Dear Friend,

Behind each image in the 2014 Equal Voice News Calendar is the story of one of the 46.5 million poor people in our country.

Equal Voice News, a Seattle-based online newspaper published by Marguerite Casey Foundation, reports on the stories of individuals and families you might not otherwisehave the opportunity to read about.

Equal Voice News tells stories rarely told and raises voices rarely heard.

Why?

Because we want to change the public narrative as to who is poor in the United States and why. Poverty is not a choice. Poverty is people working two or more jobs to support a family. Poverty is low wages, substandard schools and a lack of affordable housing. And, poverty is about the impact of policy on families struggling to get by.

Because people living in poverty are the experts on poverty. If their voices are not heard, solutions to economic inequality will never be more than piecemeal and they’ll be someone else’s idea of what is needed for families to thrive.

Because policy affects poverty. Examining the connection between policy and poverty is the only way families and policymakers will develop systemic solutions that allow all families and communities to flourish.

These are the beliefs that power the journalism you’ll find in Equal Voice News. Through original reporting, we reveal important stories – personal stories – that we hope will help make lasting change. Recently, for example, Equal Voice News articles brought attention to:

• How coal mining and power plants on tribal lands in Arizona exact a significant cost on Native Americans.

• How immigrant farmworkers take great risks to support their families while working in the country’s $297 billion agriculture industry.

• How eminent domain – the “seizing” of private property for public use – might be used to stabilize neighborhoods with “underwater” mortgages.

At Marguerite Casey Foundation, we believe that change is possible. One path to change is our commitment to keeping the advocacy efforts of poor and low-income families in the public’s eye year-round.

Each of the stories in this 2014 calendar focuses on someone working to make the world a better place for all children. I urge you to take the time to read their stories and to read Equal Voice News throughout the New Year.

Then, join families and the foundation in acting for change.
