BCA Latent Curing Agents Performance Characteristics

Dicyandiamide: Dicyandiamide (also referred to as “dicy” for short) is considered to be the workhorse of all 1K epoxy curing agents due to its ease of use, excellent performance properties, long shelf stability and low toxicity. Dicy is supplied in a white crystalline powder form. BSI prod-ucts offers a broad selection of grades from which to choose. The grades vary primarily in terms of particle size, but also in the amount of flow control agent pre-sent. While dicy performance properties are in high de-mand, at times its activation temperature is too high for the formulator’s desired efficiency. Therefore, dicy is often used in conjunction with an accelerator in order to lower its activation temperature while maintaining or enhancing the resulting physical performance of the ad-hesive. Accelerators include modified aliphatic amines, imidazoles and substituted ureas. Modified Aliphatic Amines: In addition to dicy, there are several modified aliphatic amines which can be used to cure epoxy resin in a 1K adhesive formulation. BCA I80 Adduct and BCA I100 Adduct curing agents will cure epoxy resin without the use of dicy. These products offer excellent balances of fast reactivity with good shelf stability and good perfor-mance properties. Imidazoles: Imidazoles can be used as curing agents for one-component adhesive systems. They also are effective accelerators for dicy. Imidazoles are often chosen for their rapid cure characteristics beyond their activation temperatures, as well as for their extremely high Tg de-velopment. Substituted Ureas: Substituted ureas have been used effectively for many years as dicy accelerators. They will not cure epoxy res-ins by themselves, but their synergistic performance with dicy makes them outstanding accelerator choices. These materials provide good latency and are excellent for use in adhesive applications requiring B-staged forms, such as film adhesives. They also work well in the presence of

solvents. Dihydrazides: In one-part epoxy systems, depending on the backbone chain of the chosen dihydrazide, Tg's over 150°C and pot life over 6 months as cure time of less than a minute can be seen. In acrylic emulsions, dihydrazides can be dis-solved into the water phase and serve as an additional crosslinker, as the emulsion coalesces and cures. As a chain extender for poylurethanes, dihydrazides can be used to increase toughness and reduce yellowing. Primary End Use Applications: Within the world of adhesives, the term “one-component” (or 1K) indicates that the curing agent and resin are packaged together as a single unit by the for-mulator, and will remain stable (i.e. will not react) until the appropriate environmental conditions are applied. Major market applications for one-component adhesives include automotive, aerospace, microelectronics and electrical insulation compounds.

BCA D0 is a difunctional reactive diluent based on the epoxidation of 1,4-Butanediol . Resin blends with BCA D0 provide good retention of chemical and water resistance with a minimum of reduction in physical properties.

BCA D1 is Butyl Glycidyl Ether (BGE). It is a mono-functional aliphatic epoxy diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy

resin systems. BCA D1 will give a maximum viscosity reduction with a minimum of loss of properties. Its use will allow a coating to be made with increased PVC and thus pigment and filler loading. BGE is considered to be skin sensitizer and care should be used in the handling of this material.

BCA D2 is chemically ortho-Cresyl Glycidyl Ether (CGE). BCA D2 is a mono-functional aromatic epoxy functional diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. The smallest amount necessary of BCA D2 should be used to achieve the required viscosity since mono-functional epoxies are polymeric chain terminators. The use of BCA D2 in epoxy blends tends to reduce the chance of resin crystallization as compared to aliphatic diluents.

BCA D4 is tri-functional aliphatic glycidyl ether based on the epoxidation of polyglycol triol. BCA D4 is typically used to impart flexibility, toughness and impact resistance in liquid epoxy resin systems. The polyether backbone improves low temperature properties. The chemical nature can impart two-phase formation which results in improved fracture toughness with an opaque appearance.

BCA D5 is a multifunctional reactive diluent and modifier and is chemically the polyglycidyl ether of Castor Oil. It is typically used as a modifier for liquid epoxy resin and imparts flexibility and impact resistance. A typical formulation would include 60 parts standard liquid resin and 40 parts of this modifier. This would produce a system that would have excellent flexibility for crack-bridging etc.

BCA D6 is chemically 2-ethyl Hexyl Glycidyl Ether. BCA D6 is a mono-functional aliphatic epoxy functional diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. The smallest amount necessary of BCA D6 should be used to achieve the required viscosity since mono-functional epoxies are polymeric chain terminators. BCA D6 has low toxicity and skin sensi-tivity. Slight increases in pot life can be expected as compared to other aliphatic diluents.

BCA D7 is chemically C8-C10 alcohol Glycidyl Ether. BCA D7 is a mono-functional aliphatic epoxy functional diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. The smallest amount necessary of BCA D7 should be used to achieve the required viscosity since mono-functional epoxies are polymeric chain terminators. BCA D7 has low toxicity and skin sensi-tivity.

BCA D8 is chemically C12-C14 alcohol Glycidyl Ether. It is the industry standard reactive diluent for epoxy resins. BCA D8

is a mono-functional aliphatic epoxy functional diluent used to reduce the viscosity of, BUT react into epoxy resin systems. It thus does not contribute to VOC. The smallest amount necessary of BCA D8 should be used to achieve the required viscosity since mono-functional epoxies are polymeric chain terminators. BCA D8 has low toxicity and skin sensitivity and FDA sanction for use in food contact.

BCA D9 is chemically Neo-Pentyl Glycol Di-Glycidyl Ether. BCA D9 is di-functional aliphatic epoxy functional diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Resin blends with this epoxy diluent generally provide good retention of chemical and water resistance and a minimum of reduction of physical properties.

BCA Dicy 1 is finest grade of Dicyandiamide available. Because of its extremely fine particle size, BCA Dicy 1 will react more fully into epoxy systems, allowing a faster cure without sacrificing pot life. To inhibit clumping and improve flow, > 1% fumed silica is used. Typically used with epoxy resins (EEW 190) between 6 - 8 phr, the reactivity of dicyandiamide increases inversely proportional to the particle size. Accelerators that have minimal effect on latency while decreasing the activation temper-ature to less than 100OC can be used to improve processing properties. These accelerators will decrease the activation temperature of dicyandiamide, without compro-mising, and perhaps enhancing performance properties.

BCA Dicy 5 is one of the finer pulverized grades containing > 1% fumed silica as a flow control agent to inhibit clumping and improve flow. Typically used with epoxy resins (EEW 190) between 6 - 8 phr, the reactivity of dicyandiamide increases inversely proportional to the particle size, making D-5 faster and more exothermic than D-10 or D-44. Additionally, dicyandiamide tends to react with epoxies at higher temperatures, > 180OC, unless an accelerator is used. Accelerators that have minimal effect on latency while decreasing the activation temperature to less than 100OC can be used. These accelerators will decrease the activation temperature of D-5, without compromising, and perhaps enhancing performance properties.

BCA Dicy 10 is one of the more common pulverized grades containing 1% fumed silica as a flow control agent to inhibit clumping and improve flow. BCA Dicy 10 can also be ordered without a flow control agent or with different levels of a flow control agent. Typically used with epoxy resins (EEW 190) between 6 - 8 phr, the reactivity of dicyandiamide increases inversely proportional to the particle size. Additionally, dicyandiamide tends to react with epoxies at higher temperatures, >180OC, unless an accelerator is used. Accelerators that have minimal effect on latency while decreasing the activation temperature to less than 100OC can be used. These accelera-tors will decrease the activation temperature of dicyandiamide, without compromising, and perhaps enhancing performance properties.

BCA Dicy 44 is a pulverized grade containing more than 1% fumed silica as a flow control agent to inhibit clumping and improve flow. Typically used with epoxy resins (EEW 190) between 6 - 8 phr, the reactivity of dicyandiamide increases inversely proportional to the particle size so Dicy 44 would exhibit a lower exotherm than the finer dicyandiamide grades. Additionally, dicyandiamide tends to react with epoxies at higher temperatures, >180OC, unless an accelerator is used. Accelerators that have minimal effect on latency while decreasing the activation temperature to less than 100OC can be used. These accelerators will decrease the activation tempera-ture of Dicy 44, without compromising, and perhaps enhancing performance properties.

BCA I80 Adduct is an imidazole containing, epoxy amine adduct designed for one part epoxy systems where a long pot life and a fast cure are required. BCA I80 Adduct can be used as a curing agent or as an accelerator for dicyandiamide, anhydrides, DDS or other imidazoles, decreasing the cure temperature, while maintaining a long pot life. BCA I80 Adduct can be used with epoxies for surface mount adhesives and glob tops, induction cured hemming adhesives, as an accelerator for solder masks, as a curative for room temperature stable, low temperature cure, prepregs and composites as well as an accelerator for powder coatings.

BCA I100 Adduct, in an epoxy amine adduct ground to about an 8 micron particle size for easy dispersion and to avoid settling. When added to either liquid or solid epoxy resins such as Bisphenol A or epoxy Novolacs, BCA I100 Adduct displays a pot life of over six months at room temperature and can be cured as low as 100OC. When used as an accelerator for low viscosity systems, such as epoxy / acid anhydrides, BCA I100 Adduct cures at roughly the same speed as other tertiary amines, but exhibits pot lives of over 8 weeks at room temperature. When used as a curing agent, lap shears of over 4000 psi can be attained. BCA I100 Adduct can be com-bined with BCA I80 Adduct to attain a synergistic effect, improving pot life and reducing the temperature of cure.

BCA ADH is commonly used with epoxy resins in single component systems where cure above 120OC, good adhesion to oily metal and good toughness are required. When a faster cure is needed, BCA ADH can also be accelerated resulting in a "snap cure" system. Some suggested accelerators for BCA ADH include BCA I Adduct, and any of the substituted ureas, including BCA MDU or BCA TDU. These accelerators will decrease the activation temperature of BCA ADH, without compromising, and perhaps enhancing performance properties. BCA ADH can also be used as a curative for acrylics and urethanes, by Michael Addition, especially with its water solubility, > 50%, BCA ADH can be used as a water-phase crosslinker in water dispersed urethanes and acrylics, not to mention as part of the polymer backbone.

BCA IDH, Isophthalic Dihydrazide, a benzyl backboned dihydrazide, is commonly used with epoxy resins in single component systems where cure above 160OC, and high Tg's as well as acid resistance are required. When a faster cure is needed, BCA IDH can also be accelerated resulting in a "snap cure" system. Some suggested accelerators for BCA IDH include BCA I80 Adduct, and any of the substituted ureas, including BCA MDU, BCA PDU or BCA TDU. BCA IDH can also be used as a curative for acrylics and urethanes, by Michael Addition, dramatically increasing crosslink density. BCA IDH is also approved by the FDA for indirect food contact under 21 CFR Chapter 175.300.

At levels of 5phr full cure can be accomplished in less than and hour at 100OC and less than 5 minutes at 150OC when used with approximately 8 phr of DICY and bisphenol A epoxy resin, EEW 190. Room temperature shelf life of resins compounded with BCA MDU for stable for well over 6 months.

BCA PDU is a substituted urea for use as an accelerator for dicyandiamide (DICY) to produce shelf-stable one-part systems, combining excellent latency at ambient temperature and rapid cure. BCA PDU is an excellent accelerator for adhesives, powder coatings, prepregs and reinforcements. At levels of 4 phr full cure can be accomplished in 50 minutes at 130OC and less than 5 minutes at 175OC when used with approximately 8 phr of DICY and bisphenol A epoxy resin, EEW 190. Room temperature shelf life of resins compounded with BCA PDU for stable for well over 4 months.

BCA TDU is an aromatic substituted urea based accelerator [1,1'-(4 methyl-m-phenylene) bis(3,3 dimethyl urea)] for use as an accelerator for dicyandiamide (DICY) to produce shelf-stable one-part systems. BCA TDU is an excellent accelerator for adhesives, powder coatings, prepregs, films and reinforcements.

At levels of 3phr, gel times of less than 8 minutes at 120OC and less than 5 minutes at 150OC when used with approximately 8 phr of DICY and bisphenol A epoxy resin, EEW 190. DSC onset is 122OC Tg’s approaching 120 are easily obtained.

BCA T is a commercial grade of tris-(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol. BCA T is typically used to accelerate the cure of amine or mercaptan based epoxy curing agent systems. The concentration BCA T should be optimized for a given application, typical use levels range from 1-7 PHR for epoxy based systems. Excessive concentra-tions should be avoided as it will promote discoloration and embrittlement. For mercaptan-based systems, a PHR of 12 is more typical.

BCA T3 is dimethylaminomethyl phenol. It is the reduced activity version of BCA T (which is TRIS (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol). BCA T3 is typically used to acceler-ate the cure of amine or mercaptan based epoxy curing agent systems. The concentration of BCA T3 should be optimized for a given application and typical use levels range from 5-15 phr. Excessive concentrations should be avoided as may promote discoloration and embrittlement.

BCA 2MI 2-methylimidazole is commonly used as an epoxy catalyst, accelerator in dicyandiamide based epoxy systems. 2-MI derived adducts used as latent curatives in prepregs and coating applications (e.g. corrosion protection / inhibitor, electrical encapsulations).

BCA EMI 24 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole is used as an epoxy catalyst in adhesives, coatings, composites, or as an accelerator for anhydride curing agents. BCA EMI 24 also delays the cross-linking of polyester reactions. BCA EMI 24 is also available as a low viscosity version, EMI-24LV.

BCA EMI 24LV 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole is used as an epoxy catalyst in adhesives, coatings, composites, or as an accelerator for anhydride curing agents. BCA EMI 24LV also delays the cross-linking of polyester reactions.

BCA EMI 24 CN is used as an epoxy catalyst for impact and heat resistant adhesives, accelerator for anhydrides (e.g. electrical encapsulation). Catalyst providing extended latency (2 - 3 days) and compatibility with liquid resin systems. Fiber reinforced composite systems. Neutralizer for acid stabilizers in diazo copying compounds. Printing systems for acrylic fabrics with cationic dyes.
