AIS is New Zealand’s most international private tertiary

institute, with students from over 30 different countries.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMMES

This is a full-time, 12 week course designed specifically as a primer to EAP II. It aims to introduce concepts necessary for success in internally assessed programmes. It includes an introduction to academic-style listening, speaking, writing, research, presentations and, in the Skills portion it concentrates largely on the reading ability necessary to produce research assignments and presentations.

Students are assessed weekly and progress is closely monitored and discussed.

Students who are Pre-Intermediate and above, (IELTS 4.5/TEP40) are eligible to enter this course. After completion of EAP I students can reasonably expect to have raised their proficiency thus allowing them to enter EAP II at a higher level.

A very high level of commitment is required for this course.

This is a full-time, 12 week pathway course designed to help students to achieve success in their tertiary studies. It is ideal for Intermediate to Advanced level (IELTS 5.0/TEP44) students. The course is an excellent preparation for further AIS courses at tertiary level. It would also suit academically minded students who wish to be challenged in class. The course is built around research skills and is designed to foster independent learning. It is ideally preceded by EAP I. Successful students may enter their chosen AIS tertiary course, such as MBA, PGDBA or BIB, with no further test of English required.

A very high level of commitment is required for this course.

This is a full-time 6 or 12 week programme for students who have achieved an Intermediate level of English language proficiency on the IELTS placement test. Entry to the IELTS programme is based on an entry test and is at the discretion of the IELTS Coordinator. Class size is limited to a maximum of 14 students.

The course is divided into two modules, General and Skills, with 25 hours of class time per week. During the General sessions students will be trained in interpreting and answering IELTS question types. The Skills sessions are topic-based covering the topic areas most often found in IELTS examinations such as health, social issues, technology, education and the environment.

The General English classes at AIS help you improve your English proficiency step by step, using topic-based, modern textbooks and an interactive classroom approach.

Building on the skills learned in the General English class, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on real day-to-day English with topic-based learning and weekly vocabulary and speaking assessments.

LAURA CASADIOENGLISH LANGUAGE

Laura recently completed Upper Intermediate level English, and is looking forward to completing IELTS studies so she can become a fully registered New Zealand teacher. She has a master’s degree in preschool teaching from a university in Italy, so is looking forward to further advancing her career here in New Zealand.

Laura chose AIS because it enabled her to study English with the visa she had, while looking for work. She is now a preschool teacher at an early childcare centre, and credits her English Language studies at AIS as the main reason she was able to find employment.

“My grammar and speaking really improved during my time at AIS. There is an individual focus for each student and I received a lot of support. The class sizes were small so this helped a lot in getting attention from the teacher. My English teacher even checked my CV before I applied for my job and acted as my referee. My dream when I was in Italy is now being realised.”

As you might expect from a teacher, when asked how she feels about her studies at AIS, Laura gives it a grade out of 10 – a perfect 10!

ELC ACTIVITIES

The English Language Centre at AIS has the following options for groups:

• English plus tourism

• TESOL teacher training and refresher courses

• English plus golf

• Business English

• High school groups

Customised group options can also be arranged, along with homestay placement or dormitory accommodation.

English language students not only get the benefit of top quality classes and teachers, they can also take advantage of the extra activities and outings after class every day. An English Language Centre activities calendar is issued every month so that students can plan in advance which outings they want to join. Tennis coaching, test practice, farm visits and local community conversation are just some of the types of activities on offer.

Students also have the option of taking part in outings to nearby destinations to experience the natural beauty of New Zealand, from the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower to its wild west coast beaches.

The daily activities programme is very popular with students as it gives them the chance to speak English while making friends and having fun.
