This Way of Life

Fundraiser for ‘Hand over a Hundy” Fri,17th Sept 7pm

September is certainly shaping up to be a month of extremes. New born lambs and calves frolic over luscious green grass, courtesy of persistent heavy rains. The highland is dusted with late winter snow, followed by a day so hot we are rummaging through drawers looking for sunscreen.

Then the big one hit. An earthquake so violent that it woke most of us up abruptly in the early hours of Saturday morning causing massive devastation to Christchurch, and severe damage locally.

A disaster like that, whilst scary and devastating, does have a silver lining in that it reminds us all how precious life is and to make the most of every day, and to tell those that we love how much they mean to us. We remember that shocking day with images and stories of those severely affected in Christchurch on page 3.

As we embrace the notion of letting those we care about know how much they mean to us, we are introducing a new monthly feature – ‘Sweet Sentiments’. This is your opportunity to say “I Love You”, “Happy Birthday”, “Congratulations”, “I miss you” or even “Will You Marry Me?” Check out page 16 to fi nd out how you can leave your own sweet sentiment.

Making the most of life all starts with “I Do”. At Envy we have consulted with top local wedding experts, to compile a stunning wedding feature, packed with valuable information for blushing brides to be. If you are getting married soon, then pages 10 to 14 are just for you! We continue our advice on planning the perfect

Christmas party on pages 8 and 9, all you need to remember is the mistletoe to encourage a night to remember forever.

Our garden expert from GardeNZ, Rachel Vogan, brings us handy tips on spring vegetable planting – be sure to read page 15 for your chance to win a Tui Spring Vegetable Grow Kit, valued at $70.00!

What’s hot this month? Our fashion experts Natalie Cosgrove and Tessa Benham are back to give us insight into hot summer footwear on Page 6, and which wedding dress is best for you, on page 12.

Barkers tempt our tastebuds with another delicious recipe on page 18, and if you are lucky, you may just win some of their delicious jams!

Will you fi nd love this month, be in for a pay increase, or is your path turning rocky...Madame Latanya is back with her insight into your life for the month of September with her scarily accurate horoscopes!

If Madame Latanya is predicting love in your future, check out our guide to fl irting on Page 16. If the stars are bringing you entertainment at work, then Page 17 is for you, with our new ‘workplace antics’ column.

Our local life coach Carmen Flett returns with positive reinforcement to living your life for yourself right now on Page 7.

We hope you love this months read.

Everyone has a different story to tell of what happened on the morning that the world was literally rocked from out beneath them.

Denise Fawer is a graphic designer working in Ashburton, who lives in Christchurch. As a native from France, a earthquake was relatively inconceivable for her. Friday the 3rd of September was a quiet night in Queensbury Street where Denise lives, and she retired early to get a good nights sleep. She awoke a few minutes before the quake because of a strange dream, so she was only half asleep when the earthquake started. She has never experienced an earthquake before, so at first she didn’t understand what was happening. All she knew was that she was frightened. She woke her partner up by yelling “What’s happening”?! “The bed was shaking so bad, I could see the wall rippling, it was moving like it was only made

of paper. I was absolutely terrified and so petrified I couldn’t move. It was like living in a nightmare”, Denise said.

They got up and checked on her partners sister and her partner to make sure they were ok. Everyone was scared and confused about what had just happened. They looked for torches but couldn’t find any, so lit candles. Still in shock, they decided to head outside to calm their nerves with a cigarette, but were greeted with water pouring into their backyard. It was too dark to check for the damage at that stage, so they returned to bed, but none of them could sleep. At 7am awoke with the intention of going to South Brighton to check on friends, but couldn’t believe what greeted them from their doorstep. The water had receded and the garden looked like a volcano of silt. They ventured out onto Queensbury Street. “We

could have shot an apocalyptic movie in the street that morning. Cracks all over the road, some really large and deep. Water tanks had lifted from the ground, silt and sand everywhere, and a heap more water”. They managed to make it to South Brighton to check on their friends and were relieved to find that they were ok. Back home, her partners brother in law, Dan, worked for a building firm, so he managed to bring to the street a truck and digger and shovels. The sight of this equipment lifted the spirits of the entire street. Dan went to work cleaning the street and the neighbours driveways. It was tiring work that seemed never ending, but the street looked much better from his efforts. “His act of generosity was so much appreciated from everybody”, Denise said.

Queensbury Street went without water and power for almost four days. “It was

hard to keep it together and have faith during this time, but I think everyone coped really well considering the circumstances”, Denise said.

“It was a terrifying nightmare. If you asked me how I felt about the earthquake, I would say it’s not an experience I would wish upon anybody. Through the non-stop aftershocks and the horrible experiences this disaster has brought upon us, I am still proud to be living in Christchurch and I intend on being here for a long time. It may be confusing that I would feel like that after the trauma, but I have never seen this type of generosity from people before. Everyone was concerned for everybody’s safety, and so many people made a big effort to help others in need. I really admire that spirit and courage, and I admire people that are so united throughout such a difficult time. That’s why I still love Christchurch”.

Story: Amanda Niblett If you can’t stop yourself from worrying, especially about things outside your control, you need to learn how to manage your thoughts. Try to replace irrational fears with more productive thoughts, and use relaxation techniques to help get you through.

Deep breathing. Close your eyes—and try taking deep, slow breaths—making each breath even deeper than the last.

Progressive muscle relaxation. Starting at your toes, tense all the muscles as tightly as you can, then completely relax. Work your way up from your feet to the top of your head.

Visualising a peaceful, restful place. Close your eyes and imagine a place or activity that is calming and peaceful for you. Concentrate on how relaxed this place or activity makes you feel.

Sleeping in late on Saturday and Sunday mornings can induce a phenomenon similar to jet lag on Monday mornings. Little wonder some people fi nd it hard to get out of bed and start their working week. If you’re getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. Your body clock craves consistency. Try to get up at around the same time every morning and go to bed early rather than sleep in when you are sleep deprived. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change in small daily increments, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day.

Alcohol is the most commonly self-prescribed drug to induce sleep. A single alcoholic drink can induce a pleasant drowsiness and reduce the amount of time it takes to get to sleep. But two or more drinks will reduce the quality of your sleep, suppressing (deep) sleep so you don’t wake up refreshed. Studies have shown that people who drink alcohol just before bed actually have poorer sleep and are far more restless.

The caffeine in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and even chocolate is a stimulant to your central nervous system and can heighten alertness for six hours or more. So if you consume a cup of coffee at 4:00pm, that caffeine is still in your system at 10:00pm. It will lengthen the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, and can interfere with your sleep quality. Try to minimise your caffeine intake after lunch. Drinking lots of water, juice, tea, or other fl uids may result in frequent bathroom trips throughout the night. Caffeinated drinks,

which act as diuretics, only make things worse. Smoking causes sleep troubles in numerous ways. Nicotine is a stimulant, which disrupts sleep. Additionally, smokers actually experience nicotine withdrawal as the night progresses, making it hard to sleep.

While exercise in the morning and even afternoon is known to help you fall asleep, late night exercise can have the opposite effect. Exercise increases your heart rate and metabolism and also triggers the release of adrenaline, which will boost your energy levels for several hours. Exercise regularly, but not within two hours of bedtime.

Duvet, which are three to fi ve times warmer than a blanket, can cause your body to overheat while you sleep, but you can’t peel off layers. Your body actually needs to lose heat in order to sleep well, but if your bed is too hot, the body may not be able to suffi ciently cool itself and sleep quality can be affected.

If your bedroom is noisy, bright or poorly ventilated, it could be interfering with your sleep quality. These distractions may not wake you up, but they can interrupt the transition into deeper phases of sleep. People differ in their sensitivity to noise, but as a general rule, you’ll sleep better when your bedroom is quiet. Try to keep your bedroom free of television and clutter, eliminate any distracting noises and block out as much light as possible. Ensure your bed is big enough. You should have enough room to stretch and turn comfortably, including with a bed mate present. Your mattress and bedding are also important. If you often wake up with a sore back or an aching neck, you may need to invest in a new mattress or a try a different pillow.

If you associate your bed with events like work, television or errands, it will be harder to wind down at night. Use your bed only for sleep and sex. That way, when you go to bed, your body gets a powerful cue: it’s time to nod off.

Digestion takes up a lot of energy and it can elevate your metabolic rate, interfering with

sleep quality. It is best to avoid a large meal within two hours of your bedtime. If you fi nd yourself getting sleepy after your evening meal way before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating to avoid falling asleep, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep. Fatty foods take a lot of work for your stomach to digest and may keep you up. Also be cautious when it comes to spicy or acidic foods in the evening, as they can cause stomach trouble and heartburn.

If you need to make up for a few lost hours, opt for a daytime nap rather than sleeping late. This strategy allows you to pay off your sleep debt without disturbing your natural sleep–wake rhythm, which often backfi res in insomnia and throws you off for days.

If you’ve tried the tips above, but are still struggling with sleep problems, you may have a sleep disorder that requires professional treatment. Consider scheduling a visit with a sleep doctor if, despite your best efforts at self–help, you are still troubled by insomnia.

The sleep saboteursAre your nerves shot after all of the earthquakes? Tired of losing sleep? These triggers may be making your

sleep deprivation worse. Get onto them and wake up light and bright. There are a lot of different ways we can lose sleep. When you consider

the huge effect that sleep deprivation can have on your short, and long-

term health, it makes sense to avoid the sleep thieves from robbing you

of shut eye. Hard as it may be, try not to stress over an inability to

fall asleep again, because that very stress and anxiety encourages your

body to stay awake. Remind yourself that although it’s not a replacement

for sleep, rest and relaxation still can help rejuvenate your body.

Concentrate on relaxation, not sleep.Residual stress, worry, and anger

from your day can make it very diffi cult to sleep well. Especially if

you are on edge about earthquakes. When you wake up or can’t get to

sleep, take note of what seems to be the recurring theme. That will help you fi gure out what you need to do to get your stress and anger under

control during the day:

With the warmer weather on its way, we’ve explored the hottest footwear trends for summer 2010. We’ll definitely be putting our most stylish foot forward in these styles this summer!

ClogsClogs are the hottest trend this

season as they add an edgy look to the flirty, frilly clothing that can be seen in fashion stores right now. This look was huge on the Chanel runway with lots of neutral tones leading the way. Love them or hate them – there’s no denying the clog trend promises to continue to be huge.

MilitaryThe military influence is another trend

that was huge on the runway for Spring/Summer 2010. The overriding look is for clean-edged casual wear with a strong utilitarian feel, making this one of the most commercial looks for the season. To compliment the army green staple of clothing – wear chunky, strappy wedges for all day comfort, or lace up heels in tan/neutral colours.

Festival FootwearWe’re definitely seeing the rise of

something known as ‘festival fashion’ – the funky, boho-inspired, slightly grungy

style perfectly suited to the summer festival. Think Kate Moss at Glastonbury for inspiration, or our girl-crush Florence Welch.

High PerformanceHigh Performance has been influenced

from the easy layering of 90’s grunge. It’s all about mis-matched proportional layering worn with an ‘anything goes’ attitude. Team this casual, slouchy mood with a pair of heels to off-set the look.

Femme FataleThere’s nothing better than a glam

heel, and this season we will see glamour

coming back in a big way, with lots of feminine, sexy heels. Go ladylike glam at the office and wear it with some equally pretty heels - we particularly love the bows on the back of these ‘Clara’ heels by Pepe Castell available at Scarpa – very ‘Madmen’!

Cut Outs Laser cuts are another big feature

for spring/summer footwear – a very modern, funky look, and great for early spring weather, as they also look great with tights while we wait for the warmer weather to hit.

Hi Everyone, I am enjoying bringing you new

perspectives and ways of looking at things, remembering there can be several different ways to look at the same topic, we all get to choose the one that serves us the best in life.

“How Exciting”“TODAY”

Life’s circumstances are not always what you might wish them to be.

We all can form patterns in our lives, some don’t feel good to us, and we can be lead in what feels like different directions, some we never imagined.

We put so much effort into directing ourselves and choosing a path, or trying to carry out a dream.

What would it feel like to actually have no direction?

What if instead of wondering, or questioning the direction our lives have

taken, we choose to believe there is a path already there for us now?

Not clinging to the WHYS or WHAT IFS, you can rid yourself of confusion.

What ever WAS is gone, WHAT EVER IS, is important and our past is only a reflection with the future yet to be experienced. “TODAY” is here. The NOW.

Walking your life, one step at a time, with courage, faith and determination, keeping your head up, you will feel solid in each moment of your day. I really wanted to touch this month on Acceptance.

Accepting brings serenity and can help us to let go of the past, with what we perceived as mistakes, sadness, and things we may have thought “wrong”. These “mistakes” are actually parts of our growth and learning, and always appreciating the opportunity to have another chance. If that is not possible, knowing that we experience all things to help us grow within ourselves, becoming knowledgeable and calmer in our acceptance of all situations. Being

grateful, not making it a negative. We don’t need to.

Acceptance does not mean that we will feel great about things all of the time, it means we can overcome situations in a more calmer and healthy way. WHAT IS, IS how we choose to see it, it is our choice.

Acceptance today, is the easiest way. Fighting situations brings many things for us all, we don’t need to, its not necessary. In acceptance, there is peace and room that grows within ourselves. It becomes larger and allows greater and new, more positive ideas and ways to come forward. We then get to incorporate them into our daily lives. Its new and exciting and will bring positivity to help us move forward, not staying stuck in the same old, or past stuff. Why on earth choose to do that?!

‘Hint’

Spend 15 minutes each day remembering what feels like our negative unhealthy stuff,

past stuff, our dark stuff, anything that feels less than great. Then choose to let it go, accept it for what it WAS, and decide how it actually was, showing us what we needed to learn in life, how we grew from it, how we felt at that time, was OK. It was part of what we needed to learn in life. Reassure yourself of this, as often as you can, and accept it. Move forward taking with you what can be life’s greatest gifts, if we choose them to be. Even the little things, during our day, starting with these can be fun, and you may be surprised how easy our choice really is.

Be content with how your life has played out. Be content with your life, as it is. Be content with yourself, just the way you are.

Let it settle into you, feel a little freedom within you. Be amazing in this moment.

GO ON Be A Great Day.

Christmas functions

The search for the perfect Christmas function venue is having to start earlier and earlier, as Christmas venues are getting more and more diffi cult to fi nd as they are booked out months, even years in advance.

The annual offi ce Christmas party is essential for good team building, staff motivation, rewarding employees and to say thank you for the hard work over previous months, but making sure everything goes to plan can be a bit of a headache even for the best of function planners.

A successful party lives on in everyone’s memory long after the last glass of punch has been sipped and the last bite of dessert eaten, so what do you need to do to make sure your party goes off with a bang?

In Mid-Canterbury, we are lucky that we have such a wide variation of venues perfect for the occasion, covering a wide geographical area.

Start looking as early as possible, and make sure that you get the perfect Christmas venue to make your party go with a bang. Leaving you to relax and enjoy the event

itself with a glass of chilled wine and nice slice of kiwi pav.

To plan the perfect function, here is an ultimate check list in planning the perfect party, along with a comprehensive ‘Do’s and Don’ts list.

Who: How many people do you expect to

attend? With partners or without? Average age? Will the attendees be primarily female or

male? Interests and a theme relevant to your

business?

When: When are you looking for the event to take

place – midweek or weekend? Is December a sensible time for your

business or would January be a more viable option (it’s not that uncommon for companies to do this for a number of reasons including staff availability and

better value for money). Is a lunch a more feasible option? What have you done in the past? What worked and what perhaps lacked

that bit of sparkle that everyone had been anticipating?

What style of party fi ts in with your companies values and goals?

Does the boss want an exclusive venue solely for your group where they can make a speech, or are you looking to let your hair down with all the trimmings and formalities taken care of in a larger venue?

Or perhaps you would like the best of both worlds – arrival drinks and dinner (or lunch) with your group then entertainment shared with others?

Maximising your budget: What is your budget? Perhaps you could consider a summer

party and a Christmas party? Getting the event right:

What kind of event did you have in mind?

Is the plan to have a few drinks, something to eat and then a bit of dancing, or are you and your colleagues looking for something unique and different?

How adventurous can you be? Could you take your guests out of the

town? Have you considered fun entertainment

– a helicopter ride, boat ride or adventure activity?

How about getting to the event and more importantly how will you all get home afterwards?

How many of your colleagues will require an overnight stay?

Any specifi c dietary or religious requirements that might need to be considered?

So, congratulations! You have successfully created your brief and now you’ll want to start investigating what’s on offer.

ASHBURTON RACECOURSE - FRIDAY, 3 DEC

Some Do’s & Dont’s

1. DO prepare that brief before you consider doing anything else–it will save you time, effort, anguish and money in the long run. 2. DO think about how many people and identify which venues are suitable.3. DO give a great deal of thought to the style of the event that you want to create.4. DO canvas a small number of your work colleagues with your thoughts before booking, however you won’t be able to meet everyone’s wishes so be realistic. 5. DO avoid the last Friday before Christmas as availability is much more restricted and prices can be higher. Perhaps consider a lunch if you are late in organising your function.6. DO check all the details and the small print before booking –if you don’t, it will cost you money. What are the prices of drinks at the cash bar after dinner, wine prices with dinner etc? 7. DO remember that you are booking for a set number of people and if numbers change, you run the risk of not having enough space as colleagues decide to attend late in the day, or losing money for cancelled spaces. Changes to the original booking

can become very time consuming and confusing for you, your colleagues and the venue! 8. DO save the date and get your invites out early – then there are no excuses for not getting everyone there. 9. DO try to visit the venue and meet your organiser before the event. 10. DO ensure that the entertainment is suitable to your audience – some “entertainment” can be subjective, after all we don’t all appreciate the same humour or music!11. DO be clear on how you want everyone greeted on arrival - cash bar account bar; champagne (not as expensive as you may think as people generally drink less); wine; beer; soft drinks; service staff attending; music and lighting levels; canapés etc. First impressions are the memorable ones. 12. DO consider guests travel plans getting to the venue and home again. Be a responsible host.13. DO be adventurous – work hard to create the “WOW” factor! 14. DO consider using a specialist event planning company to put your event together for you. 15. DO check your supplier’s fi nancial integrity. Look for membership of trade associations and beware of offers that seem too good to be true! 16. And most importantly DO make sure you are the member of staff who everyone is congratulating for organising such a fantastic and unforgettable event!

1. DON’T leave it too late to start planning your Christmas event - big events take time to plan properly and the popular venues fi ll up early. 2. DON’T forget to consider others when you’re planning the format of your event. 3. DON’T create the opportunity for guests to consume too much alcohol too quickly – this can be avoided with good planning and communication to the venue. 4. DON’T necessarily repeat what has been successful in the past. Vary the offering and leave some elements of your event as a surprise to create a wow factor.5. DON’T pick a date or time that is likely to clash with other events or could create travel challenges with colleagues from other offi ce. 6. DON’T be too adventurous with the meal choice, and please don’t let the vegetarian alternative be an afterthought.7. DON’T change the brief after you’ve agreed the specifi cation. Stick to what you’ve agreed if you can – it will avoid mistakes being made and disappointment.8. DON’T dabble! If you’re going to let someone arrange your event, let them do it. That is not to say that you shouldn’t query how things are being done or what they will cost. 9. DON’T forget to think of everyone’s needs when you’re planning the evening, from manager to offi ce junior, everyone needs to feel comfortable. 10. And of course DON’T ignore the services of specialist event planners. The right one’s will add value to your event, save you time and effort and may work the budget harder for you.

At Envy, we love a good wedding, and we want to help make it one of the most romantic and memorable days of your life, but sometimes achieving that can be stressful. Your wedding can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be, either way, it will take a lot of thought and planning. Take a deep breath and relax. This is supposed to be a dream come true, a day you’ll both remember for the rest of your lives. And it will be. Formal or informal, big or small, any wedding is a bit of a production. While preparation is key to having your big day go off without a hitch, remember to keep things in perspective. And, if you stick to your budget and avoid handling all of the preparations alone, you can keep your stress level down and enjoy the planning process as much as the wedding.

Your wedding is a celebration of your devotion to your signifi cant other and a chance to share it with all of the most important people in your life. Of course you want it to be perfect, but where do you begin? There are so many decisions to make... Should you have a destination wedding? Who is going to throw you a bridal shower and bachelorette party? Who should you use as your wedding offi ciate? Who should I use as my photographer? What vehicle should I use to get to the ceremony? How will I wear my hair? How do I choose a dress that suits me?

The following pages can assist you in making some of these decisions, and will spark some inspiration toward you planning a wedding of bliss and happiness.

At the end of the day, the most important feature of your wedding is you and your fi ancé. We wish you a lifetime of happiness after your special day together.

When planning the wedding day, the wedding transport is an often overlooked aspect, but one that can make all the difference to a successful wedding.

Making the right choices on how the wedding party will travel to the ceremony and reception locations, as well as transport for guests and family needs careful consideration and early planning. There are plenty of options to consider, from the traditional wedding limousines, to something with a bit more grunt like a hummer, to horse drawn carriages, helicopters or even boats, maybe even a combination of these. A unique transport option can give a wide range of stunning photographic opportunities.

The sooner you book the less likely you are to be disappointed that your preferences are not available. The most popular cars are often booked over 12 months in advance for the peak season wedding dates, if your wedding is not on a Saturday then you will have more chance to book the car of choice, and often companies offer discounts on these days. So plan ahead and make a reservation as soon as you can.

Saying ‘I Do’

under the sunAn outdoor wedding is a dream for

many couples, and there are a variety of locations to consider -- scenic landmarks, historic estates, parks, the beach, or even your own backyard. Getting married outside in the sunshine, surrounded by the beauty of nature and your friends and family, makes for a lovely celebration. When exchanging vows under the sun or the stars, be sure to expect the unexpected. But with some creativity, planning and foresight, the adventurous couple can have the wedding of their dreams. Although you can’t control the weather, you can work around it. Here are some tips for planning a successful outdoor wedding.

Location

Even though your heart is set on an outdoor wedding, it is wise to choose a location that has both indoor and outdoor facilities, if possible. That way, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the show can still go on. Otherwise a marquee is a perfect choice, offering both a beautiful and intimate setting that will protect from the elements. Marquee weddings offer you the freedom and versatility to have exactly what you’d like at your chosen location, without the restrictions that may come with other venues. Any wedding theme goes with a marquee and there are a number of fabulous fi nishing touches available from decorators and hire companies including different styles of candelabra, table centrepieces, chandeliers, chair covers, wall decorations, etc.

Some parks and other outdoor locations may not be experienced in hosting weddings. Make sure you know the rules of the venue you choose.

Make sure you’ll have access to the amenities you’ll need for a successful event. Are there restrooms available? If not, you’ll have to rent portable toilets. Some companies now offer very luxurious portable restroom facilities, so that you and your guests still have extravagant comfort while being amongst the beauty of nature.

Decorations

At an outdoor wedding, Mother Nature provides most of the decorations -- trees, fl owers, a view of a lake or a hilltop vista. But you may want to embellish a bit. Many couples opt for

a beautiful wedding arch to provide a focal point for the ceremony. An arch lavishly covered with fl owers also provides a wonderful backdrop for wedding photos. After the ceremony, the arch can take an honoured place in your garden as a reminder of your special day.

Guests

Be sure guests know they’re attending an outdoor wedding, so they can dress appropriately. In addition, it is a good idea to send weather information to out-of-town guests who may not be familiar with the climate.

Is there a place for your guests to park? If there is no convenient parking at the site, consider having them park in a nearby lot and shuttling them over. Also make sure that the site is accessible, especially for elderly guests and others with limited mobility.

Can You Hear? – will guests have to compete with roaring waves, gusting winds, honking cars, or screaming children to hear your vows? You may need to rent a sound system for the offi ciate and yourselves.

The Wedding Party

Keep the weather in mind when choosing a dress. Brides should choose a dress made of lighter-weight fabrics and consider not having a train, which will drag in the grass and dirt. An aisle runner will help this problem. Brides and bridesmaids will want to stay away from shoes with spike heels, which will sink into the ground. Dare to go casual – outdoor settings allow for breezy fabrics and shorter hemlines. Groomsmen should consider wearing vests with full backs so they can still look dressed up with their coats off.

Food

Be sure the professionals you hire have outdoor experience. Caterers need to provide foods and food displays that keep well under warm conditions. Alcohol is dehydrating. Make sure there are non alcoholic beverages available to quench people’s thirst on a hot day. Wedding cakes can melt outside. Opt for fondant icing over buttercream, which doesn’t keep well in heat or humidity. Stay away from mousse and ice cream cakes.

Talk to one of our experienced crew and discuss you choice of flights or helicopters requirements to make your wedding day a once in a lifetime experience.

1 Many couples underestimate the importance of carefully selecting a good photographer. It is advisable to begin shopping for a wedding photographer as soon as you become engaged, as many photographers are booked out for over a year. Take the time to visit several different photographers in their studios and examine wedding pictures they have taken in the past. Ensure that you are specifi cally shown samples of their wedding photography. Looking at pictures of babies, pets, or sunsets won’t give you any indication of the photographer’s ability to take good wedding pictures!

Before getting into which pictures you want, check the photographer’s credentials. Make sure they have the appropriate experience and ability to shoot your wedding. In addition to viewing samples of their work, be sure to fi nd out how long the photographer has been shooting weddings and how many weddings they have done. Experience is important, not just for the quality of photograph, but also to ensure that your photographer knows how to professionally conduct themselves on the job and to deal with the intensity of a wedding. An experienced wedding photographer will know how to position themselves without becoming a distraction to your guests while taking photos and should also know how to work in harmony with a videographer. They will be able to keep up with the pace of your wedding day, and be able to deal with the fact that they will have an atmosphere of excitement and emotion swirling around them as they work. Most importantly, they will know precisely how to capture that emotion on fi lm so it can be preserved for a lifetime.

2 Discuss all the options available with your fi ancé, and decide on a few the two of you feel are the most qualifi ed, and will give you best fi nished product for your money. Every photographer has his or her own unique style. Look for a style of photography that “speaks” to you. A good wedding photographer should have the ability to really capture mood, emotion, and sentiment within their photographs. They should provoke a reaction within you. Your wedding photos should end up looking like something out of the pages of a magazine, rather than stiff, staged, unnatural shots.

3 Meet with each photographer, and gauge how receptive they are to taking specifi c direction from you. Tell them during this meeting you have a list of shots you wish to have from your wedding, and ask them if that is acceptable. You may also want to have some studio photos taken with your fi ancé anywhere from a week to one day before your wedding. This allows you a controlled, unrushed environment to ensure some good quality photos with both of you looking impeccable. Discuss all of these options, and any requests that may be slightly out of the ordinary to make sure they are capable of meeting all of your requirements.

4 Come to a decision with your fi ancé which photographer would be the easiest to work with, and hammer out all fi nancial details with that photographer. You should strive to book your wedding photographer as soon as your wedding date has been fi rmly set. Part of fi nalising the arrangement includes putting down a deposit and signing a contract. Never rely on a verbal arrangement or agreement, and don’t ask the photographer to simply ‘hold’ the date for the time being. A contract and paid deposit are the only security you have that the photographer is indeed reserved for you, and is legally obligated to follow through with your agreement.

5 Set up a meeting with the photographer to go to the venue and go over the specifi c shots you wish to have. Don’t be shy to let them know specifi cally and exactly what you want. Present them with a “wish list”. For example, you may want to request a close-up shot of the wedding cake, photos of you with certain guests, etc. Make sure that you request multiple shots of any important moments - the cake cutting, the fi rst dance, etc. - just in case a particular shot does not turn out. The photographer should have a wide range of creative ideas for photos from prior experience, and may have some extravagant ideas for some photography options. How gorgeous would it be to get whisked away in a helicopter after the ceremony for photos on the top of a mountain, or beside beautiful waterfalls. Using an extravagant transportation service in conjunction with your wedding photography can open un endless options for unique and stunning photographs. Helicopters can fl y wedding parties to unique locations to provide unforgettable and magical experiences.

6 When it comes to actually shooting your wedding, it is a good idea to have as many photos as possible taken before the ceremony when every one is fresh, before the fl owers start to wilt, and the dresses and tuxes begin to show wrinkles - and, of course, while faces and makeup are still perfect and no one has puffy eyes from crying! If you do not wish to see your fi ancé before the actual ceremony, save any pictures where the two of you will appear together for after the ceremony.

Keep a small bag containing a mirror (perhaps two mirrors so you can check the back of your hair and veil as well), hairspray, powder, a brush and comb, extra hair pins, face powder, blush, and lipstick close by at all times during picture taking. Check your mirror from time to time to ensure that there is no need for touch-ups, but don’t be obsessive! Sure, you want to make sure you’re looking amazing, but more importantly, you want to be “in the moment”, relaxed, and having a great time. Focus more on that than on checking yourself out or powdering the shine from your nose.

Where images speak more eloquently than wordsYou don’t have to be a Bridezilla or a complete madam to get what you want

when it comes to your wedding photography. But you do want to be assertive and exacting with your expectations for pictures. Here are some tips to help you fi nd a wedding photographer who will take the shots you want, to capture the full beauty of your special day.

Story: Amanda Niblett

Be fi rm but polite. Remember that the photographer is a working professional, and if they make a commitment to give you what you want, they will be open to that, but you shouldn’t be rude or condescending.

You will receive what you pay for. Don’t be scared to shell out a little extra for a photographer, as their service is possibly the most important. It is their images and effort that will immortalise your special day in print forever. Long after the band stops playing, the guests have gone home, the fl owers have wilted, all that will remain are memories and photographs.

Some photographers will charge a fl at fee to attend the wedding and shoot pictures. You then purchase the specifi c pictures you want at the sizes you want after it. Other photographers will offer packages. Be clear exactly what your cost includes.

Once you’ve done your homework and invested the proper care and attention into selecting the right photographer to capture your big day, the only thing you’ll have left to do is look up, watch the birdie, fl ash those pearly whites and say “Cheese!”.

So it seems that getting married is back in vogue, everyone’s had their babies and now it seems romance is the go again. It seems my generation has scorned our divorced parents generation and are embracing old fashioned commitment once more. So is it recessionary times making us value the cocooning for free on cash strapped weekends, or is it the age-old lure of getting to buy that one day wear, childhood dream mystical white dress? The truth may have been revealed!

I get married scarily soon, 10 days or so to go and the butterfl ies are breeding, so to are the celebratory glasses of wine, the treat-yourself pieces of cake and the comfort Tim Tams that make the dress waiting for me seem a corset which I must remain able to squeeze into. Hmmm, irony, and fi rst piece of advice – whatever dress you do choose, for goodness sake be comfortable, the last memories you want

are that you couldn’t breathe, sit down, or fi t in that glass of wine!

So being in fashion, an able seamstress, ideas abounding, do I make my own dress or fall for someone else’s concoction? Choose classic for a lifetime of pictures or statement of time contemporary. Personality or tradition, corset fi tting or fl owing Grecian, giant hoop or statement bustle, long, short, lace, satin, white, off-white, ivory, cream ahhhhh!

Actually I confess I am a bit of an anti-bride. I didn’t even want to take about weddings for the fi rst 6 months of our engagement. I love the idea of weddings, the day, the celebration, the kisses, the glances, the heart felt words, but all the choices for just the dress make my head spin, so unlike how I would normally design a range by researching in a pool of ideas, I detached. No wedding magazines for me.

Possibly because being married at our young age (27 and 29....I class this as young…) it is reasonably rare in my circles to be tied, so maybe it seems a new and different thing to be, making it ‘fashionable’ to be Mr and Mrs. So I wanted a blend of traditional and contemporary ideas that marked what our modern marriage means. Fashion designer me and circus performer him meant our day would ever be ‘normal’… I found my dress by accident in a Sydney department store on a work trip, not a wedding dress and no “ohhhh you’ll be such a beautiful bride” shop assistants to be seen anywhere. Perfect. And as I had planned to make my dress for a tiny sum, I waited a painful, agonising two weeks for their annual sale to justify my purchase. Ah we women love a bargain! The dress came in one colour choice and one size choice, and there was only one white dress in the whole store, funny how easy it was, and yet

how much I love that piece of cloth. It is exactly what I wanted, the ivory white

is the tradition, the sleeves and long length are the modesty for such an occasion, yet the plunging neckline and back are my personality, and the design of the dress are the contemporary twist that make my dress a one off statement. The whole point for everyone to take away here is that your dress should refl ect you and your stance on marriage, the memories of the time you want to take with you, and not what the fashion magazines dictate for the season or what your mother, grandmother, sister, bridesmaids, best friend, saleswomen, boss, etc, etc, etc want. It is your day. The most important way to fi nd this dress is by fi nding what suits your individual fi gure and embracing that. Try on different styles and colours to fi nd what works for you, you may fi nd its completely different to what you fi rst imagined.

Your dress should refl ect you and your personality. Don’t always rely on trends, rather embrace what fi ts your body type to give the look you desire for your day.

Do you take this dress forever?

Tall Wedding Cakes

2010 brings with itself the trend of towering wedding cakes. Contrary to last year, where three tiered cakes were in rage, this year has brought the trend of taller cake. While last year the cakes for wedding usually consisted of maximum one to three layers, this year it has increased to fi ve to seven tiers. So if you are planning a wedding this season, the best bet for you would be to go for fi ve or seven layered cake. Although if your budget doesn’t allow you a treat of seven layers, you could go for fake layers too.

It the tall and extravagant isn’t your style, why don’t you try the multi cupcake option, for a cute alternative!

Dramatic Colour

As seen on the runways, the trend of dramatic colours can be seen in the wedding cakes too. The colours, which were considered a little too theatrical for the cakes until, last year, are now considered in vogue. You will get to see a lot of green, blues, and even orange coloured wedding cakes in 2010. However, the customary white and the jewel themed black and white cake will also be in vogue this year.

Edible Painted Cakes

Although the trend of edible painted cakes appeared in early 2009, it is likely to be continued in the year 2010 also. So get your baker decorate the cake with the work of famous artist. It will not only be a treat to the tongue but also to the eyes.

Baubles Tiered Cake

Baubles are not just for decorating Christmas tree but they also make a great shape for wedding cakes too. While the fi rst layer of the cake remains circular, square, or even heart shaped the other four or six layers of fi ve and seven tiered cake respectively are in the shaped of baubles. It can be anything from cream cakes in the shape of baubles in gold, white, pink, or any other colours depending on the theme of the cake and the wedding. It can be laid in a transparent glass cake stand to make it look very attractive. It will not only act as the centre piece of the reception area but will also fetch you many compliments about it.

Fresh Fruit Topped Cakes

The nature is the theme of 2010 so how the cakes could be untouched from the theme. This year you may fi nd loads of wedding cakes fi lled with fresh fruits pieces. Strawberries, black berries, peaches, mangoes and other fruits would be used to embellish the wedding cake.

Ruffl es

Ruffl es were all over the runways this year and the trend of cute ruffl es would be seen in the wedding cakes too. if you are a 2010 bride and are opting for ruffl ed bridal dress, you could go for fi ve or seven tiered cakes adorned with ruffl es, laces, and rosettes.

Hair comesYou should decide on your wedding day hair style early in your planning since you

may need to time to grow your hair and experiment with different colours or styles. Thankfully today however, hair extensions are available if you are tying the knot in a hurry.

Being the bride, you become the focus of this day and your wedding hair style should be wonderful. Your wedding hair will be seen by everybody attending that important event. Because the hair wedding you opt for is very important, it is needed that you spend time selecting the best wedding hair for you. There are many wedding hairstyles for you to choose from for your special day. You have to choose a hairdo that not only compliments your face, but matches your wedding dress as well. When choosing your wedding hair style, you also have to think about the headpiece that you intend to wear on your wedding day. It would better to wear your hair down if you intend to wear a long veil or a crown of fl owers. If it is a tiara that you are going to wear, your hair looks the best when it is pulled back. Your wedding jewellery also plays an important part in determining your wedding hairdo.

It is better to wear elaborate earrings to draw attention to your face if you wear your hair up. However if you are letting your long hair down, then

it is better for you to wear simple earrings and wedding accessories. If you intend to have your hair coloured, you

should have it coloured about a week or two before the wedding so that it looks the best on your wedding day.

Great tips to ensure your hair is perfect on your wedding day:

1. Take several photographs of hairstyles you like to your stylist when planning your look. Tear

pictures of looks you love from bridal and hairstyling magazines or print hair style examples from the web.2. Bring a friend along with a digital camera to

capture the look from all angles so you can print photos and refresh your stylist’s memory on your

wedding day.3. Consider wearing beautiful hair jewellery under your veil so

you continue to sparkle even if you remove your head piece at your reception.

4. Consider not wearing a veil at all! Delicate fl owers tucked into fl owing curls, or even a string of

freshwater pearls or lace ribbon woven through a braid can create a simple yet elegant look.

5. Trial your hairstyle within a week of your wedding day, this will leave time for amendments if

necessary, but the style and technique will remain fresh in the mind of your stylist.

The pure beauty of pearls...

Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. In the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu book dating back to 1000 B.C. Krishna, the preserver, brought forth pearls from the depths of the sea to give to his daughter on her wedding day. Thus started the tradition of giving pearls to the bride.

The ancient Greeks also believed that pearls should be part of the wedding experience. They considered pearls to be the “wedding gem” because they believed that pearls would help ensure marital bliss and prevent newlywed brides from crying.

During the Crusades, gallant knights returning from the Holly Lands would bestow pearls to their “fair ladies” for their wedding days.

Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too.

Pearls are now strongly used in modern wedding jewellery, from traditional pearl strings, to more modern pearl and diamond drops, or 3 string wire necklaces threaded with pearls and crystals.

At Time for Diamonds, we can offer creative versatility of the stunning pearl. We can create necklaces and bracelets to the desired length, and match earrings to complete the look. We can create looks to compliment your dress or the bridesmaids dresses, in modern or traditional styles.

Pearls are available in a large range of gorgeous colours, to compliment your selected colour scheme.

Spring is here and now its time to get busy in the veggie garden. This month we look at what needs to be done to ensure tasty successful crops. Remember if you are not sure what to do or need some advice, visit your local garden centre and ask their experts, I fi nd they are only to happy to help.

1. Weed it and clean it! Remove all weeds and unwanted dead plants from last season’s garden to leave a clean canvas to start with. 2. Dig it! Dig in green manure crops and well-rotted compost to freshen up your veggie plot before you begin planting new seasons crops. This will aerate the soil and increase worm activity prior to planting. 3. Feed it! Spread a generous amount of fertiliser over the top of your veggie beds and fork it in. It’s vital to blend in the fertiliser as it can burn the roots of young vegetables if left lying on top of the soil. Nitrophoska extra is perfect for most veggies.4. Level it! Ideally its best to have a level surface where possible to grow your vegetables. If you have hollows and low patches, water tends to puddle in these areas and can cause problems with pest and disease. Rake your beds level once all the digging has been done.5. Seed it! Sowing seeds is quick and economical. Some veggies such as carrots and parsnips can only be grown from seed. Onions, lettuces, salads greens, beans, corn, parsnips, carrots, beetroot and radishes can all be sown now outside. Cold sensitive seedlings such as basil, tomatoes, cucumbers and melons can be sown in trays indoors until the weather warms. 6. Spud it! Potatoes take about 3 months to grow, ensure you get certifi ed seed potatoes and sprout them prior to planting them out. Plant them 30cm apart and feed the soil with potato fertiliser for a bumper crop. 7. Plant it! Vegetable seedlings can be planted out, choose healthy looking plants in punnets or bundles. Broccoli, leeks, spinach, celery, cabbage and caulifl ower can all be planted now. Don’t be tempted to plant all your veggies at once, succession planting every few weeks will ensure you won’t have a glut of one veggie ready at the same time. 8. Pot it! If space or time is an issue, plenty of crops thrive grown in pots or containers. Potatoes, lettuces, tomatoes and herbs are easy to grow options. Ranges of planters are made just for this purpose and come in fashionable colours. Look out for Potato, berry and tomato planters, veggie bags and the new carrot planters from Haxnicks. 9. Water it! Once planted keep the veggie garden moist. If you have a sandy or dry soil, which drains quickly, add compost and saturaid to enable to soil to hold onto more moisture. Many crops will bolt and die if grown in dry soils. 10. Bug it! Slugs and snails are hungry for fresh leaves to much on. Be vigilant and lay Quash slug and snail bait round all your precious veggies to ensure what you munch don’t crunch with any unwanted livestock. Eggs shells, sheep dags and pine needles act to deter them as well.

1. Watch it! Learn how to plant your own veggie patches by visiting www.tuitime.co.nz for free video guides on growing your own spuds, berries, tomatoes, lawns and vegetables.2. Read it ! The NZ Vegetable Garden is the complete guide to growing vegetables. It shows you tips and tricks to ensure a bountiful harvest and include tasty recipes for each crop. 3. Swap it! Save money by swapping seedlings, plants and even crops with friends and neighbours when you have too many of something. 4. Eat it! Fresh is best, the fl avour, convenience and self-satisfaction from growing your own is rewarding. Get growing in your patch this season – just do it!

Enjoy what you grow this season and remember to make a note of your top and fl op crops for future reference. Yes, we all have fl op crops, some you insist on trying again and others you just have to admit defeat. Happy Gardening!

The art of fl irtingThe art of fl irting is universal

and an integral part of human interaction.

There’s been a certain kind of stigma attached to fl irting. We’re going to put it down as plain

jealousy; a good fl irt is not just a relentless, shameless self promoter

– but somebody who can use their personality as a man magnet tool. Flirting, after all, is just another form of communication. Whether it’s innocent or

meaningful, fl irting is fun. However, it can be tough to decipher whether a guy is just being friendly or fl irting. If you are charming, fl irting can

end in a successful encounter, be it friendship, lust or love. Get the basics down and you can reap the rewards and evade the pitfalls of fl irting. This guide will have you

batting your eyelashes confi dently in no time!

The eyes have it

Direct eye contact is a powerful act and a single look can mean

more than a thousand words. But in terms of fl irting — more is less.

If someone is making eye contact with you (whether or not he then looks away), it means he has some sort of interest in you. Hold that eye contact, or try to pick it up again to see what the guy is thinking.

A Smile paints a thousand words

Watch for a smile. If you get one, you’re now seeing the signals. A smile your way is a dead giveaway of interest. Build on that smile with one of your own--or if you’re really bold, a wink. When smiles are exchanged, it’s a good time to initiate conversation.

Body Talk

Body language speaks volumes in terms of fl irting but can be diffi cult to control and read but there are clear ‘no’ and ‘go’ signals.

See if he’s getting closer to you. If he edges in your direction, he probably wants to get to know you.

If a guy is leaning toward you,

inadvertently touching you or brushing up against you, chances are he’s fl irting. Adopting a similar position to yours is another positive sign.

See if he lingers as you’re leaving. If he does, he probably wants to tag along, or is trying to close the conversation with a phone number.

Chit Chat

A sincere ‘hi’ and a smile will more likely start a conversation than ‘your mother must’ve been a thief, cause she stole all the stars in heaven and put them in your eyes’. Uggh! Cheese does not equal good fl irting.

Once a conversation is up and running, remember to listen — and this doesn’t mean letting the other person take over. Nod, smile and gesture at the right moments and show you are really paying attention by asking questions about what they are talking about when a natural pause occurs. Notice if he is saying “Me too!” a lot. If so, he’s trying to relate to you and is probably fl irting.

1 Keep your eyes peeled and create social occasions to get groups of people together that wouldn’t normally socialise.2 Be brave and make the fi rst move.3 Look him in the eyes, nothing is sexier.4 If he’s not funny, don’t laugh at his jokes – it won’t get any funnier.5 Just holding hands can be magical.6 The phone works both ways, don’t be scared to send

the fi rst text. Waiting 3 days is only a game, make contact when you feel comfortable to.7 If he’s interested, he will be in to you. He will want to know all about you.8 Know when it’s over. If he’s not responding well to you, take the hint. Obsessive and Psycho are not attractive traits to display and will just get you a really bad reputation.

Have you ever found yourself sitting back at work, taking a moment of time out, when the realization hits you that your workplace is fi lled with so much love, drama and laughter that it could star in its very own reality show on MTV.

You wouldn’t be alone with a large percentage of us spending more time at work than at home, naturally the hilarious antics that keep us entertained during the day occur amongst our workmates. We would love you to share some of the hilarious moments with the rest of Mid-Canterbury.

Our intention is not to humiliate anyone so personally that they would be ashamed to venture outside ever again, so we will take the liberty of changing personal details and names, however the company name will be published.

To kick start Mid-Canterburys lighter-side of the workplace column, we shall share an embarrassing misunderstanding that occurred recently at the Ashburton Guardian.

It’s amazing the gossip and rumours that will accumulate from a strange object in a toilet. One morning on the 3rd level of the Somerset Building at the Ashburton Guardian there was a small metal item, bent in a long ‘U’ shape, approx 8cm long sitting in one of the women’s toilet bowls. The fi rst lady that noticed it assumed it was an underwire that had come out of a bra and was

poorly disposed of, but thought no more about it.

Some time later another lady noticed the object but was concerned and consulted a friend in the offi ce.

These 2 came to the conclusion that it was a contraceptive item and wondered if the person who lost it knew that it was missing, so carefully sought the advice of others.

By this time a large group of ladies had formed a huddle to discuss the object further. The contraceptive ‘Mirena’ was frantically googled to see if it matched the mystery item, and gossip evolved to the possibility of an accidental pregnancy. At this time another lady had arrived back at work and enquired about the huddle of whispers. When she was told of the item, she went to investigate and came back absolutely laughing in hysterics! She had immediately solved the mystery.

Earlier that morning when she was styling her hair she had lost one of her more unusual hair pins in her clothing and naturally assumed it would migrate south and fall out onto the fl oor that evening. She didn’t count on it falling into the loo at work however, and was crying in laughter at the speculation this metal hairpin had caused.

Needless to say there were some embarrassed and sheepish looking faces after the mystery was solved.

Leg work

Don’t sit still at your desk. Exercising at work doesn’t mean you drop and give us ten. Simply tighten and squeeze your buttocks, holding tight for 10 seconds. Repeat this at least twelve times. Tone up calves and by bending and rolling your feet onto your toes. Hold tight for 10 seconds and again repeat twelve times

Big breakfast

It’s no surprise that eating breakfast is good for health but a study carried out at the University of Cambridge found subjects who ate a bigger meal before work and less during the day had the lowest BMI. This is no excuse of a full fry-up, of course. Prepare a nutritious bowl of cereal, high in fi bre with some fruit such as blueberries on top, or make a power smoothie with bananas and yoghurt.

Feeling green

Give up your morning coffee for green tea to keep slim. Unlike a cappuccino, which can have over 70 calories, there are no hidden calories in green tea. Green tea is also full of antioxidants that are believed to stimulate the body to burn energy. Alternatively try the celeb craze of quaffi ng white tea — leaves are left very close to their natural state so have even more antioxidants than their green sister.

Step out

It may sound like a waste of your precious work time but every step counts. Making those extra trips up and down the stairs rather then jumping on the elevator, nipping out for a walk at lunchtime or walking while you talk on your mobile will make a difference to your weight. Invest in a pedometer and track your paces — an extra 500 steps per day burns around 50 calories per day.

Eat out

Scoffi ng your sandwich at your desk can be tempting but increasing the length of time you stay seated during the day minimises the amount of calories burnt. If you are a packed-luncher, opt for a park or communal area at work and follow it up with a brisk walk rather than a packet of chips.

Lunch Time Classes

It may sound daunting at fi rst, but try and fi t a quick exercise class into your day. Visit your local gym or pool for details, and even chat to your boss about perhaps starting half an hour earlier to give you a longer mid day break to fi t in some calorie burning exercise. Exercising with other workmates will keep you motivated and you are more likely to continue, so even try and start up a walking group.

It’s all about the Abs

Squeezing your abs and getting a full workout can be as simple as lifting your legs off the ground while you are seated, and holding for 15 seconds before lowering your legs again. Then take some time to suck in your lower abs and hold them (similar to if you are busting to go to the toilet). This will help strengthen your pelvic fl oor muscle, meaning you may experience less bladder weakness.

Swiss Ball!

A Swiss ball is a simple, yet effective way to work out while you work, simply by sitting on it. You receive a great abdominal and thigh workout by sitting on one as you work, making working and exercise go hand in hand without being disruptive in the offi ce. Perhaps practice at home for a few hours before you ditch the chair, as initially they can be hard work on muscles seldom used, and you don’t want to fall off in front of your workmates on the fi rst day

Super FoodsNatures

Walnuts - Walnuts are one of the best plant sources of protein. They are rich in fi bre, B vitamins, magnesium, and antioxidants such as Vitamin E. These little gems help develop more than three dozen neurotransmitters for brain function. Six halves contain 80 calories. Because they are high in protein, substitute bacon and eggs in the morning for some walnuts sprinkled over your cereal.

Blueberries - are truely natures super fruit. They contain the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruit, they neutralise free radicals which can affect disease and aging in the body, like cranberries they can help prevent urinary tract infections, and studies have shown amazing results in mental health and cancer fi ghting properties. Put a handful of blueberries a day in your cereal or add them to a delicious smoothie.

Broccoli - Broccoli is one of the earth’s true super foods; one cup of chopped broccoli has 30 skinny calories. Broccoli is bursting with the cancer fi ghting fi bre, beta-carotene and Vitamin C, plus folic acid (which helps prevent neural tube birth defects), bone building calcium and boron. Researchers have also found in broccoli a hidden cancer-fi ghting chemical, sulforaphane, which stimulates

the activity of detoxifying enzymes in the body.

Chocolate - Just 100 grams of dark chocolate contains more than half of the daily requirements of magnesium and iron. It is also high in potassium, zinc and other minerals, as well as being high in antioxidants to help fi ght free radicals. Dark chocolate also stimulates the release of endorphins throughout the body, making you feel great!

Carrots- Carrots have an extremely high beta-carotene content. Eating at least one carrot a day can reduce the risk of lung cancer and stroke. One cup of chopped carrot contains 52 calories, but because of their fi bre content, it can take more calories to burn the food than what you have put in, meaning they are a great fat fi ghting tool!

Yogurt- Eating a small tub of yoghurt with live cultures on a daily basis, can reduce allergies by up to ten times, and give you a higher resistance to fi ghting colds. Light fat free yogurt averages around 100 calories per serving. It has been shown to lessen the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, as well as improving gastrointestinal conditions in the tummy.

Beat Hunger First: Keep a few of your favourite snacks always close at hand. By eating low calorie snacks on a frequent basis you can keep hunger at bay and prevent episodes of binge eating. Whole apples and other fruits are great portable on-the-go snacks that can be taken with you anywhere, and a small handful of nuts and some carrot sticks will satisfy your

protein and hunger needs to get you through to your next main meal.

Choosing snacks wisely can be diffi cult, especially if you are trying to lose weight or turn over a new leaf and begin a lifestyle of healthy eating. Snacks aimed at dieters can actually be loaded with calories and have little nutritional value. But it is possible to fi nd things that you love to eat that are not only healthy, but are perfect for the calorie conscious waistline. It is important to choose foods of a high nutritional value, there is no point in eating a snack just because it is low in calories, if it actually provides you with no nutrition. Here are some of natures super foods, that eaten in moderation, will have you looking good and feeling great!

Your social life, finances, and partnerships are still in a bit of an uproar. However, progress is being made and the two of you agree to a fresh start or you find a new partner that you like better than the original. Romantic matters are intense, personal, and deep as you begin the month. From the 8th forward, your love life begins to take a turn that continues for the rest of 2010. You are also encouraged to get involved in cultural, religious, political, academic, travel, media, and/or legal activities. You are ready for an adventure and an excuse to break out of your dull routines.

You have a great deal of romantic, financial, leadership, and professional opportunities this month. Romance intensifies and passions run deep, especially around the 12th and 18th. Previous complications and annoyances regarding your boss, reputation, or professional path, are now finally beginning to move forward in a positive direction for you. Career matters become clearer after the 13th, and important work projects move forward. Surprising events and changes occur to your inner world around the 18th.

Mar 21 - Apr 19

Taurus Your career is beginning to see signs of progress. You still

have political, cultural, academic, media, legal, or travel-related issues causing some challenges, but overall things are beginning to get easier. Your social life is reinvigorated too, so do what you can to balance your professional, romantic, and social activities in a way that you can manage and not lose your positive feelings. A partner is likely to be especially spirited and amorous as well, demanding more of your attention, particularly in the last two weeks of the month. For some of you, a budding new partnership is possible, and for others, much focus on enhancing romance in an existing relationship is likely. It’s time to have some fun!

Gemini

Your love life, finances, career, home life, and ability to have fun are all showing signs of positive growth and are battling each other at times for your attention. Family matters that have been troubling clear up by the middle of September. Overall, you should be able to make positive strides in all of these areas of your life. You still have a bit of a lingering tug-of-war between your professional goals and your desire for domestic bliss, but it is not as fierce as it used to be.

June 21 - July 22

Sudden opportunities to expand your horizons, such as through travel, adventure, or learning can arise and jolt you out of your routine. New insights into work and health matters keep you motivated. Personal magnetism runs high, especially around the 18th. A career project can blossom for you around the 23rd. There is some awesome date night energy for you to take advantage of later in the month. Love is intense this month, but in a mostly pleasant manner. There is an “all or nothing” energy to romance in September with Venus and Mars both entering Scorpio.

July 23 - Aug 22

Your career and finances are still a bit rocky, but you have some wonderful opportunities to start improving the situation. Financial matters become more defined and clear by the 14th, as do practical concerns and work matters. Projects that have been delayed now begin to move forward. You also have quite a lot of positive energy occurring in your private life and especially involving your loved one. You are one of the first zodiac signs to feel the economy begin to bounce back. Harness your positive energy to make a situation truely wonderful this month around the 22nd.

Aug 23 - Sept 22

You and a partner (or competitor) are still fighting about your children, pets, love life, luxury spending, hobbies, and/or happiness. The good news is that the battles are getting weaker and finally coming to an end. Your finances are still tight, but you have some wonderful negotiating skills that help tremendously when working on selling, purchasing, bartering, etc. You have a keen eye for finding bargains and you find ways to start smoothing things over. Your words are honest, kind, and motivational as you work towards getting everyone to remember why you all love hanging out together in the first place.

Sept 23 - Oct 22This month will be so much better than last month! Home

and family life improves this month, as do financial matters. You have opportunities to have fun, enjoy some romance, work on your financial goals, heal old emotional wounds, and to start rebuilding a new life with a better attitude. There will still be some aftershocks of last month’s dramas, but it will be much weaker and less disruptive this time. The 22nd brings a yearly cycle of personal power that lasts until October 23rd.

You are still feeling tugged and pulled on from all sides, as everyone wants your time and attention. However, you have some wonderful social, negotiating, networking, community, and commercial energies coming in that will help you to seduce, inspire, entertain, motivate, sell, and convince others to hear what you have to say and to consider doing things your way. You also have an extra dose of sex appeal and personal magnetism adding to your arsenal of tricks. The 23rd brings new light on a romantic or creative endeavor. Emotions run high. Creatively, this is a month in which you are really finding yourself and connecting to your hidden or dormant

Oct 23 - Nov 21

That two-year battle causing all kinds of tension and chaos in your home life finally sputters to an end this month. You are still financially strapped. However, your career gets some wonderful positive energy, which helps to ease your financial situation. After the 14th, clarity comes. You experience increased energy and motivation for setting personal plans into motion. For those looking for work, job offers might arrive. You can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Nov 22 - Dec 21

Dec 22 - Jan 19Your career and social life are getting a nice boost of positive

energy. The legal, cultural, travel, relocation, political, religious, academic, or media related issues you have been dealing with over the last couple of years are finally coming to an end. Friends, group activities, and networking activities play a large role in your love life. In fact, the influence of friends and group connections is powerful throughout the year. You are expanding your horizons and friends are helping you to feel more connected and confident. The Full Moon on the 23rd illuminates a family matter. You are definitely ready for focusing on more enjoyable things like your friends and your professional goals.

You are still dealing with some academic, cultural, political, religious, legal, or travel related issues that could be causing emotional stress. The good news is that you have some wonderful dynamics helping you to move forward with your financial and professional goals. From the 15th, going after what you want, whether it’s a promotion or an idea you are pushing, is especially favored. Jupiter aligns with your ruler, Uranus, again this month, bringing a hopeful attitude, beneficial connections through networking efforts, and improved financial status.
