A Thriving New Musical Scene at HearthstoneBy Penny Holcomb, Community Relations Director

EARD ANY GOOD MUSIC LATELY? If so, it’s probably coming from Hearthstone’s new-ly-formed resident chorus. What started in February as the brainchild of Hearthstone resident Gene Kersey has quickly become established as a popular and fulfilling new

activity among those who love vocal music.

The chorus’s first performance, sung to a large and responsive audience in Hearthstone’s living room, included many nostalgic favorites: Do-Re-Mi, Any Time, When You’re Smiling, America the Beautiful, and Happy Trails.

Most recently the chorus participated in Hearthstone’s music marathon fundraiser for Ore-gon’s Alzheimer’s Association on June 20. Their performance included patriotic favorites This Land Is Your Land and America the Beautiful, and ended with a lively, a cappella singalong of I’ve Been Working on the Railroad. An added bonus that afternoon was having Zane Moore as the chorus’s new keyboard accompanist. Zane, who is one of Hearthstone’s many talented staff members, brings a new level of musicality and depth to our singing group.

At a recent rehearsal Gene thanked members of the chorus for their eagerness in joining, and for their ongoing commitment to attending weekly rehearsals. He told the singers that, given their strong foundation – made all the more secure by bringing Zane on board – it’s time to take a behind-the-scenes advisory role with the chorus and pass the baton to com-munity relations director Penny Holcomb. Gene expressed deep gratitude to executive director Tom Freitag and all Hearthstone residents for their enthusiastic support of the chorus, and looks forward to seeing the singing group mature and flourish in the coming months and years.

On behalf of the entire chorus, I would like to thank Gene for bringing beautiful, home-grown vocal music into our lives. By sharing his rare combination of talents – a deep love for vo-cal music, his quiet but forceful leadership style, and his dogged determination – Gene has given us the promise of a robust and sustainable choral group within our community.

A Bit Of HeavenBy the Reigning King and Queen of Hearts Gene and Joanne Kersey

We’ve found a bit of heavenWe looked far and wide.Hearthstone is what we found,Of this we will not hide

Though we pondered where to go,The old folks home? That’s not to be.The youngest people we’ve ever foundAre at hearthstone is what we see.

Our days are full and happy,We work hard as can beTo laugh, talk and eat.Our life is so very free.

So these they say are our golden yearsTo live life as we please. We can play golf or power walkAt least until we give out at the knees.

There is much that you can do here:Movies, golf, bowl or perhaps even rap,Unless of course your body saysIt’s time to take a nap.No meals to prepare,

No yard work to do,Just laugh with your friendsTill your face turns blue.

Our food is delicious; The staff is sublime; The residents are happy; We have found our own paradigm.

The goal is now to live this lifeAs long as it is to be,And die as young as we can As late as possible, you see.

In this whole worldAnd all the places to see,Living here at HearthstoneIs where we choose to be.

Words to Live ByBy Dave McElheran, Chaplain

“Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!”

Psalm 27: 14 NKJV

Time stops for no one!! Perhaps that’s why it’s so frustrating when things don’t happen according to schedule. God’s timing is different from our timing. That’s why it is important to learn to wait on God. Waiting on God simply means allowing God to work things out according to His divine schedule.

Learning to trust God’s timing can help reduce anxiety. So wait, take courage, and draw your strength from God.

Barbara Louise Senft: A Wonderful Life & FamilyInterview by Ruben Wilson, Resident

BARBARA LOUISE SENFT was born to Ross and Daphne Stevens on January 1. Older brothers Bob and Jack are now deceased.

She received her formal education in Portland, Oregon, at Irvington Elementary and Grant High schools. As a child, she looked forward to marriage and raising a family.

Barbara worked as a volunteer at Bess Kaiser Hospital for several years prior to being hired to work in admin-istration. For 12 years she worked at Bess Kaiser as a secretary to 16 physicians who were chairmen of their medical departments and several hospital committees. “I loved my job. It was interesting, very challenging, and different every day. We all became great friends.”

Barbara met Dr. Bob Senft during their work at Bess Kaiser Hospital. He had a private practice in addition to serving as medical director at the hospital. Each had been married previously and had a family.

Romance developed and they were married on July 12, 1981, at the Old Church in down-town Portland. They lived in both Portland and Tigard. They have traveled in many of the states, often participating in Elderhostel service programs.

When Bob’s physical condition required more care, he chose to get an apartment in Hearth-stone at Murrayhill. Later, when Bob was transferred to Anna’s Place, Barbara had been living in their home and was ill for a year before selling their house. Her children were con-cerned about her living alone and she moved to Hearthstone.

Barbara’s hobbies have been many over the years with quilting with friends at the Tualatin Senior Center her favorite.

Over the years she had wanted to move back to Bend, Oregon, to retire. She was hoping she could buy the house she lived in until age seven. Her plans were to restore the old house to the quality she remembered. That item on her “Bucket List” had to be erased.

However, each summer Bob, who passed away in June, and Barbara and all of her children and grandchildren would spend a week at Sunriver, renting a friend’s house as their Christ-mas present. They scheduled their vacation time a year in advance so that they would not miss the family time. “A week with my family in Bend each summer is treasured.”

Their children have taken loving care of Barbara and Bob. Son Mike died in 2006. Julie is a fourth grade teacher in Sherwood. Brad works for Cres-cent Electric in Portland. Patti is a nurse in San An-tonio, Texas. Kathy is a nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospi-tal in Portland in the new mother/baby area.

Barbara has four grandchildren: Joel, Colin, Sarah and Kristyn. She also has two great grandchildren: Aidan Charles who will be four in August and Gemma Daphne, an infant named after Barbara’s mother (now deceased).

Barbara believes that God has been good to her to give her such a wonderful family!

Der Rosenkavalier: A Comic Opera in Three ActsThursday, July 14, 1:00 pm

Hearthstone’s Multnomah TheaterStarring: Elisabeth Scharzkopf, Sena Jurinac, Anne Liese, Otto EdelmannPremiere: Court Opera, Dresden, 1911.

Set in an idealized Vienna of the past, Strauss’s most popular opera concerns a wise woman of the world who is involved with a much younger lover but ultimately is forced to accept the laws of time, giving him up to a pretty young heiress. Hofmannsthal’s fascinating libretto deftly combines comedy, dreamy nostalgic fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking touches of philosophy and social commentary. Strauss’s magnificent score combines the refinement of Mozart with the epic grandeur of Wagner.

Heart to Heart: God’s AppointmentBy Carol Porter, Resident

“Remember: you go nowhere by accident.Where you are going…God is sending you.And where you are…He has placed you.

God has a purpose for your life…right where you are.”*

Isn’t it awesome to know that these words are true for each and every one of us? Today, you and I are present at this very time and place by God’s appointment! This gives up every reason to live our days with confidence and joy.

*The above quote is part of a benediction offered by former Chaplain of the United States Sen-ate, the Reverend Richard Halverson.

Did you know Anna’s Place has a Men’s Group?By Frank Pablo, Life Enrichment Coordinator

The gentlemen living at Anna’s Place have been very busy lately. Our group has been play-ing cards, taking nature walks, going out to lunch, and woodworking.

Our card games are lots of fun and can even be a little competitive. There is a lot to see around the Hearthstone grounds during our nature walks. We have lunch in the private din-ing room every other week, which is always a treat.

Recently, the men demonstrated their carpentry skills by sanding and painting a cabinet, which will be used for storage in Anna’s Place. It’s been a busy month for these guys. Next month promises to be full of more projects, walks and bonding.

Heat, Sun, & Meds: A Bad CombinationBy Angel Higbee, Exercise Instructor

Some drugs make you more sensitive to summer’s high temps and sunlight. Take these steps to stay safe.

Five Smart Strategies

1) Know your meds: Always check the warning labels on your prescription. Ask the pharma-cist if your medications make you more sun or heat sensitive. You can also ask your doc-tor if you can take your meds at night.

2) Keep yourself hydrated: Sip liquids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty (wa-ter is the preferred liquid).

3) Be sun-safe: Use sunscreen daily and reapply often. Cover up if possible when you are outside to reduce the likelihood of skin related problems such as heat rashes.

4) Stay cool: Do outdoor activities in the morning or evening.

5) Know the signs of heat illness: If you develop a headache, racing pulse, rapid breathing; feel light-headed, nauseated or weak; lie down in a cool room with your feet above your heart. Apply a wet cloth to your skin and drink a ½ a cup of a sports drink or a solution of 1 teaspoon of salt in a quart of water every 15 minutes.

The following drugs make you more vulnerable to sun and heat:

USE DRUG

Allergies Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Congestion Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed)

Overactive bladder Oxytrol and Vesicare

Diabetes Chlorpropamide (diabinese)

Bacterial Infections Most antibiotics

Depression Tricyclic, amitriptyline (Elavil) and doxepin (Sinequan)

Pain & Inflammation Ibuprofen, naproxen & topical relievers relievers

Blood Pressure ACE inhibitors (benazepril, loensin, capoten, angiotensin II receptor antagonists such as valsartan (diovan) Thiazide diuretics such as Diuril and Hydrodiuril
