Unit Statement: In Nonrenewable Energy the student will examine the basics of energy and its main sources, fossil fuels. Fossil fuels and nuclear energy, are considered nonrenewable because they will not last indefinitely. The student will also investigate the negative impacts to both humans and the environment from extracting and burning fossil fuels. Essential Outcomes: (assessed for mastery)

TSW ‘A’ Level Mastery ‘B’ Level Mastery ‘P’

TSW 1: Identify and briefly summarize the six forms of energy and give an example of each.

Student lists and briefly describes the six forms of energy.

TSW 2: Differentiate between potential and kinetic energy.

Student connects the concepts to potential and kinetic energy to the major energy sources: oil, natural gas, coal and nuclear energy and generalizes how they represent both potential and kinetic energy.

Student identifies the key difference in potential and kinetic energy.

TSW 3: Analyze the current supply of fossil fuels and the potential use of alternative fossil fuels.

Student uses real-world data to draw conclusions about the current supply of fossil fuels and evaluates the so-called “alternative fossil-fuels”: oil sands, oil shale, and methane hydrate as to their availability, efficiency and impact on people and the environment from their use.
