How to do it

Add 1 litre and a half of used olive oil.

Add ¾ of a litre of water

Add 300 grams of caustic soda

Add a handful of salt

Mix it,

Be careful, it burns! with a mixer it is easier.

Spread it into yoghurt cups or any other container, wait 15 days and:

Can use it for clothes and for your skin. Because it hasn't got perfume, it doesn´t cause allergic reactions.

READING AND WRITING ACTIVITIES:

First version It´s important to properly separate the lines.

Look for information about allergies ( at home, with a families help, bring it into the class and inform the others.

Write a report.

A questionnaire about allergies : we invited a doctor to the class( having given him the questions previously).

A rhyming advertisement to accompany the present.

MATH ACTIVITIES

Ask the children the difference between 1 litre and a half a litre.

They arrived at the conclusion “ if you make a line at 5, you´ll take half.

These included 5 inside the glass, and 1 outside: they had the intuition that “this five is included in one”.

How to know how much is a 3/4?

They tried to divide in 20, this time.

They don´t write the numbers very well, from 15.

This was difficult and I gave them a clue:half is ½, and three quarters is ¾.

Not everybody arrived at the correct answer: but it doesn´t matter, they were thinking and came to their own conclusion. Sometimes near and sometimes far from the actual answer.

About kilos and grams: every body thought a kilo was more than a gram.

But, for some of them it was difficult to admit that 1 kilo 300grs. is less than 27 kilos:

“ 27 kilos is less than 1 kilo 300 grs.”

Why do you use litre for oil and grams for salt or caustic soda?

“ because oil is liquid and the caustic soda is like the salt like hard chicken.”

Difference between kilo and litre

Capacity/weight: we weighed a glass of water and the same glass of oil

The proof: we put oil and water together and observed how the oil was laying on top of the water.
