introduction to architectural drawing taught the importance of quality lines and lineweight, creating a hierarchyusing specific thicknesses of graphite. observing architectural features and dif-ferent machined objects allowed for the exploration of interpretingmateriality without value or color.

contour drawings, perspectivedrawings, and construction drawings are seperate ways to express specific monents, feelings, or otherimportant notes within one’s work.having the ability to construct these sep-arate types of drawings is important for any student’s ability to conveyinformation clearly.

the scale of the drawing and its location on the page are very important. creating simple diagrams help to understand the complexity of some final drawings, allowing you to position it accurately on the page.

the study above analyzed how to create a hierarchy of lineweights and hatching

to distinguish materials.

to the right is a section drawing of one of the chairs in studio. i have yet to find a chair i would rather

sit on for hours on end. i bought one for $136.

tying volumesandrea johnson adam jarvispring 2014

the purpose of this project was to create a programmatic space from the folds of a specific type of knot. my personalcollection of neckties influenced my decision of the four-in-hand instead of the more common nautical knots.

there were multiple iterations recreating the steps one takes to create this knot, from line diagrams, wire models, folded paper volumes, and 3d modeling. through the process, volumes were interpreted, and a program was created.

creating a narrative of a wealthybusinessman who donated a park pavilion to his community explained the influence of the necktie, and it also allowed me to explore the role of privilege within the built environment for the first time. although this was a small element of this project, it sparked an interest in the subject.

the pavilion was to provide a multitude of different spaces for a variety of uses.

the folds of the knot created a compelling volumewhich supported this function.

card cantileverandrea johnson adam jarvispring 2014

the goal of this project was to create a cantilever using a deck of cardswithout any type of adhesive. we hadn’t taken structures class by this pointeither, so we were armed only withwhatever knowledge we may have retained from high school physics.

i worked on the anchor of the structure while my partner focused on the actual cantilever. figuring tubes would be the most structural form a playing card could take, and creating a large enough base to fit between the railings we were to hang our cantilever from, my X-shaped design came to be.

this was the first time many of us had used adobe illustrator, so using this program to draw and diagram our process was most important. using many of the tools learned from hand drawing, lineweight and clarity, allowed me to create these drawings.

i was tasked with creating a strong, stable base using only nine playing cards. the majority of the deck was needed to create the cantilever itself.

we were given a museum collection that the university of minnesota owns to create a new facility for its display. i was given the goldstein museum of art’s basket collection, currently located on the st. paul campus.

using the prominent vertical andhorizontal patterns withinbasket weaving, the museum took shape. wanting to relate to the collection of materials when creating these baskets, i explored the use of glulams and the appropriateness of glass within the minnesota environment. using these ideas i recreated a wooded forest.

using a three-dimensional grid of “trees” i was able to relate to the individual’s experience of findingmaterials to create the baskets as well as the basket’s structuralcomposition. this allowed the visitor to experience this process for themselves.

construction while also creating intimate views.

the mood of the space was to replicate searching for materials needed to

construct the baskets.
