J

J FormArt takes pride in man-

ufacturing products that are

normally considered discarded

material and surprisingly buy-

ers from the Western countries

have taken a fancy for these

items. Even ordinary materials

such as hessian or old paper are

used to create beautiful papier mache articles.

Old, discarded railway sleepers are used to

make tabletops or chairs that provide a rustic

look. The company does not believe in the term,

‘waste’. Even animal bones are used to decorate

table tops and boxes with inlay patterns. When

that is not available, “mother of pearls” is used

to create the ivory-like inlays.

The United States of America is JJ For-

mArt’s biggest market where there are environ-

ment concerns and the company's products are

appreciated a lot. Now, a few of the Scandina-

vian countries have started demanding the

company’s products. In fact, several buyers offer

suggestions on designs and materials to be used.

The company’s attempt to create environmental-

ly-friendly products is making an impact in

developed countries.

odhana Art & Crafts, a

decade old company had

started its business supply-

ing furniture to other

major manufacturers and

on gaining experience ven-

tured out on its own. Their

initial concentration was

the domestic market, while quality in production has

been their focus since inception. Soon, overseas buyers

took notice of their product’s quality and they start-

ed exporting their furniture.

The production is based on market needs and

demand. Though some of their products are con-

temporary in design, they also undertake hand-

crafted furniture for which Jodhpur is world

famous. The category is basically indoor furniture,

i.e. from living room to dining room, bedroom and

associated accessories complimenting the same.

Though the company has its own design team,

they are not averse to suggestions from buyers on

changes or modification of designs. It builds con-

fidence. Ultimately, it is the question of quality

that final users vouch for. The company’s main

market is the United States of America and Cana-

da. Though they have not participated in trade

fairs in the past, they now plan to take part in

them.

K

ohinoor Arts & Crafts has

been manufacturing hand-

icraft products over a

decade. It has made an

impact in the international

markets by the intricately

designed products made out of iron and other

metals. The in-house design team keeps ahead of

competitors through innovative designs.

The company’s artisans too are given a free

hand in suggesting designs and it is then evaluat-

ed internally of its feasibility. It is a team work,

the company avers. The quality of the raw mate-

rial is important to attain the desired design

development and once this is established, produc-

tion commences. Since it is voluminous work,

quality in each step of production is monitored.

The products are for display as well as for daily

use. At the same time, it is ensured that the

designs do not go out of fashion in a short period

of time. It is important that utility products

retain its utility value even after a few years not

withstanding newer designs that are brought out

each year.

he company’s products

are either steel or wooden

furniture for the United

States of America and

European markets. All its

steel furniture is in fold-

ing models and ideal for indoor as well as outdoor use.

Again, its wrought iron furniture is both for indoor

and outdoor use. It also manufactures steel gazebos

popular in European markets.

Kraftorium’s speciality is wooden furniture

painted in white in different textures. The colour

white is a symbol of purity and so are its prod-

ucts. Only a few wooden furniture such as tables

used outdoors are foldable while products like

racks are non-foldable. The entire range of paints

used is non-toxic.

Rajesh Kabra agrees that there is domestic

demand for gazebos but volumes are too low,

though a few South-based companies buy what is

already in store. Volumes are essential to achieve

economies of scale.

umbhat Exports, since its

inception, has been manu-

facturing furniture that is

strongly influenced by

Rajasthan’s ethnic designs

and motifs, be it boxes or

beds or wardrobes. All the products, the company pro-

fesses, is handmade and very little machining is done.

The wood, of course, is perfectly seasoned so

that craftsmen can work with it creatively. Many

of the designs are borrowed from old photo-

graphs or paintings and in a way the past is

revived and the tradition carried forward. Adding

to the speciality of the products are metal

embellishments.

Kumbhat Exports’ markets are Gulf coun-

tries, Spain and Portugal. Of late, Western

nations have been showing interest in such prod-

ucts. The products created by P. L. Kumbhat also

serve as decorative items for home décor. Domes-

tic buyers have also been evincing keen interest

though the products are for the discerning few.

A

ntiques have always fasci-

nated people all over the

world. Rajasthani

antiques are a different

class altogether. When R

P (Lalji) Singhal started

trading in antiques, four decades ago, he was the pio-

neer. At that time few understood the value

of antiques. Many jumped on the bandwagon as

the popularity of Rajasthan’s antiques spread and

the originals are difficult to find

now.

Most of the artefacts

sold today as antiques

are really reproduc-

tions, true to dimension, motifs and colouring. Jodh-

pur's artisans have mastered the art of reproducing

them to the exact details mostly from photographs

or old paintings. However, one can still find objects

of the colonial era, though they are strictly not

antiques in the real sense of the word, without

Rajasthani motifs or designs. Yet, buyers from the

United Kingdom are eager customers. Old, brightly

coloured wooden chests or drawers find a ready mar-

ket in Gulf countries. As for the European, Aus-

tralian and New Zealand markets, changes in design

patterns and colour combinations are carried out.

wide. EPCH is the apex body of

Indian Handicrafts exporters, set up

to promote Indian handicrafts.

Functioning under the aegis of

Development Commissioner (Handi-

crafts), Ministry of Textiles, Gov-

ernment of India, the Council

ensures optimal interface between

international buyers and the Indian

handicrafts industry to facilitate the

business of handicraft exports.

EPCH has been playing a stellar

role, right since its inception in 1986,

in projecting India’s image abroad

as a reliable source of inimitable

handicrafts. EPCH provides com-

In the 23 years, since its inception, EPCH has been consistently taking

Indian Handicrafts’ exports to new heights. The intense efforts of the

Council have resulted in tremendous growth in India’s exports. From Rs.

3,870 million worth of exports in the year of its existence (1986), the

exports have grown at the rate of 15 per cent every year.

These figures clearly indicate the industy’s capability to grow further,

given the right impetus. With the global economy improving, the handi-

crafts industry is all set to grow bigger than ever.

GROWING WITH THE TIMES

EPCH undertakes a plethora of activities to encourage and

actively promote the Indian handicrafts exporters by:

project of setting up of EXPOMART for

international business promotion. Conceived

on the lines of international b2b marts, the

mart is located at Greater Noida, near New

Delhi, where Indian exporters can showcase

their products and services.

National Centre for Design and Product

Development

The Council has set up a national level

design centre at New Delhi. This presti-

gious design centre is equipped with the

latest computer-assisted design tools and a

team of highly qualified professionals.

This team of professionals works in close

co-operation with exporters at the craft

centres for the development of new

designs.The Centre focuses on product

development and product design services.

It works towards developing latest designs

as per the international market require-

ments with the help of expert designers

from India and abroad. The centre has

engaged a number of Filipino designers

and also has MoU with several design cen-

tres across the world. It has also launched

a design bank for exporters.

National Centre for Photo & Picture Framing

Technology

National Centre for Photo & Picture Fram-

ing Technology has been set up at Saharan-

pur to provide newer technology for photo &

picture framing sector which is the premium

R

ajendra Mehta has been supplying

furniture to bulk buyers connect-

ed to large chain stores in the USA

and Germany. The prime consider-

ation in bulk supplies is maintain-

ing quality and sticking to the

time schedule. Thus far, Lariya Art Palace has been

able to do both to the satisfaction of customers.

The company’s owner does not believe in wasting

wood. The small pieces are utilised to make table

tops or side shelves that have, incidentally, attracted

the eyes of foreign buyers. Though such productions

may not be in bulk, but they do attract interest. In

fact, Rajendra Mehta utilises recycled wood to sup-

plement the waste pieces that is generated in the fac-

tory.

One of the uses that the “waste wood” is put to

is the manufacture of parquet tiles, which have

found a ready market in the West. The company has

taken up a few turnkey projects in France: these

include interior designing and furniture designs. All

the pieces are manufactured in Jodhpur and shipped

abroad.

lmost a decade into manu-

facturing furniture, the

company prefers ethnic

styling, including colours

and patterns, in its prod-

ucts. This, Lucky Creation

avers, is now gaining popularity in the Western coun-

tries. Its products are sold in the United States of

America, the United Kingdom, South Africa and a

few countries in the European Union.

Though some products may look rustic but it is

this feature that attracts customers. However, it is

not that simple to create such styles as it requires

great care and skills of artisans. Of course, the pat-

terns and colours used have to be in synch with West-

ern tastes. A great deal of studies has been done on

such matters and at times the buyers too provide

suggestions on patterns and colours.

The company also makes straight-line, solid

wood furniture but their forte is ethnic styles.

he company has been manu-

for more than two decades. Of

the smaller articles, it makes

gods and goddesses in marble,

wood, clay or iron. It also man-

The company's forte is refurbishing, redesigning

and reproduction of Shekavati art including furni-

ture. Buyers now have started understanding the

richness of Shekavati artefacts. They are normally

in vibrant colours. Though it may not be universally

accepted, but people who know the region and its

history are Ashok Jain’s customers. These are

exported throughout the world and admittedly peo-

ple of Indian origin are the company's main cus-

tomers.

Shekavati style furniture is in good demand in

Gulf countries. However, Lucky Art India's prod-

fittings and pronounced carvings. The company also

manufactures marble products in different sizes and

styles from small figures for decorative purposes to

large objects like water fountains and planters.

There are also finely chiselled trellis, mostly used in

ears ago Makers Mart started

with aluminium sheets to man-

ufacture various products. It

then turned its attention to

other metal sheets such as

brass and bronze. Meanwhile,

Makers Mart realised that it would be

worthwhile to start marble and stone carving, tradi-

tional crafts which Jodhpur’s artisans are tradition-

ally good at.

The demand for marble and stone products

varies from domestic to foreign clients: Makers Mart

has supplied enormous amount of marble and

stonework for temples in India while foreign markets

primarily utilise stone and marble artefacts to beau-

tify gardens or fireplaces. The company recently sent

a eight metric diametre marble water fountain to

Italy. In fact, the demand for water fountains is from

Italy and Germany though many Western countries

prefer marble fireplaces and mantlepiece fixtures. In

the United Kingdom the favourite product in

demand is planters made out of sandstone.

Makers Mart also produces metal sheet products

for decorative purposes and on special demand it

manufactures customised products as shown here.

N

aveen Bhoot started in a

small way as a vendor to

major handicrafts

exporters before venturing

out on his own. The prod-

ucts that Manav Creations

manufactures are typical household utility items,

wooden as well as metal and wooden products

embellished with metal strips. These products have

been received in the overseas markets.

The wooden products have a lot of carvings in

which Rajasthan's craftsmen excel. The metal

embellishments too, have designed impressions

that match carvings on wood. The products

designed for gifts are also similarly treated to

enhance their aesthetic appeal.

These products are marketed in Spain, parts of

France, Middle East and South Africa though

there are subtle differences in design treatment of

products sold in various countries.

Manav Creations has started manufacturing

typical Indian carved furniture. It has observed

ansi Art Export, since its

inception, concentrates only

on steel and wrought iron

products in order to main-

tain quality. The company

believes in making full use

of its core competence. Also, they believe that one

could be as creative with iron sheets and rods as with

wood and other metals.

The products are used mostly for decorative pur-

poses, be it wall hangings or displays on mantelpiece

and side tables. The utility products are in equal

demand mostly for kitchen and sometimes for keep-

ing gardening tools as well. The wrought iron furni-

ture it manufactures is mostly for outdoor use

though they are not averse to making indoor furni-

ture. Powder-coating or burn finish is popular

amongst buyers rather than painted look.

Mansi Art Export prefers to create its own

design but welcomes any suggestions or changes in

designs from buyers. It helps both ways, believes its

veterans. The company's market is the United States

of America and the volumes exported are large and

are able to achieve economies of scale.

he company has been manu-

fac turing handcrafted furni-

ture for over a decade. It is

labour-intensive work and can-

not be replaced by machines. It

can only be carried out by per-

sons with an eye for perfection, and not to forget

steady hands while carving.

Marwar Art Exports, however, is not averse to

making contemporary style furniture but depends

on volumes to be economical. There is good accept-

ance of its products in the United States of America,

Europe and New Zealand and the company is also

exploring newer markets.

Prithvi Raj Singh clarifies that the term furni-

ture does not end with beds and tables but encom-

passes a range of accessories from side tables, chairs,

sideboards, book cabinets, liquor cabinets, wine

racks, and a host of other items that complements

the décor of a bedroom or a dining or a living room.

The furniture created by Marwar Art Exports is

never painted. Instead, to highlight natural grains in

wood, the pieces are polished or given a lacquer fin-

ish to enhance the gloss.

riyesh Bhandari has a large collec-

tion of antiques and since these

antiques are just one or at the

most two pieces, MCB Exports

manufactures identical products.

While some of these are in great

demand in Gulf countries, Jordan and Turkey, there

are buyers from Spain and Portugal too.

The unit also manufactures steel and wrought

iron furniture. In the past too, Jodhpur was popular

for such types of furniture. The reasons are simple:

quality and workmanship. It is difficult to find intri-

cately carved or designed mouldings abroad and that

is the reason why MCB Exports’ designs are hits in

Italy, Germany and Japan as well as a few other

European countries. Gazebos in different sizes —

according to the demands of the buyers — are

manufactured by Priyesh Bhandari.

he company manufac-

tures both handicraft

products and furniture,

though its emphasis

remains more on furni-

ture. The German-based

designer provides design inputs to the company

which in turn ensures production of quality designs

for the European countries. The company is not

averse to suggestions or modifications from buyers.

New Light Art Exports are fastidious about qual-

ity since inception and particular about informing

buyers that cost cutting is not possible at the cost of

compromising on the quality. The buyers then come

to terms with the company's views. Quality means

cost and buyers now agree that high quality and low

cost is a combination that just does not work. The

company's main market is Europe, though it exports

to Australia and the United States of America as

well, but the volume is lesser than the European

market.

The company do manufacture handicrafts, not on

a routine basis but on specific demand. Again the

products are high-end be it display or utility items.

he company believes in using

minimal natural resources and

reduce the environmental

impact caused by it. It thus

uses only reclaimed wood in

the manufacturing of its fur-

niture. Its entire production is exported and foreign

buyers insist on reclaimed wood furniture only.

Original Art Galleries insists that it saves

wood by buying from those who demolish old

buildings or houses and putting it into good use,

which otherwise would have been used as fire-

wood. The old wood needs no seasoning as it has

aged and undergone seasoning through the years

of its use in old buildings. Moreover working

on old wood is easier than working on freshly cut

wood.

The old wood is toxic-free since it is not sub-

ject to artificial seasoning. Western buyers are

aware of this aspect and are now insisting on

reclaimed wood furniture. Also, its grains are

beautiful and simple toxic-free polish further

enhances its appeal. Even making ethnic designs

on old wood is easier, ensuring minimal wastage.
