Enhancing Patient Welfare: Interprofessional Health Education Through

Simulation

Interprofessional Suctioning Module: Endotracheal Suctioning

Required Equipment:

-vacuum source-calibrated, adjustable regulator-collection bottle & connecting tubing-sterile disposable gloves-sterile suction catheter of appropriate caliber-sterile water/normal saline and sterile cup/bowl-protective equipment (goggles, mask, gown)-oxygen source with a calibrated metering device-manual resuscitation bag -stethoscope

Optional Equipment:

-ECG monitor-pulse oximeter-sterile sputum trap for culture specimen-closed suction system-oxygen insufflation device

INDICATIONS PRECAUTIONS CONTRAINDICATIONS

Increased pulmonary secretions:

• course breath sounds• reduced/absent

breath sounds• spontaneous

coughing• ineffective cough• increased peak

inspiratory pressures/decreased tidal volumes

• worsening 02 sat/ABGs

• to obtain sputum sample

• to stimulate cough reflex

• hypoxic respiratory drive

O2 saturation (> 4%)

• atelectasis• mucosal fragility• benign arrhythmia• bronchospasm• use aseptic

technique 10-12 seconds

• severe O2 saturation (< 92%)

intracranial pressure (ICP)

• haemoptysis• malignant

arrhythmia• hyperinflation post

CABG and head injury
