EPORTFOLIOS FOR CREATIVE ARTS, MUSIC AND ARTS STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES

This project extends the use of ePortfolios to undergraduate students in units of study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Western Sydney, Queensland Conservatorium (Griffith University), and Curtin University, by creating ePortfolio ‘templates’ that provide students with a capstone product of their learning

3

WHY?

› Creating an ePortfolio to document students’ academic and artistic learning outcomes for enhanced employability in the arts sector is a key objective

› To introduce ePortfolios as a quality enhancement of the tertiary learning process

› CONNECTING & SHARING!

4

HOW?

› Documenting learning will be achieved through tailoring the design of templates for each specialization,

› Training staff and students in these processes and embedding assessable components within the curriculum will also be undertaken

› Cross institutional evaluations of the development of ePortfolio templates will assist in the integration of ePortfolios for Arts students at Australian universities

5

BACKGROUND

› Who? The partnership

› What? Different platforms and technologies

› When? 2011 November grant 2012 – data collection & student training2013 – analysis of data & Implementation (trial & evaluation of templates)

6

ARTS STUDENTS

› Who are they?

› How could achievement be “proven”?

› What was the relationship between learning and skills required for career?

› Aim is to present ePortfolios as a learning “process”

7

THE e-FOLIO AS A LEARNING “STORY”

› Evidence or artefacts required to document achievement of learning

› Resulted from understanding the skills and competencies developed during the university degree program

› Valuing the intellectual growth – the more we did it the more we understood

8

PLATFORMS?

› A Personal Learning Environment to encourage and scaffold the process of reflective learning

› Centrally supported and ‘safe’

› Is there an ‘Opportunity’ for integration into other virtual learning spaces?

9

REPORTS FROM THE INSTITUTIONS

› Dawn Bennett – Curtin University

› Diana Blom – University of Western Sydney

› Peter Dunbar-Hall & John Taylor – University of Sydney

› Matt Hitchcock – Griffith University

10

WHERE TO FROM HERE?

› Continue collecting data for the design of the templates

› Disseminate findings through reporting the rich learning findings

› Demonstrating development holistically as an Arts student

› Increased student engagement and student experience
