The Enrolled Nurse Transition Program
The Enrolled Nurse Transition program is designed to support the participant in the transitional phase of their career by offering clinical support, access to a variety of learning opportunities, whilst promoting the participants’ own reflective practice.
Both the formal and informal learning strategies, along with combined support from management and the clinical staff, enhance the assimilation of
theory with nursing practice. Ongoing education is in the form of workshops and in-services. Review and debriefing sessions relating to professional and clinical progress are conducted throughout the program.
The opportunities to further develop skills, knowledge and confidence required for the role of an Enrolled Nurse is a principal component of the program.

Facility debrief sessions
All participants within the Enrolled Nurse Transition to Practice Program are expected to engage in debrief sessions. Participants are only expected to attend supervision at their allocated facility. It is recommended that you liaise with your Nursing Unit Manager in regards to your availability to attend supervision. The Enrolled Nurse Co-ordinator will email the NUM and CNE prior to each session to inform you of the location.
Provision of annual leave
• It is expected that each participant of the program will be allocated 2 weeks annual leave within their first 12 months of employment.
• Please see your Nursing Unit Manager to discuss this and arrange a suitable time.
Clinical rotationsAll participants will be asked to submit their workplace preferences prior to the commencement of the program. We will endeavor to meet all requests, however depending on availability of preferences this may not be possible. During the course of the 12 months, there will be 2 x 6-month rotations.
Rotations will be organised by the Workforce Manager at each facility/service in consultation with the ENTP Coordinator, taking into account principles of equity and choice of the EN whilst meeting the facility’s requirements.
Facilitated study days
During the 12-month program there will be 4 structured educational support days, which reinforce relevant clinical knowledge and skills for professional development.
Facilitated Study Day 1
DETECT: This is the face-to-face component of the ADULT Between the Flags Tier Two Education. This workshop includes didactic lectures and case studies to improve your knowledge and skills in recognising and responding to the adult patient who is clinically deteriorating.
Safety Culture: the SLHD Safety Culture Co-ordinators focus on safety and security for all staff in the district. The workshop focuses on theory and practical de-escalation skills and tools that can be used when confronted with challenging behaviours.
Facilitated Study Day 2
Practical information and case studies on Electrolytes, Palliative Care, Coping with stress, Diabetes and Time management.
Facilitated Study Day 3
Communication techniques focusing on challenging conversations, assertiveness and feedback.
Facilitated Study Day 4
Profession Development study day focusing on re-employment, interview tips and practical examples, and employment opportunities for ENs within the district.
Please note: It is your responsibility to negotiate study release with your NUM to ensure that these days are included in your roster requests.
14
Appraisals
As part of the program, you are encouraged to regularly seek feedback from the CNEs and NUMs as part of your reflective process and professional development. It is also a requirement of the program that you have regular feedback on your performance in the form of an appraisal which is a required by human resources. All graduate Enrolled Nurses must complete an interim (3-month) appraisal, which will consist of also identifying learning goals. The appraisal form is located on the intranet under forms: Performance Development & Review Form
You are expected to make an appointment with your NUM for your final appraisal. The final appraisal will involve reviewing your 3 month goals and documenting if the outcomes were met.
Email access
You will be assigned a NSW Health email address and it is advised that you check your email on a regular basis, as it is our primary choice of contact with you.
To access your work email at home go to: webmail.health.nsw.gov.au/my.policy You will require your employee number and staff link password to login.
Fitness Passport
Sydney Local Health District has joined Fitness Passport, which gives all staff and their families’ access to gyms and swimming centres at a discounted rate.
The Fitness Passport program is open for all permanent employees to join, and is another initiative of the District to promote staff health and well-being.
The Fitness Passport was designed based on the responses of staff from the general survey and will give access to more than 400 fitness facilities across Sydney.
At $13.95 per week, the Fitness Passport is a fraction of the membership price at most gyms and the biggest benefit is you can visit any of the member gyms as often as you like - you’re not locked into one. This will allow staff who work at various facilities in the District to go gyms in convenient locations before or after work and close to home.
A family membership at $20.95 gives both you and your immediate family members unlimited access and their own card.
Salary packaging
Salary packaging is an Australian Taxation Office approved way of paying for some everyday items and living expenses with your pre-tax salary. Salary packaging lowers your taxable income and increases your take-home pay, giving you more money in your pocket to spend on the things you want.
For more information please call 1300 476 278.

The role of your Nursing Unit Manager (NUM)
One of the most important relationships that you will form throughout your transition year will be with your Nursing Unit Manager (NUM). The role of the NUM will be to allocate a preceptor, discuss ward expectations and offer a formal orientation to your unit. She/He will also be responsible for rostering your shifts and therefore it is important to communicate with your NUM regarding your mandatory requirements to attend the facilitated learning sessions and supervision. As a new employee of Sydney Local Health District, you will be required to participate in regular performance reviews with your NUM to offer feedback and guidance throughout your transition to practice year.
The role of your Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE)
The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) contributes to the promotion of the education, professional development, and accreditation of nursing and midwifery staff at all levels. The CNE fosters a learning environment that is centred on evidence-based nursing and midwifery practice and supports a culture of learning and skills attainment in an endeavour to provide the highest possible standard of patient care. The CNE is guided by the principles of life-long access to learning and are a role model within their specialty area. The CNE will be able to assist you in completing hospital-based clinical skills assessments.
16
Your role as the Enrolled Nurse
As an Enrolled Nurse (EN), you will work with Registered Nurses (RN) as part of the health care team and demonstrate competence in the provision of person-centered care.
Core practice generally requires the EN to work under the direct or indirect supervision of the RN. At all times, the EN retains responsibility for his/her actions and remains accountable in providing delegated nursing care. The need for the EN to have a named and accessible RN at all times and in all contexts of care for support and guidance is critical to patient safety.
Although the scope of practice for each EN will vary according to context and education, the EN has a responsibility for ongoing self and professional development to maintain their knowledge base through life-long learning, and continue to demonstrate the types of core nursing activities that an EN would be expected to undertake on entry to practice.
ENs collaborate and consult with health care recipients, their families and community as well as RNs and other health professionals to plan, implement and evaluate integrated care that optimises outcomes for recipients and the systems of care. You are responsible for the delegated care you provide.

• Provide a forum for sharing information and ideas between members;
