CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT

20. Bunds in poor condition (e.g. filled with rainwater, overflowing, stained, damaged or cracked)?

21. Are tanks and drums separated from the inner edge of the bund crest by a distance of half the height of the tanks or stacks of drums on flat ground (see EPA Bunding Guidelines for further details)?

22. Minor Storage For sites where only a few drums are stored, say less than 1200 litres, it is generally satisfactory to provide alternatives to a bund. The drums should be stored such that:

• recovery of spilt material is possible;

• they are undercover and on an impervious base;

• they are away from stormwater drains and pits;

• good operational procedures are used; and

• absorbent material is on hand.

23. Chemical containers or drums unsafely stacked, stored outside, or stored in close proximity to stormwater drains?

24. Containers without lids or unsealed bags?

25. Unlabelled or wrongly labelled chemical containers?

26. Out of date or missing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s)? 27. (MSDS’s must be easily accessible on site, and must be current i.e.

no more than five years old)?

29. Inappropriate, inaccessible, or no spill kit or material on site or available for use?

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

30. Stormwater grates or drains not identified?

31. Overflowing or blocked oil interceptors, grease traps, grates, drains or treatment systems?

32. Evidence of leaks, surface staining or corrosion within reach of the stormwater system?

33. Containers being washed out within reach of stormwater drains?

34. Outdoor bunds with open or unsecured stormwater valves?

35. Wash bay facilities dirty and / or have access to stormwater drains?

This checklist can be used on a regular basis to see if environmental housekeeping practices have improved at your site.
