The Christian life can be likened to a journey. The Holy Spirit is our guide...He leads us daily. And He is always guiding us to what is best for our life. The key to a successful and enjoyable journey is to follow Him.

But what does it mean to follow God? Basically...to obey Him, to follow His lead, to do what He says. So many times we get ahead of God. We may think we know the best direction to take on our journey, or we get impatient with His timing and make a wrong turn because it looks quicker. The problem is, once we realize that road leads to a dead end, we have to go all the way back to where we got off course. The good news is, God is there—waiting to take the lead again and show us the right way to go.

The Lord has each of our journeys perfectly planned. We need to fully understand that He loves us...that He is good and righteous and just...that we can trust Him. We can trust Him to lead us in the direction that is right for us. We can trust Him to correct us when we stray and guide us back to the right path. We can also trust Him with others our paths cross. We can trust Him with our life...period.

DEARFRIENDS,Throughout this issue, we’ll be sharing more about God’s character and the importance of trusting Him and getting in line with His Word and His leading.

Yes, life is a journey. And we can enjoy it. Follow the Holy Spirit’s lead, because He knows the way. Sure, not everything that happens is always so enjoyable, but He is with us even then. And He is always leading each of us into all the good He planned for our life long before we were ever born.

Enjoy the journey...

“ Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things.” - Cicero

Have you ever considered the value that shared memories bring to relationships? Fond memories are the foundation of my dearest friendships and of my relationships with loved ones. I cannot think of my family without thinking of the wonderful times we’ve had together throughout the years. I believe memories enrich our relationships in the following ways:

Memories Draw Us TogetherMemories are meaningful because they are the exclusive territory of those who took part in creating them. There’s a sense of intimacy that comes from a shared experience, since only those involved have access to the memory of it.

The uniqueness of shared experiences explains why we have inside jokes that are incomprehensible to anyone apart from our closest friends.

As newlyweds, Margaret and I led a small church in Hillham, Indiana. I have memories of faces, places and events in Hillham that are incredibly signi cant to me, but no one except Margaret would understand why they mean so much to me. Since my wife was at my side and shares my memories, we can reminisce and laugh about them. Our mutual remembrances draw us together.

Memories Serve as Connection PointsEach person has a one-of-a-kind personality, a unique vantage point in life, and his or her own ideas and opin-

ions. Yet, our lives intersect, and we experience each day in the context of relationships. Together we encounter all sorts of events and situations—some humorous, some signi cant, and others simply ordinary. These shared moments familiarize us with one another and give us a feeling of connectedness.

Even when we have lost touch with old friends, we can instantly connect if we cross paths. Why? Because we never lose the memories that we share, and those past memories serve as a connection point to reengage in the relationship.

Memories Generate Positive EmotionsWe enjoy reliving fond memories when we join together with loved ones. At family gatherings or class reunions, stories about “the good old days” can go on for hours and hours, punctuated by roars of laughter. Our memories stir up emotions of warmth and happiness, and they remind us why our relationships are so valuable to us.

Seven Ways to Make a MemoryMost memories don’t happen by accident. We can plan our lives in order to create lasting memories with the ones we love. Here are seven principles for making memories...

1) Initiative—Make Something HappenAs Lewis Carroll once said, “It’s a poor sort of memory that only works backward.” Life isn’t lived in reverse, yet many

people spend their days yearning for the past. Instigate fresh memories by starting new family traditions or by inviting your friends to partake in activities that will help them and you continue to grow and learn.

2) Time—Set Aside Time to Make It HappenIf we aren’t careful, the humdrum routine of life crowds out joyous moments with the ones we love. Guard your calendar so that work never overruns your relationships with parents, children or a spouse.

3) Planning—Plan for Something to HappenMost people don’t lead their lives; they accept their lives.

Consciously choose to live a life worthy of remembrance. Be intentional about planning events to celebrate the relationships that matter most to you.

4) Creativity—Find a Way to Make Something HappenInstead of watching football for eight hours straight, get off the couch and exercise your creativity. Whether a cake, a craft, or a construction project, strong memories are made when people build something together.

5) Shared Experiences—Make Something Happen TogetherMemories compound when you share them with someone you love. Spoil those you care about by treating them to their favorite restaurant or taking them to their favorite travel destination.

6) Mementos—Show That Something Happened“Almost anything you do today will be forgotten in just a few weeks,” says John McCrone. “The ability to retrieve a memory decreases exponentially unless boosted by

arti cial aids such as diaries and photographs.” Take pictures, write in a journal, and buy souvenirs so that you have keepsakes to keep the memory alive. These physical reminders evoke the emotions of pleasant times spent with friends and family.

7) Relive the Memory—Talk About What HappenedIn conversations, revisit your memories. Share stories and recall the humor of past events. Talking about your memories brings them to life and allows you to reconnect with the magical moments of days gone by.

II teach a lot on love and I know God wants me to get this message across to people. I know that because a lot of times I don’t have peace to talk about anything else!

After teaching for thirty-two years, I’ve come to the conclusion that love is the most important message in the Bible. I really feel like this is part of the legacy God wants me to leave in these later years of my life.

Being a Christian isn’t about making a weekly trip to church. We need to develop the character of God so others can actually see Jesus working in a practical way.

Ephesians 5:1 says that we are to be imitators of God.

Jesus said, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father.” Well, Jesus paid the ultimate sacri ce for our sins. He personi ed the perfection of God’s love.

CHARACTER LOVE

Love isn’t just something God does—it’s who He is. As Christians, we need to learn how to re ect His love.

How He Loves UsThe Bible talks about various kinds of love. There’s the Greek word “phileo,” which means friendship or tender affection. Then there’s “eros,” which is the passionate love we feel for a lover. But there’s a third kind—a higher kind of love.

“Agape” is the kind of love God has toward His Son and the human race. It’s a love that sacri ces.

John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…(NIV).

There are so many scriptures on this topic. It’s really something you should sit down and study personally. Another scripture that teaches the concept of “agape” love is Matthew 5:44. It tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

It’s not dif cult to pray for people who are good to you. But it does stretch you to pray for people who have wounded you. It’s easy to hang out with your friends at church. But it’s harder to seek out that person who looks like they’re miserable and alone and just listen to them awhile. You may not enjoy it, but you do it for them anyway. That’s “agape” love. It’s sacri cing your comfort to do what’s righteous.

You can love people by being patient with them. You can love people by being understanding with them. You can love people by saying something encouraging or by not saying anything when you could.

Humans are inherently sel sh, and if we don’t soak up a lot of teaching and encouragement to love people, we just begin to drift off again into What about me? What about me? We have to declare war on sel shness. We need to be good to people on purpose. And we have to continue studying scriptures on love.

10 | ENJOY ING EVERYDAY L I F E | joycemeyer.org

“ There are so many brokenhearted people in the world, so many people who are full of self-hatred and self-rejection. God is training us up to help them.”

The Grace to GrowGod isn’t bothered that we haven’t arrived yet. He knows we’re only human. But He does want us to continue growing. We’re not meant to live stagnant lives, never moving forward in our faith. Where’s the adventure in that? We need to be able to look back at our life and see some changes taking place in us.

I used to be a Pharisee. I think I could have been the chief of Pharisees. I had a real religious act going on, but I wasn’t really doing anything to help anybody. At some

point God led me to ask myself: What am I doing to help anybody? Am I just in this thing so God will make my life better?

When we’re in a place of questioning, that’s the best place to be—to be constantly striving toward perfection in Christ.

First John 4:12 says, No man has at any time [yet] seen God. But if we love one another, God abides in us….

There are so many brokenhearted people in the world, so many people who are full of self-hatred and self-rejection. God is training us up to help them.

Are you willing to go where God wants you to go? Are you willing to sacri ce your comfort for someone else’s sake? Are you ready to re ect God’s love?

The moment we receive Christ, we step into a lifetime journey—a journey where we continually grow in right behavior.

Little by little, from glory to glory, day after day, our be-havior improves. It is vitally important that before you try to change your behavior, you know who you are in Christ.

I think in church today we need to speak af rming words over people. We need to resurrect this benediction in Numbers 6:24-26: The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; the Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace….

In other words, God’s smiling at you. Think about it. Every time you smile at someone you’re saying to them,

“I approve of you. I accept you. You’re cool.”

God not only approves of you, He’s smiling over you. He loves you! You need to get that so deeply rooted within your heart that nothing can ever take it from you.

Finding the Path to ProgressWhen you’re rooted in God’s love, He’s going to help you stand up in faith and start walking. But you can’t go ahead of Him trying to do good works on your own. You have to know the Word. And it’s not easy to get the Word in you. Your human nature will ght it.

I remember feeding my babies and as long as I was giving them bananas and peaches, everything was great. But when I’d slip in a spoonful of peas, they’d go “Phfttt!” So I’d scrape the peas off their chin and shove it back in their mouth again. It took me a while, but sooner or later they were eating peas.

It’s the same with baby Christians. When we start consuming God’s Word, we start growing up spiritually. We stop walking in the esh and start doing what He wants us to do.

No matter how badly we want to obey God, we can’t do it on our own, because God won’t let us do anything apart from Him.

Proverbs 4:18 tells us the path of righteousness shines brighter and clearer every day as we continue in God’s Word. The key word here is continue. We’ve got to love the Word, study the Word, and listen to the Word so it can transform us.

We all want to be able to look back at the previous year and say, “I’ve improved. I’m more patient. I’m more giving. I’m less sel sh.” If we have the Word in us, we can do that.

Looking for the Right Signs Have you ever run a yellow light? Maybe you’re in a hurry and just think, “I can make it through this.” If you do that over and over, you’re bound to end up in a wreck. Well, it’s the same with God’s Word.

If we go ahead and do what we know we shouldn’t be doing and just try to sneak by, we can end up getting hurt. God’s Word is here to protect us.

If you’ve made mistakes, don’t spend half the day beating yourself up. But don’t take a sloppy attitude toward sin either. Sincerely repent and go on.

Hebrews 5:14 says, Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the differ-ence between right and wrong (NLT).

Conviction is a positive thing. It’s the Holy Spirit letting you know in your heart that your attitude stinks or that you’re on the wrong path. It’s a signal to turn around and go in the right direction.

‘I ’ve improved. I ’m more patient. I ’m more giving. I ’m less selfi sh.’

The TruthAbout Obedience4-CD SERIESby Joyce Meyer

joycemeyer.org

As crazy as it sounds, conviction can actually make your life pretty sweet. This new series helps you understand the benefi ts of obeying God’s little promptings to “do the right thing.” Stop struggling over temptation and start enjoying the goodness of living in agreement with God.

God loves me if I never change or grow. But I’m not going to be able to glorify Him if I don’t keep changing and growing. And I’m not going to be able to help more people if I don’t keep changing and growing.

Learning to Love ConvictionAn obedient lifestyle is the one and only real true way we can show God we love Him. So, when you feel the convic-tion of the Holy Spirit, you should celebrate. There are things now that I am seriously convicted about that twenty years ago, I wouldn’t have recognized at all. And that means I’m growing.

We need to learn to celebrate our spiritual victories. It’s great to strive toward a goal and press on, but there are times when we need to just say, “God, I’ve come a long way. I’m going to celebrate!”

Whatever it is you like, do it with enthusiasm. Give God a shout. Do a dance. Get yourself a pedicure or a cookie or a pair of shoes. Go play a game of golf. Bless somebody else.

In Psalm 18:19 David said, “God is pleased with me.” David wasn’t perfect, but he knew God delighted in him. And God is pleased with you. Not because everything you do is right. It’s because He sees your heart. God is smiling over you.

A God Who Smiles Over You I have a grandson who’s going be one in just a few weeks, and he’s on the verge of walking. Well, my son called us because every little bit of progress he makes, we want to hear about it. My son was so proud. He said, “Travis stood up by himself!” And I was like, “Oh, Dave, Travis stood up by himself today!” A friend of mine was with me and she said, “He did?!”

We didn’t react negatively and say, “Well, just how long was it before he fell down?” We were so thrilled with his progress! We wanted to know every little detail of how it happened and where it happened and if he was getting ready to stand up again. We just went on and on about it!

That’s the level of excitement I think God has for His kids. He just wants us to keep going, and with every tiny step we take, He’s just as thrilled as can be.

So are you with me? Let’s keep walking.

Walking the Streets of Port-au-PrinceIt was on the Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions trip to Haiti that we met Ena and also traveled to Port-au-Prince to get a rsthand look at the devastation. I’ll never forget what I saw there. The rubble was massive. We were warned not to get too close to the tilted buildings. I didn’t. Not for fear of it falling on me, but because the stench of dead bodies was too overwhelming to approach.

Life in Port-au-Prince is moving forward—as much as possible anyway. Thousands of people ood the streets striving to make a living. But everywhere we drove, we couldn’t miss the effects of the earthquake. More than a million homeless are living in tent cities, mostly made from branches holding up bed sheets and blankets—tents sandwiched together in any open space of land possible.

Nearly everyone I spoke to lost someone in the earthquake. Few were able to have a proper funeral, because for many Haitians, they’ll never nd their loved ones.

Mass Graves at TitanynThis was Darline’s fear…that her mother was one of tens of thousands who are buried in the mass graves at Titanyn.

I didn’t really know what to expect here. Part of me was dreading the trip, but the other part wanted to see…hoping it would give me a stronger realization of what happened to these people. It took us more than thirty minutes from Port-au-Prince to get to Titanyn, and it was de nitely not at all what I expected.

B Y K A C I E C A M P B E L L

(Port-au-Prince, Haiti) - It had been fi ve days since the earthquake, and Darline had given up looking for her sixty-nine-year-old mother Ena. Had Ena joined the 230,000 parents, children, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that were lost that day?1

Darline didn’t know, but just below the rubble of one of the city’s largest cathedrals, this faithful woman was alive…waiting for rescue.

In Ena s̓ EyesWhen I met Ena, her faith was evident in the details of her face. As she told me about that day and her rescue, an array of emotions ooded through her eyes. She was on her way to the Cathedral to pray when the earth began to shake. Standing inside a courtyard, the four walls around her began to close in.

“Jesus was there with me. I heard Him say, ‘Be quiet my little child. Stay still, and you will be ne,’” Ena shared lifting her arms up in praise to God.

And so she lay there, under a massive concrete wall…for eight days. With no food or water, she was forced to drink her own urine just to survive. Every day she prayed that God would save her…and He did.

After being pulled from the debris, Ena was taken to the USNS Comfort for surgery on her right thigh. She was then transported to the Love A Child campus for recovery. This is where I met her.

The graves are in a trash dump.

The only indication that the graves are here is a small white sign by the road that reads “Me’s pou viktim 12 Janure 2010 YO” (“For the victims of January 12”). On a large section of the dump sits approximately six large mounds of dirt and gravel—the locations of the graves.

And on the hill behind those mounds sits a white cross covered in strips of black cloth, which is considered the symbol of death. There were no mourn-ers when we arrived…just men with machetes digging through the garbage.

Standing there, my heart broke. I had heard the stories on the news and had interviewed several survivors on this trip, but it wasn’t until this moment that death became a reality for me.

My only comfort was that even in the midst of so much tragedy and loss, encouraging things are happening in the lives of so many Haitians. People are coming to the Lord and miracles are happening.

feed the Haitians living in the recov-ery camp. Three times a day, Ena and the others recovering here are served a hot meal.

The Future of HaitiOf all the people I met in Haiti, one thing stands out to me—they have so much hope. I wish you could see the joy in their faces, the gratefulness they have when they receive the care they need so badly along with the assurance that they are loved. And I wish you could hear their voices lifted in praise to God. It’s strange for a nation that has nothing—and will des-perately need help for years to come.

Thank you for being a part of bringing hope to these people and many others like them. It’s going to be a long process to restore this nation, and we are going to need your continued support as we continue to bring the love of Christ and relief to Haiti and beyond.

Jesus Healing Center Open 24/7At Love A Child, our ministry partner in Haiti, they were also working immediately after the earthquake to help others like Ena who had been trapped under rubble, suffered broken limbs or even worse.

They began using the Jesus Healing Center, a clinic fully supported by the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries, as a 24/7 emergency center. Making multiple trips into Port-au-Prince each day, they would pick people up off the street and bring them to the clinic for treatment.

Overwhelmed with grief and running on little to no sleep, Sherry Burnette, cofounder of Love A Child, said great relief came when she got a call from Hand of Hope. “They offered to help us. And even though I didn’t know what to ask for at that moment, it was such a relief to know that the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries were supporting us.”

Relief Is On Its WayHand of Hope team members imme-diately began to coordinate getting relief supplies and physicians into the country.

Because of the nancial support of our friends and partners, we were able to respond with 21,000 pounds of medical supplies and household items, a small team of orthopedic surgeons and a much needed hand-held, portable X-ray machine.

Love A Child also began using por-tions of the 270,000 meals shipped by our partners, as well as food donated by other relief organizations, to help

Let’s look at three important traits of God’s character.

1. JUSTICEOut of all the aspects of God’s wonder-ful character, the one I personally enjoy studying the most is justice. God is a God of justice. That word justice is so awesome because it means that He will always make anything that’s wrong right. For example, if somebody mistreats me, I don’t have to worry about it because God is going to bring justice. He loves justice.

Dave told me one time that God showed him during his morning prayer time that nobody can really cheat you if you keep your faith in God. If somebody takes something from you, don’t sweat it. Even if God has to work it out through a hundred people to get it all the way back around to you, you will get it back.

One way or the other, what was unjustly taken from you will come back to you. Nobody can mistreat you and get by with it if you have your faith in God.

2. GOODNESSGod is good—this fact never changes. And He’s good all the time—not just once in awhile or when things go your way. Psalm 34:8 says, Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him (NIV).

GOD’S AMAZING CHARACTER IS OUR EXAMPLEThese three traits are not the only characteristics of God, but they are three signi cant and powerful ones. With the help of the Holy Spirit, each of us can incorporate these traits in our own personality.

I encourage you to spend some time looking up these three traits in the Bible and studying the magni cent character of Christ. Find a good con-cordance or use an online Bible search engine and discover what the Word says about justice, goodness and holi-ness. Then study these three traits for the next thirty days, begin to practice them in your daily life, and see what God does… You won’t be disappointed.

By the way, I would love to hear about your results, so please send me an email or letter and share how your life has been blessed after studying the justice, goodness and holiness of God.

Let me tell you something: When you are having personal trouble and all hell seems to be coming against you, one of the best things you can do is speak this out loud, “God is good. God is good. I may be having trouble, but it is not God’s fault. God is good.”

3. HOLINESSGod is holy. What does that mean? In the Greek, to be holy is to be righteous—or to be right. You know I think it would make our lives a whole lot easier if we would realize that God is always righteous.

To be honest, it has helped me in my walk with God, to realize that whatever He does is right whether I like it or not.

He’s right. Whether it feels good to me or not, it’s right. And whether or not I agree with it, He’s right.

Holiness means abstaining from evil conduct. It’s about being pure and clean from all the de lements of sin.

I have a cold this morning.

It’s the fourth day I’ve had this cold. Now, this isn’t earth shattering I know, but I don’t often get sick and the truth is, I am lousy at it. I’m moping around the house, carrying a box of tissue, feeling sorry for myself.

A friend just called to check on me; she offered to pray for me at the end of our brief chat. As she began to pray for God’s healing and the life of Christ to ll my body, I became embarrassed. What a baby, you are!, I was telling myself. She shouldn’t be praying for you. She should be praying for someone who is really sick.

Then I recognized a subtle enemy of mine—diminishment.

It’s that old familiar feeling of I’m not worth it or I don’t measure up or I’m not quali ed or If people really knew the

truth about me, they wouldn’t like me. Recognize the feeling? Diminishment is an enemy of every woman I know.

It Doesnʼt Matter Who You AreI have women friends who are absolutely beautiful. But when someone pays them a compliment, they are so quick to dismiss it: “Oh, you’re just being kind.” They’ll begin to point out their aws: “I wish I had your hair.” They might say, “Thank you,” but you can see the compliment bounce off like a tennis ball. They do not believe they are beauti-ful. Their view of themselves is deeply and profoundly diminished.

What about you—what do you see when you look in a mirror? Do you see yourself as beautiful, quali ed, worthy? Me neither.

Consider the SourcesEvery woman lives under a cloud of diminishment. Where does it come from? Two sources.

First, there are wounds that pierced our hearts when we were young. Playground taunts, betrayals, loneli-ness, abuse. Those wounds brought a message of who we are and who we will never be. Because those messages were delivered with pain, they felt true. We believed them. We still believe them.

My mother told me many times how she wept when she learned she was pregnant with me. It pierced my heart: I am a disappointment. My very existence causes pain. And so I have spent fty years believing that I am and always will be a disappointment. (That is, until Jesus came in. I’ll get to that in a minute.)

All of us have been wounded into believing terrible things about ourselves. So we diminish who we are and what we do, what we offer and what we bring.

Then the enemy jumps in.

Satan uses our wounds to accuse us: No one will ever love you; you aren’t worthy of being loved. If you’ll pay attention when you pass a mirror, you can hear his accusations. Ugly. Foolish. Stupid. You know what I mean. And most of us just go right along with the accusations—we make agreements with our enemy! We accept the diminishment! That is how it really gets a hold of us—through our wounds and our agreements with the enemy.

Don’t miss Stasi Eldredge on Enjoying Everyday Life June 7. Check your TV listing for stations and program times in your area or visit www.joycemeyer.org/tvlistings.

Recognizing God s̓ AuthorityNow for the good news: Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted and to set the captives free (see Isaiah 61:1-3). That includes me, and that includes you!

The healing part begins when we invite Jesus to come into our wounds and bring His love, His mercy, His healing grace. He waits for our permission; when we invite Him into a speci c wound or memory, He comes.

Jesus breaks the hold the enemy has had on us and lifts us out of diminishment and accusation so we can walk in the light! But we must play our part—we must break the agreements we’ve been making with our enemy!

You are a daughter of God. You are worth loving. You are cleansed of all your sins by the work of Jesus Christ.

You re ect the glory of God. You are beautiful. You are uniquely gifted and quali ed by God to ll a place in the world no one else can ll.

Today, I say “NO!” to diminishment. I say “YES!” to the love of God, yes to the truth of who I am in Christ. Join me! No more diminishment!

“I have friends who are absolutely beautiful. But when someone pays them a compliment, you can see it bounce off them like a tennis ball.”

Each one of these verses invites us to follow the Lord more closely into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. And every bit of progress we make calls for more trust...and more obedience. Take some time right now to refl ect on your relationship with God.

1. First, we are called to follow His lead. Are you following the Lord? Describe where you feel you are on your journey.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Next, we see that as we follow Him, we grow in our ability to hear and understand His voice and will follow Him even more closely. Is your personal journey progressing like this? What part does obedience play in your progress?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. The third verse invites us to actually experience God’s presence personally as we trust Him. (Remember, obedience is a direct result of trust.) Are you experiencing more of God’s presence right now? Periodically? Regularly?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Finally, we learn that we can even come to a point of simply wanting to live in this intimate fellowship with Him at all times! Have you come to this point? How is God leading you?

DEARFRIEND,Every day life gives you the opportunity to feel bad about yourself.

And most of the time, when you’re feeling bad, you begin to believe it’s your fault.

So stop—God doesn’t operate by shaming people into feeling guilty. You were not built for guilt—guilt and shame don’t produce the life God created you to live. That’s not how He works.

Not so long ago, during one of our confer-ences, Dave and I were getting ready for an afternoon session. It was the last session and by that point, I was exhausted.

On my way to my seat, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something I knew would give me just what I needed to “ nish strong.” It was a chocolate chip cookie! I broke off a piece and ate it and enjoyed every second of it.

When I grabbed the cookie, Dave saw me. Now, we had recently started a new exercise and eating plan, and eating the cookie was not part of the plan for that day. So he asked me, “Did you just eat part of that cookie?”

One of my friends saw what happened, and she put her arm around me and said, “You deserve that cookie, and if I were you, when

this last session is over, I would go buy a pair of shoes to go with it!” (She knows how much I like shoes.)

I know how much Dave loves me, and he’s so good to me — he had my best interest in mind. But my friend realized, in that moment, the chocolate chip cookie was like a gift from God.

When I got up to speak, I told the audience this little story and they roared with laughter and applause. In fact, this story has contin-ued to hit a nerve with people because so many of us wrestle with feeling bad about feeling good. Sometimes we feel bad about enjoying our lives.

God never intended for you to be loaded down with guilt. You were created to enjoy your life and for that life to spill over onto others in hopes that they might enjoy a relationship with God as well.

The Lord will convict us when we make bad choices, but in those times, the emphasis and correction will focus on what we did, not on who we are. Your constant, accusing enemy works the opposite way. The devil doesn’t just attack your mistakes—he uses them as ammunition to condemn you as well.

Have you ever heard these accusations: “You’re a terrible wife, an awful mother and no one really loves you.” “You shouldn’t eat that…buy that…do that. Who do you think you are? You don’t deserve that!”

Romans 8:1 tells us, Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus....

I like how The Message Bible describes it: With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation.

That’s what guilt and shame do—they create a low-lying black cloud that ruins everything. For no reason and without warning, they can drift into your mind and heart and steal the joy and peace God wants you to have.

Don’t misunderstand me, I rmly believe in self-discipline and the power of a focused life,

especially in healthy living and wise nancial decisions. But I also know that so many of you, like me, can get absolutely discouraged when we feel like we miss the mark, especially when we are trying our hardest to do what is right.

Chocolate chip cookies, new shoes or any other material items are not what bring joy to my life—Jesus brings my joy. But the more I have discovered how not to live with con-demnation, the more I have been able to enjoy the things God gives me. And you can too...if you’re willing!

My hope is that you will give yourself permis-sion to enjoy your life.

Dave and I are praying that all the dark, low-lying clouds of guilt and shame will be driven out of your life. Our Father wants you to enjoy your life as you fall deeper in love with Him and walk in more and more of His goodness toward you. Thank you so much for joining us in declaring this life-changing message to the millions of people worldwide who want to be free.
