IntroductionThis is the first of two editions of the 2011Environmental Events booklet and provides details of over 230 events taking place in and aroundSwansea from mid-February to the end of July.These events include guided walks and cycle ridesthrough some of the UK’s most beautifulcountryside, and a wide range of talks, workshopsand training courses about wildlife andenvironmental issues. There are also lots ofchildren’s activities in local nature reserves, inparks, on beaches and in other interesting places.Most of the events are FREE or at low cost soeveryone can get involved.

This booklet is compiled by the City and County ofSwansea’s Nature Conservation Team with the supportof Swansea Environmental Education Forum (SEEF)and funding from the Countryside Council for Wales.If you have relevant events for the second edition,which will cover the period from June to December2011, then please contact the Nature ConservationTeam (contact details below). Biodiversity in SwanseaThe City and County of Swansea’snatural environment is ofoutstanding quality and beauty.The diversity of landscapes andhabitats include upland moorland,coastal cliffs, sandy beaches,heathland, woodland, wetlands,river valleys, grasslands, sand dunesand estuaries. These habitats,together with the many historicparks and gardens, pockets of urbangreen-space and large areas offarmland, support a huge diversityof plant and animal species andmake Swansea one of the most attractive and ecologically diversecounties in the UK.

There are, however, many threats to Swansea’s wonderfulbiodiversity such as lack ofawareness, inappropriatemanagement, recreational pressure, invasive species,pollution, climate change anddevelopment.

Swansea’s Nature NetworkSwansea’s Nature Network is an innovative multi-site approach toincreasing visitation and economic development across the City andCounty of Swansea’s community wildlife sites. The project willcapitalise on Swansea’s natural environment by promoting andimproving access to and enjoyment of a network of wildlife sitesand natural open spaces in and around urban Swansea. A widerange of events have been organised throughout the year as part ofthis project.

Swansea’s Nature Network is a project part funded by the EuropeanRegional Development Fund through the Welsh AssemblyGovernment and is a component element of the CountrysideCouncil for Wales’ Communities and Nature strategic project.
