with this. I got it. To him, True RMS wasan intrinsic part of a meter. You can’thave a meter without it and so, it didn’tneed to be overstated. It would be as if wehad a label on our meter that said ‘LCDscreen’ next to the LCD screen.For this gentleman at the tradeshow, it

was a no-brainer that he needed TrueRMS capabilities in his test equipmentand it didn’t need to be trumpeted. Still,there are many, many electrical contrac-tors and technicians in other industriesthat don’t know what it is, or why it maybe important for them. And, since it’s afeature that usually comes

putting a badge on their cars that said“Fuel Injection.” With the badge, youcould announce to the whole world whatkind of fuel system your car had. To me itdidn’t make sense to go on and on aboutsomething like that.”“Even if it was new at the time, it was

like putting a sign on your car that said‘power windows!’ They were trying tomake the car stand out by touting some-thing that was nice, but that didn’t deserveto be mentioned on the car’s exterior. Inthe 90s, it was the same thing with anti-lock brakes. ABS badges everywhere.”Now I understood where he was going

Let’s be honest: when you lastbought a multimeter or clamp-on meter,did the importance of True RMS capabil-ities even cross your mind? Many electri-cal contractors have seen the term “TrueRMS” stamped on test and measurementequipment, but might have given it shortshrift.The skeptical questions come fast and

furious: Is it a must-have? A gimmick?An upgrade to get you to spend more? Is itsomething I’d even use?Plus, in this day and age, where bud-

gets are still tight, the premium expenseof a True RMS meter may not seem worthit. You may be looking at two nearly iden-tical meters in an electrical supply house,except one says “True RMS” and costs30-50% more.

Driving Home a PointMany electrical contractors still doubt

whether True RMS is really important.Consider this story:While I was at a major electrical con-

tractor trade show last fall, an attendeestopped at the Extech booth to take a lookat some multimeters and clamp meters.He picked up each one, looked at them,tried the dials, and held them in his handto gauge the weight and heft of each one.Then, the electrician smiled and pointed

at one of the DMMs on display and, witha chuckle, he said to me, “That True RMSlabel reminds me of cars from the 1980s.”I was thoroughly puzzled by this com-ment. Was he suggesting that he washolding a multimeter with an outdated de-sign? So, I took the bait and asked him toexplain. His answer turned out to be anamusing but insightful story:“Remember when fuel injected engines

first went mainstream in the 80s? All thecar companies were bragging about it by Continued on page 8

vided by the square root of two). Like aTrue RMS meter, the averaging meter dis-plays the correct value because, when thecurrent wave is a clean sine wave, the av-eraging formula works accurately.Now, the second you introduce compo-

nents in the circuit that alter the shape ofthat nice sine wave, you get into troublewith an averaging meter.In other words, when a non-linear load

draws current, the sine waveform can getdistorted and change shape into a varietyof different wave forms that fall under thecategory of non-sinusoidal waves. Theseinclude square waves, triangle waves, rec-tangular waves, sawtooth waves, rampwaves, trapezoidal waves, clipped waves,rectified waves, and other irregular forms(see irregular wave image).In these cases, the averaging formula

that worked so well on a linear sine waveis no longer useful. Instead, it will causethe multimeter to display inaccurate read-ings that can be under by as much as 35-40%, or over by as much as 8-10%,

with a higher price tag, many casually dis-miss it as a nice-to-have and not a must-have.

RMS BasicsLet’s take a closer look at True RMS

with simple, easy-to-understand language.The goal of this article is to equip youwith useful information to decide if TrueRMS may be important for the work thatyou do. You will find meters that are notTrue RMS meters and they are very use-ful for many electrical applications, hencethe label on the meter to distinguish thetwo types. Still, if you’re thinking aboutupgrading your meter, it’s essential foryou to decide for yourself if your day-to-day work is impacted by not using a TrueRMS meter.Let’s start with Alternating Current, AC

power, it’s everywhere. If we were tographically illustrate alternating current,we’d use a sine wave to show one cycle ofthe alternating pattern of current travelingback and forth on a conductor (see sinewave image).Generally speaking, a clean electrical

supply comes in that nice linear wave-form. The more basic, non-True RMS me-ter, also called an “averaging” meteralways assumes the waveform is a cleansine wave. It uses a mathematical averag-ing formula to accurately calculate read-ings that are comparable to a higher-endTrue RMS meter.If you want to know the shortcut used

by non-True RMS meter, here’s how itworks: The meter approximates RMSreadings by multiplying the peak voltageor current by 0.707 (the peak value di-

depending on the waveform.So, how does a True RMS meter get it

right? It performs a more sophisticatedcalculation that results in correct readingsregardless of waveform. This formula iswhere root mean square, or RMS, gets itsname from. To get a little more technicalfor a moment, here’s how it works:• All the values over a complete cycle onthe sine wave are squared.• Then, the average (mean) of thesesquare values is calculated• Finally, the square root of this averageresults in the RMS value.

Your DMM calculates all this in realtime, ensuring you have accurate readingsregardless of what is modifying the elec-trical signal’s waveform up the line.

Do You Need True RMS?What is important to remember is this:

manufacturing facilities to home HVACsystems.

True RMS multimeters or clamp metersare unfazed by the irregular waveformsgenerated in these scenarios. If you workin any of today’s many solid-state-inten-sive environments, using a True RMS me-ter is not an option but a requirement.

Let’s take a look at some very specificexamples where nothing but a True RMSmeter will do. Hopefully this checklist ofexamples will answer the question ofwhether you need a True RMS meter. Doyou routinely work on any of these sys-tems or components?• Solid state electronics• Variable frequency drives (VFD)or variable speed drives (VSD)

• Fan controls

lamps; HVAC; mechanical; and indus-trial. Nowadays, more and more of thesehave electronically programmable com-ponents, with microprocessors, or solid-state components controlling their systemsand subsystems. In other words, electron-ics are getting into the act so that systemscan control electrical current more pre-cisely.

Microprocessor-controlled systemssuch as variable-frequency-drive con-trollers that use a rectifier, offer the po-tential to increase energy efficiencytypically by evaluating and adjusting anoptimized electrical supply for the job.Plus, they reduce wear on equipment andenable integration with larger, networked,computer-controlled systems which areincreasingly prevalent in everything from

• MCC /Motor controls• High efficiency HVAC systems• Controller boards• Low-voltage systems• Phase-control dimmers• Power supplies• Industrial motors• Pumps• Elevators• Conveyors• Machine tool drives• High-tech/IT-intensive environments• And any scenario where a linear wave-form will be distorted by intermediarycomponents.

Electrical work on circuits supplyingunmodified mains power only requires anaveraging meter. If you’re likely to be per-forming tests in any of the above environ-ments however, you really do need a TrueRMS meter instead of an averagingmodel. Otherwise, you are asking for trou-ble resulting from inaccurate readings—personal hazards and potentiallyhazardous installations or repairs.

This is not the place to save a buck.Some users have hesitated to upgrade toa True RMS multimeter or clamp-on me-ter because of the price premium. Thegood news is that, in recent years, theprice gap has narrowed considerably mak-ing True RMS meters more affordablethan ever.

Yes, by and large, in apples to applescomparisons of meters, the True RMSmodels will cost more. In the big picturehowever, the additional dollars you spendwill quickly be recouped. How? More ac-curate readings and fewer diagnostic er-rors mean your job is done right the firsttime. Plus, test equipment makers like Ex-tech Instruments offer a wide range ofTrue RMS meters, providing models de-signed for every application and budget.

Remember the electrician at the tradeshow who was amused by the True RMSlabel on a multimeter? To him, going withthat model was such a no-brainer that thefeature didn’t even need mentioning. Un-less you are already thinking like him, besure to do the homework: evaluatewhether you should be using a True RMSmeter for your day-to-day work. �

Yokogawa Meters and Instrumentshas recently developed and released theCA450 Process Multimeter. This unit inte-grates the functionality of a digital multi-meter like the TY500 series with a 4-20mAloop calibrator such as the CA11 into a sin-gle instrument for calibration and mainte-nance of process instrumentation acrossmultiple industries including oil & gas,electric utilities, chemical, water treatmentand food processing.

The CA450 allows technicians and main-tenance personnel to source and measurewith one hand held tool, minimizing theamount of equipment to carry and enablingthe same functional capability. Given thevarious equipment carried by technicians,the CA450 can eliminate one potential toolrequired while accomplishing the task athand in less time. As with the TY500 andTY700 digital multimeters, a 3 year war-ranty is provided and the CA450 maintainsthe same form factor as a TY500 multi-meter. Standard accessories provided withthe unit are 4 AA batteries, test leads, leadcables, an additional fuse and an instruc-tional manual. around $1.40 per Watt.In CIGS development, arguably where

the thin-film action is these days, twocompanies provide good examples ofleading edge development, SoloPowerand Solyndra.SoloPower uses a high-speed, roll-to-roll

process to produce its CIGS material on athin, flexible foil substrate

micron thickness range. Today there arethree primary types of commercially avail-able thin-film cells: amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe) andcopper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS).Amorphous silicon cells were the first thin-film technology and while the technologyis mature and production costs are very low,a-Si cells are the least efficient with con-version rates in the 5-7% range. Cd-Te cellsare more efficient (9-10%), but are avail-able only in rigid glass-on-glass moduleswhich have many of the same structuralcharacteristics as standard PV modules.Plus, UL listed modules are available fromonly two manufacturers. CIGS cells devel-oped at the National Renewable EnergyLab (NREL) were the first to break the 20%efficiency benchmark and commerciallyavailable modules generally run in the 9-11% range. Because production of thin filmmodules uses highly efficient, high speedprocesses and relatively inexpensive equip-ment, sales prices at the end of 2010 are

Some ofthe most rapid advances in and innovativeapplications of PV technology are comingfrom the thin-film and micro-PV parts ofthe industry. These emerging technologiesrepresent some exciting innovations whichcould radically change solar energy pro-duction.Standard PV modules, with their grid-

like appearance and aluminum frames, arebuilt around either single- or multi-crys-talline silicon wafers which are 150-200 mi-crons think. To become solar cells, theserigid wafers go through several processingsteps before they are integrated into a mod-ule. Even though prices have plummeted inthe last year, material and processing costscontinue to make silicon-based modules rel-atively expensive at an average late 2010sales price of around $2 per Watt.Thin film cells, on the other hand, use

cost and presents a quite attractive ROI forproperty owners. In addition, the Solyndrashape presents such a small profile thatwind loads are minimal. A Solyndra arraycan be installed on TPO and other mem-brane roofs without roof penetrations orheavy ballasting.

Unlike thin-film PV which has beenreadily available for some time and has aproven track record of commercial viability,spray-on solar is just now emerging fromfield tests and approaching commercializa-tion, with good potential:. It has long-beenthought that applying solar electric materialto windows and glass surfaces of buildingsand homes could be a true market gamechanger. The snag has been transparency –

suitable for a variety of building-integrated(BIPV) applications. One of the mostpromising products from SoloPower isfilm designed specifically for metal roofpanels. These 85W strips, available invarious lengths are configured specificallyto fit between the seams of metal roofingpanels. One of the most effective installa-tion methods is attachment by adhesivedirectly to the metal roof panel as a finalstep in the roll-form process. This samePV material is also available in a larger200W size designed for flat commercialroofs. Both of these products achieve con-version rates in the 10.5-11% range andare helping lower the cost of solar elec-tricity through advanced productionprocesses, lower materials costs, minimalmaterials waste and potentially faster,lower cost installation when compared torigid module installation.

Solyndra has taken a novel and uniqueapproach in the quest for greater produc-tion and lower cost per Watt. Solyndramodules are essentially thin-film materialrolled into a cylinder between two layersof glass. The tubular shape allows them tomake use of both direct solar radiation, re-gardless of the angle of the sun, and re-flected light from below. Solyndra modulesare specifically designed to work in con-junction with light colored “cool” roofs.When Solyndra modules are mounted on awhite TPO roof, for example, their pro-duction per square foot is greatly enhancedby the reflected light. The combination ofthe energy efficiency provided to the build-ing by a cool roof and solar electricity pro-duction provided by a Solyndra array has asignificant impact on building operating

Innovation is crucial to the future of thesolar energy industry. The work of compa-nies like New Energy Technologies, Solyn-dra and SoloPower is pushing the limits ofbasic PV technology and prompting the de-velopment of more efficient lower cost pro-duction methods. These efforts will havethe impact of more renewable energy atlower cost per Watt. This in turn will leadthe industry toward becoming an ever ex-panding contributor to the energy produc-tion mix worldwide. �
