IntroductionThis is the second edition of the2011 Environmental Events bookletand provides details of over 250events taking place in and aroundSwansea from June to December.These events include guided walksand cycle rides through some ofUK’s most beautiful countryside, anda wide range of talks, workshopsand training courses about wildlifeand environmental issues. There arealso lots of children’s activities inlocal nature reserves, in parks, onbeaches and in other interestingplaces. Most of the events are FREEor at low cost so everyone can getinvolved.

This booklet is compiled by the Cityand County of Swansea’s NatureConservation Team with the supportof Swansea Environmental EducationForum (SEEF) and funding from theCountryside Council for WalesCommunities and Nature strategic project. Biodiversity in Swansea

The City and County of Swansea’s natural environment is ofoutstanding quality and beauty. The diversity of landscapes andhabitats includes upland moorland, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches,heathland, woodland, wetlands, river valleys, grasslands, sanddunes and estuaries. These habitats, together with the many historicparks and gardens, pockets of urban green-space and large areas offarmland, support a huge diversity of plant and animal species andmake Swansea one of the most attractive and ecologically diversecounties in the UK.

There are, however, many threats to Swansea’s wonderfulbiodiversity such as lack of awareness, inappropriate management,recreational pressure, invasive species, pollution, climate changeand development.

Swansea Nature NetworkSwansea Nature Network is an innovative multi-site approach toincreasing visitation and economic development across the City andCounty of Swansea’s community wildlife sites. The projectcapitalises on Swansea’s natural environment by promoting andimproving access to and enjoyment of a network of wildlife sitesand natural open spaces in and around urban Swansea. A widerange of events has been organised throughout the year as part ofthis project.

Swansea Nature Network is a project part funded by the EuropeanRegional Development Fund through the Welsh AssemblyGovernment and is a component element of the CountrysideCouncil for Wales’ Communities and Nature strategic project.
