ESSEC Asia-Pacific has defined a new kind of “Learning Partnership Model” that addresses the specific needs of companies and execu-tives by stimulating creativity and developing global outlooks and expertise. Our portfolio of executive programmes is designed to keep top executives, managers and government officers ahead of business trends, and maintains the right balance between theory and practice. In partnership with leading organisations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and other major Asian cities, ESSEC Asia-Pacific offers a series of open-enrolment Executive Workshops and professional forums address-

ing a wide range of issues, such as social media and digital marketing, negotiation, business model and service innovation, cross-cultural team leadership, global supply chain management, luxury brand management, halal business, and health technology assess-ment. These are complemented by educa-tional programmes tailored to the specific needs of organisations and individuals. Through close collaboration with our corporate partners, our customised programmes are designed to deliver targeted, in-depth learning and optimised solutions.

The ASP is a good illustration of ESSEC’s focus on “outside of the box” learning. The ASP was designed in partnership with CapGemini Consulting to study innovative business models in Asia. Students in the final year of the Master of Science in Management work for three months on an issue raised by a company or organisation. After a one-month immersion period in an Asian country, they provide partner companies with strategic recommen-dations for development. Students also write

the business model they have examined under the supervision of a faculty member and

The Asian Strategy Project is probably one of the most innovative programmes in terms of learning and business competencies. It offers students an invaluable opportunity to sharpen their consulting and research skills.

The ASP was an amazing experience. Having an internship with any big Western company is

something great, but learning from a small Asian company and dealing with local culture and working

habits is something completely different.

In order to nurture educational development and increase mutual awareness of European and Asian economic characteristics in the larger context of globalisation, ESSEC Asia-Pacific offers a range of high-level generalist programmes and specialised masters. These include the Global MBA, the ESSEC Exectuive MBA Asia-Pacific (launch of Singapore intake in October 2014), the Msc in Management of Health Industries, the Master of Science in Management, the Advanced Master in Strategy and Management of International Business, the Advanced Master in Financial Techniques, the Advanced Master in International Food Management Industry, the Advanced Master in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, the Advanced Master in International Purchasing Management and the Bachelor in Business Administration.

ESSEC Asia-Pacific also welcomes research work within the framework of the Ph.D programme. These selective programmes are all conducted in English and fully or partially delivered in Singapore with many opportunities for international and professional immersion. They promote direct interaction with the economic world, facilitating networking and the creation of professional opportunities. In addition, ESSEC Asia-Pacific offers extensive Career Services for its students in partnership with regional and multinational recruiters: career fairs in Singapore and Shanghai, company presentations, “get together” meetings, workshops, guest speakers and professional talks on campus, a mentoring programme with Alumni, individual coaching sessions, and more.

Spread across two continents, ESSEC Asia-

Pacific offers students an enhanced educational

experience and helps them shape their

unique career path.

Tomorrow Building one of the most influential

business schools in Asia

ESSEC Business School aims to become one

-tial in Asia by 2015. To achieve this ambi-tious goal, ESSEC Asia-Pacific’s development strategy will be deployed along four main strands. Firstly, it will continue its constant efforts to create and disseminate knowledge through vigorous research activity and its own institutes. Secondly, the school

looking to develop even closer ties with corporate partners, especially through

-grammes which combine academic know-ledge and experiential learning tailored to the needs of companies and business professionals across the region.Thirdly, ESSEC Asia-Pacific will continue to expand its range of selective graduate and post-graduate programmes. For years, ESSEC has been praised by employers for its

superior management education which blends theory and “learning by doing” approach. ESSEC believes that this approach is relevant to Asia and can be bolstered through a comprehensive range of pro-grammes offering insights from a global and Asian perspective. By 2015 ESSEC Asia-Pacific expects to have a larger faculty, more students and executive education partici-pants, and a concomitant growth in regular courses taught in Singapore. Finally, ESSEC Asia-Pacific is committed to reinforcing its unique research and learning partnerships with prestigious regional academic institu-tions. We have built our development on fruitful collaborations with highly regarded universities in Asia and elsewhere. The Council on Business and Society will play a major role in reinforcing the one-to-one par-tnerships with institutions, especially at the research level.

ESSEC Asia-Pacific sees gaining critical

intellectual mass and the ability to provide a

bi-continental experience to a large number

of students and participants as a vital

part of its strategy.

A strategic development plan

This deployment in the Asia-Pacific region constitutes a notable stage in the history of the institution which, more than ahundred years after its birth, is firmly laying down roots in a new continent

Agenda

With the support of Singapore’s government agencies, ESSEC Asia-Pacific is building a five-storey, 6,500 m2 campus on 5,430 m2 of land on Nepal Hill, in one-north business park. This area is dedicated to education and innovation and includes educational institutions, business incubators and high-tech companies. The facility will triple the school’s training capacity in terms of numbers of students and executive education participants, compared to the present

facilities at the National Library Building. The new campus has been designed to

participants. Designed by renowned Singaporean architect Dr. Liu Thai Ker, the building was inspired by both European and Asian architectural styles and aims to symbolise a bridge between the two worlds.
