by Osa HaleThe transformative power of the

imagination. The warm glow of the holidays through the lens of a magical childhood. The irresistible, saccharine allure of candy. There are many themes to Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, all summed up by one word: Nutcracker.

This year, the Northwest Ballet Theater will be upholding its established Nutcracker tradition with a splendid performance featuring professional and student dancers side-by-side. The holiday classic is a mainstay for dancers and audiences alike, and the performers are thrilled to bring new life to Tchaikovsky’s beloved tale.

“Part of the challenge as a dancer in the production is to perform the same material better than the year before, and make new material a step up from previous years,” explained dancer Josh Deininger. Deininger, who will be performing the delightful Grand Pas de Deux with fellow Seattle dancer Shannon Behrens (aka the Sugarplum Fairy), has danced in six renditions of The Nutcracker with the Northwest Ballet Theater. This year, Artistic Director John Bishop has granted Deininger the creative freedom to choreograph the Pas de Deux anew.

“I’m hoping to honor the original choreography of Marius Petipa to the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky, while bringing exciting new movement to the audience,” Deininger said.

The dancer’s new moves won’t be the only novelty bringing a fresh twinkle to the show. The talented and precious Julia Schwartz will play Clara, the little girl through whose eyes the audience sees the magic of the Nutcracker, this year.

“I always dreamed of dancing Clara,” the 12-year-old Schwartz said. “What makes this year so special is not just getting the chance to be Clara, but to be on stage in Act I with my mom and dad, who play my parents in the ballet, and my little sister Samantha, who is one of Clara’s friends.”

The Northwest Ballet Theater will be presenting The Nutcracker in three venues this season. December 6 and 7 will find the gorgeous production at the Port Angeles Performing Arts Center, with tickets available at the venue for $15-$35. The following weekend (December 13 and 14), the show will be at the Mount Baker Theatre, with tickets available at the box office or over the phone for $20-$34 each. The final performances will be on December 20 and 21, at McIntyre Hall, with tickets ranging from $24-$35, available in advance. The Saturday performances will

be evening affairs, beginning at 7:30pm, while the Sunday shows will be 2pm matinees.

Though regionally renowned, the Northwest Ballet Theater is not the only company putting on The Nutcracker.

Ballet Bellingham, an educational and performance group that is chock-full of dancing prowess, will be presenting their own beautiful rendition of the show. The locally produced show will feature choreography by Artistic Director Jessica Crook, performed by both student and professional dancers. Audiences can witness the dazzling spectacle on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the box office or over the phone for $20 each, with a $5 discount for students and senior citizens.

McIntyre Hall will also be hosting multiple performances of the beloved ballet. The Skagit Valley Academy of

Dance has one of the longest-running Nutcracker traditions in the area. Audiences are given the opportunity to see the community’s creative element, the homegrown talent that makes this show come to life with seemingly magical ease.

On December 5 and 6 at 7:30pm at McIntyre Hall, the Kingdom of Sweets will come alive with dancing fairies and the Land of Snow will glimmer. Sunday, December 7, will be an especially exciting day for families: the 3pm matinee performance is rounded out with a children’s “Meet and Greet” with the main characters of the show.

Whether it is your first time or your tenth, whether you go alone or with a loved one or the whole family, The Nutcracker is a joyful addition to the most wonderful time of the year. Northwest Washingtonians are lucky to have such a rich array of performances to choose from.

by Marla BronsteinDr. Adam Burdick, the newly hired

Artistic Director/Conductor of the Skagit Valley Chorale (SVC) is thrilled to present “Heralding Christmas 2014,” his premier concert with the chorale. You will experience irresistible passion, dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to the fine art of chorale conducting and

performance. There are two opportunities to attend this presentation of the SVC. Both will take place in Mount Vernon’s stunning McIntyre Hall, 7:30pm on December 13 and 2pm on December 14.

Dr. Burdick is proud of the community collaborations that have taken place in preparation for this program. Along with the time-honored Christmas Carol Sing-along, the concert will showcase additional pieces that are beyond traditional holiday songs. Conrad Susa’s Christmas in the Southwest: Carols and Lullabies will feature songs in various Spanish dialects, and incorporate the instrumentation of harp, marimba, and guitar accompaniment, a combination not often heard in Christmas music. Also included are vibrant Renaissance Spanish carols that have only been performed within the past 50 years.

Before Dr. Burdick took over the SVC reins from Janet Skones Hitt last spring, he had been teaching and conducting professionally throughout the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years. Dr. Burdick brings a wealth of experience to the SVC. His deep roots in the Pacific Northwest were firmly planted in his hometown of Pysht, located on the Olympic Peninsula. Dr. Burdick grew up listening to and playing various types of classical music even before the SVC was founded. His mother was an opera fan. His father was a violinist and enjoyed classical music. By the age of ten, Dr. Burdick took up the clarinet, and continued playing through high school. At the age of 16, he and his brother were making a regular 40-mile drive into Port Angeles, where he honed his musical chops with Port Angeles Light Opera Association. Musical theater was his transition to vocal music.

Dr. Burdick considers himself to be an emerging expert in teaching matching pitch using the Alexander Method. “If you can hear it, you can sing it.” (Barring any physiological reason why not.) He is also utilizing online communication and social media to facilitate communication with chorale members. His conductor’s

Dr. Adam Burdick is the new Artistic Director and Conductor of the Skagit Valley Chorale.

on-line blog helps to further communicate beyond the rehearsal time allotted. A most recent blog post discussed the value of vocal warm-ups and their use to improve vocal skills. An interesting read for all singers, the blog is currently available online.

Dr. Burdick is also very excited about the SVC spring

concert, which will include pieces by composers that are just coming into their own, as well as a section of Carl Orff’s musical composition, Carmina Burana. There will be new sounds coming from the chorale, and he can barely contain himself when talking about it!

Dr. Burdick looks forward to being able to grow the 100+ member SVC and looks forward to new members after the first of the year. The chorale is open to all ages. There is no audition, other than to determine vocal range. At this time, the soprano and alto sections are well staffed, but the chorale welcomes tenors and basses.

For more information about the SVC, the concert, or to find the conductor’s blog, check out their Facebook page or go to their website at www.skagitvalleychorale.org/.

Tickets are available at www.mcintyrehall.org , 360-416-7727 ext. 2 or toll free at 866-624-6897.

Prices for Saturday and Sunday are $16 for all house seats, $14 for seniors and students, or $25 for box seats. Discounts are available for purchase of 10 or more tickets.

by Joanna NesbitEach year, the creatively decorated

Christmas trees at the annual Festival of Trees benefit event offer rich and often poignant stories behind the ornament themes. For example, this season Selena Vogel, Festival of Trees committee member and a regular tree decorator, is commemorating her mother by adorning her tree in red cardinals and snow to celebrate her midwestern mother’s love of the Christmas holidays.

“The tree’s theme is ‘Alzheimer’s Is for the Birds’ in memory of my mother who lost her battle with Alzheimer’s a year ago at age 68,” says Vogel. “She was someone who never lost the magic of Christmas. As a fourth-generation Alzheimer’s sufferer, she knew she would probably get the disease, but she never lost her bravery or spirit.”

The benefit event, which brings in critical funding for Bellingham’s Health Support Center, is held in the Leopold’s Crystal Ballroom, 1224 Cornwall Ave., and consists of two events: a free Winter Wonderland Walk for all ages and an evening Gala Dinner & Auction.

The Winter Wonderland Walk is open Fri., Dec. 5, 11am-9pm, and Sat., Dec. 6, 10am-1pm, during which visitors can stroll the ballroom to view 20 full-sized, stunningly decorated trees while snacking on cookies and cider. Kids love the festive ambiance, and it’s a great way to kick off the holiday season, says DeLynn Lindberg, Executive Director of the Health Support Center.

This year’s tree themes include the circus, the beach, a red, white, and blue tree, Once Upon a Time, a Man Tree decorated entirely in tools, and Cat in the Hat, another memorial theme. Come see for yourself and soak up some of the stories.

The Gala Dinner & Auction will be held Sat., Dec. 6, from 6:30-9:30pm in the ballroom, and includes dinner, a silent auction, dessert dash, and live auctioning of the Christmas trees. The reasons for purchasing trees are as poignant as the ornament themes. Michele Seaburg, silent auction coordinator, says Festival of Tree organizers often don’t hear the stories of

the trees’ destinations until later, but invariably the purchaser intends the tree to go to someone in need. One year, a tree was donated to a family with five children who

had just lost their mother. Another year, the matchbox cars that adorned a tree were shipped to an orphanage in Dubai. From the cathartic process of decorating in someone’s memory, to donating a tree to a worthy cause, to contributing funding to the Health Support Center, the Festival of Trees gives on many levels.

Seaburg and Vogel both volunteer at the Health Support Center, a little-understood Bellingham service at 1212 Indian St. that serves some 105,000

people per year and operates on a shoestring. In its mission to facilitate peer-to-peer support, the Health Support Center assists health-related self-help groups by providing office and meeting space, equipment, and support services to 23 member organizations, such as Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Whatcom County, Multiple Sclerosis Support Group, and many others. By sharing a central location, the center is able to provide meeting space and

other services for free to its member groups. It also helps new support groups launch peer-to-peer services. Even if the Health Support Center doesn’t work directly with a particular support group, it can help individuals locate services in Whatcom County.

A resounding thank you goes out to the sponsors who make the event possible: Phillips 66, Kelly’s O’Deli, Superfeet, Leopold Retirement

Community, and St. Joseph Hospital.Tickets to the Festival of Trees Gala

Dinner are $50 and can be purchased at 360-733-6714. Purchasing tickets early is recommended! If tickets are sold out, be sure to stop in for the Winter Wonderland Walk. To learn more about the Health Support Center, visit www.healthsupportcenter.org.

Henderson and Benedict also appear in the show. Henderson accompanies on the piano, and Benedict acts as mistress of ceremonies, providing relevant background on the composers and musical plot lines.

They look forward to being in front of a new audience, especially in Lynden, a town known for the Claire vg Thomas Theatre and the classic Broadway musicals they perform. “We think this is an audience that will appreciate this celebratory show of Broadway,” says Henderson.

Benedict, agreeing with Henderson, is quick to add,“All of us involved are just madly in love with Broadway shows, and that is such a driving force.”

A Broadway Cabaret: The Encore plays at the Jansen Art Center at 321 Front Street in Lynden on December 13. Curtain is at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 at Village Books in Bellingham, the Jansen Gallery Shop or www.jansenartcenter.org. For details contact [email protected] or call 360-354-3600.

of the Broadway canon from Oklahoma to Wicked, A Broadway Cabaret: The Encore plays this month. When I sat down with producer Martha Benedict and music director Scott Henderson, they kept jumping on each other’s point to add one reason after another that their night-club-style Broadway revue was not to be missed.

After co-directing the epic 85th Anniversary Birthday Bash Revue at the Bellingham Theater Guild earlier this year, Benedict was encouraged to produce another, smaller-scale revue, acting as a sort of a spinoff. The first A Broadway Cabaret performed to sold-out audiences in October at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, and the Encore version will take them to the Jansen Art Center in Lynden.

Henderson, a past director of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, describes the production as a “kaleidoscopic look at some of the great musicals of the past hundred years.”

The tightly-organized show moves from song to song, with a myriad of simple quick changes from a costume rack in plain sight of the audience. Much of Henderson and Benedict’s work is not only focused on choice of songs, but maintaining an emotional and musical flow from number to number while also allowing the handful of performers a chance to catch their breath. “I worked it out pretty much on graph paper,” said Henderson. “It was just this very seamless, natural arrangement of things that we worked out very quickly.”

The cast is hand-picked by Benedict, all of whom appeared in the Guild’s Birthday Bash Revue. “They’re just a joy to work with,” she says. Martin Bray “certainly proved himself at the Guild. He could do something very serious, he could do

comedy; he’s very good at doing a lot with something that’s very subtle.”

Megann Schmidt’s assets are listed by Benedict in order of her “sparkling personality and gorgeous soprano.” Schmidt “is somebody who has a great deal to give and she does it all the time.”

Paul Henderson II is at once described as charismatic and hilarious, but also capable of ringing every meaning out of “Being Alive” by Steven Sondheim. He also choreographed the movement for the musical numbers.

Akilah Williams “can do almost anything.” From a soft ballad to rocking the house with “Nobody Does it like Me,” Benedict promises “you won’t want to take your eyes off her.”

The show also features a cameo from Edward Davidson, performing what has become a signature piece of his, “A More Humane Mikado” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. “He’s delightfully unpredictable at times and very, very engaging. Audiences warm to him immediately,” Benedict says, and Henderson adds, “Once he got his direction and blocking mapped out, he would play within those parameters. And
