ESMI Study Groups shall be established to satisfy a scientific community of interest. Study Group topics are reflecting the interdisciplinary aims of the society and shall be committed to high scientific relevance. Any ESMI member may join a Study Group.

Spin hyperpolarization has become a promising tool to study cellular, molecular and metabolic processes non invasively in vivo using mag-netic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). Biochemical processes can be monitored with hyperpolarized MRS, providing unique information on tissue meta-bolic and enzymatic activity. To date, dissolution-DNP and Parahydrogen techniques have attracted the most interest as methods to hyperpolarize

small biomolecules in solution for potential clinical applications, and have been increasingly exploited for metabolic studies in vivo. The applications of hyperpolarized MR have included studies of cancer and cardiac metabolism, from cell to translational large animal models. The University of California complet-ed a 31-patient study performed by scientists at UCSF (published in 2013), while several sites in Europe and North America are preparing Phase 1

clinical trials using a clinic-ready ver-sion of the DNP hyperpolarizer. The ESMI Study Group “HYPER-MR” is multidisciplinary by nature and aims to encourage joint efforts to advance the state-of-the-art in the field and to bridge the gap between basic re-search in hyperpolarization technol-ogy (DNP, PHIP, hyperpolarised gases) and novel biomedical applications in the field of molecular imaging.

Non-invasive in vivo small animal imaging plays a pivotal role in bi-omedical and pharmaceutical re-search areas. This is due to the many key benefits that imaging has over conventional methods: protocols and results are easily translated to clinical studies and diagnosis in pa-tients, longitudinal measurements can be performed on the same animal, one analysis can provide a multiplicity of molecular and func-tional parameters, and the number and stress of the animals can be dra-matically reduced. Unfortunately,

individual imaging procedures are not standardized. Sometimes even within one institution, many results cannot be compared because they depend on different complex factors such as anesthesia, animal handling, physiological parameters, data ac-quisition, and analysis. These factors can greatly influence the outcome of experiments, but are in general con-trollable and thus to a certain degree avoidable. Both the animal well-be-ing, as well as, pharmaceutical and biomedical basic research, would benefit from standardized imaging

protocols. Comparability of results and defined standard operation procedures (SOPs) would prevent duplicate studies and consequently contribute to refinement and reduc-tion. The aim of this study group is to standardize imaging protocols in a way that comparable results can be gained within different labs or pro-vide reference methods that can be used to establish comparable imag-ing protocols.

young ESMI groups Thanks for your initiative to create one strong imaging community!

A young ESMI group is part of the ESMI focusing on a country. A young ESMI group is initiated and led by young imaging scientists and open to all (young) members of the ESMI. The aim is to provide (PhD) students an informal entry into the broader imag-ing community and the ESMI in order to strengthen the imaging community in Europe. young ESMI groups should not compete with the ESMI or its ac-tivities, but rather be complementary.

A new era in CARDIAC IMAGING is showing the heart’s function and anatomy by methods that are com-pletely noninvasive. Long-awaited hardware and software improve-ments allow imaging the beating heart and deciphering cardiac blood flow. Motion correction and resolution recovery algorithms and specific imaging probes opens new avenues for imaging of the complex inflammatory pathology underlying life-threatening coronary events.Major progress in imaging is made through quantification that turns subjective images into objective measurements [...]. All this is hap-pening simultaneously with the

development of implantable artificial hearts and accompanying the change in the management and the progno-sis of cardiovascular disorders, today’s major killer worldwide.During TOPIM 2016 specialists from all fields of imaging sciences will share their expertise on new imaging approaches, confront recent results and discuss future avenues.

Since 2007 the overall concept of TOPIM has been that experienced, high-level international scientists and younger/less experienced scientists from diverse disciplines are spending one week together at an inspiring place and to provide a "think tank" for knowledge exchange and intensive discussion.

MULTIPARAMETRIC IMAGING

1ST EDITION OF THE TECHNOLOGY SUMMER SCHOOL

8

The success of the ESMI’s winter school in the French Alps – TOPIM an-nually held at the Ecole de Physique des Houches – drove the society towards the south and the warmth of the Mediterranean Sea. The idea of a complimentary summer school purposefully named TOPIM TECH, is realized for the first time in 2016.

It will be held annually in the beauti-ful city of Chania in the island of Crete. TOPIM, which is held in the Chamonix valley, is focussing on biology related issues in Imaging Science, while the aim for TOPIM TECH is to start a series of high level summer conferences fo-cussing each year on one hot topic in Imaging Technology.

Imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, PET, SPECT, US, optical and optoacoustic imaging that provide information on anatomy, physiology, metabolism, and molecular events have become indispensable tools in biomedical research fields such as oncology, neurology, immunology or cardiology. The ability to study the intact organism under normal and pathological conditions using non-invasive imaging strategies is of high value for basic researchers, drug developers, and also facilitates clinical translation.

The complexity of a biological system can hardly be captured by assessing a single characteristic but rather requires the assessment of multiple tissue parameters providing complemen-tary information. Correspondingly, multiparametric imaging solutions are becoming increasingly important. These advanced imaging procedures require multilevel synergies including (i) hardware, (ii) imaging protocols and workflows, (iii) data acquisition and storage, (iv) data analysis and (v) data interpretation.

The first TOPIM TECH Summer School will specifically target the interdis-ciplinary field of modern Multimo-dality Imaging bringing together engineers, physicists, computer scientists, bio-informaticians and biologists to define state-of-the-art instrumen-tation and methodology, discuss current trends in contrast generation and showcase emerging applica-tions that require or are catalyzed by multimodal imaging approaches.
