The Young King [from The Arthurian Legend (for Kids)] (2) Young King Arthur was faced with many problems right from the beginning. Mostly, though, he needed to fight against the Saxons, who had invaded Britain before he was born, and were constantly trying to get new land. He had to make the many petty kings and lords fight together with him instead of against each other. To solve this pro-blem, he was given the great Round Table, where all the men in his service could sit together without thinking that anyone was more important than anyone else. A round table has no head, so no one could be said to be sitting at the head of the table. The man who gave King Arthur the Round Table also gave him a wife. King Leodegrance promised King Arthur his daugh-ter Guinevere to be his queen. They were married during a big celebration. After his wedding, King Arthur went on a long campaign to subdue the Saxons. He fought twelve great battles, the last one called the Battle of Badon, in which he beat the Saxons so badly that they did not make a peep for twenty years. Also during this time, Arthur was given another sword by the Lady of the Lake, called Excalibur. A time of peace settled on the land. !Grammar questions!Find one example of Past Continuous in the text. BETH GELLERT Prince Llewelyn had a favourite greyhound named Gellert that had been given to him by his father-in-law, King John. He was as gentle as a lamb at home but a lion in the chase. One day Llewelyn went to the chase and blew his horn in front of his castle. All his other dogs came to the call but Gellert never answered it. So he blew louder on his horn and called Ge-llert by name, but still the greyhound did not come. At last Prince Llewelyn could wait no longer and went off to the hunt without Gellert. He had little fun that day because Gellert was not there. He came back furious to his castle, and as he came to the gate, he saw Gellert come to meet him. But when the hound came near him, the Prince saw that his lips and fangs were dripping with blood. Llewelyn started back and the greyhound was surprised and afraid at the way his master greeted him.

ENGLISH FOR FREE - 1st BAT - UNIT 2 - STORYTELLING

Now Prince Llewelyn had a little son a year old with whom Gellert used to play, and a terrible thought crossed the Prince's mind that made him go to the child's room. And the nearer he came the more blood and disorder he found about the rooms. He found the child's cradle overturned and full of blood. Prince Llewelyn grew more and more terrified, and looked for his little son everywhere. He could find him nowhere but only signs of some terrible conflict in which much blood had been shed. At last he felt sure the dog had destroyed his child, and shouting to Gellert, "Monster, you have devoured my child," he took his sword and killed the greyhound, who fell with a deep shout and still looking at his master's eyes. As Gellert shouted, a little child's cry answered it from beneath the cradle, and there Llewelyn found his child unharmed and just awakened from sleep. But just beside him was the body of a great wolf covered with blood. Too late, Llewelyn learned what had happened while he was away. Gellert had stayed behind to guard the child and had fought and killed the wolf that had tried to destroy Llewelyn's son. In vain was all Llewelyn's grief; he could not bring his faithful dog to life again. So he buried him outside the castle walls within sight of the great mountain of Snowdon, where everyone could see his grave, and raised over it a great pile of sto-nes. And to this day the place is called Beth Gellert, or the Grave of Gellert. !Answer these questions using your own words.!How did Prince Llewelyn feel when he came back from hunting?!__________________________________________________________________________________________!Why didn’t Gellert go hunting with Prince Llewelyn?!__________________________________________________________________________________________!Are these sentences true or false? The estimated population of Europe grew from 35 to 80 million between 1000 and 1347, although the exact causes remain unclear: improved agricultural techniques, the decline of sla-very, a more clement climate and the lack of invasion have all been suggested. As much as 90 per cent of the European population remained rural peasants. Many were no longer settled in isolated farms but had gathered into small communi-ties, usually known as manors or villages. Other sections of society included the nobility, clergy, and townsmen. Nobles, both the titled nobility and simple knights, exploited the manors and the peasants, although they did not own lands directly but were given rights to the income from a manor or other lands by an overlord through the system of feudalism. Women in the Middle Ages were officially required to be subordinate to some male, whether their father, husband, or ot-her male relative. Widows, who were often allowed much control over their own lives, were still restricted legally. Wo-men's work generally consisted of household or other domestically inclined tasks. !Define the following terms:!slave _________________________________________________________________________________________!peasant _______________________________________________________________________________________!clergy _________________________________________________________________________________________!income ________________________________________________________________________________________!!PAU EXAMS!Open questions! Here you have the open questions for Option A in the English exam for PAU June 2010.  HOW FIVE YEARS OF YOUTUBE TURNS A NOBODY INTO A STAR Five years after Karim and two fellow PayPal employees founded their video-sharing website YouTube, it hosts more than 120 million videos. The site is a phenomenon that’s generated a whole culture of YouTube celebrities. Never before had anyone with a video camera been able to reach a potential audience of millions and for many they did so by accident. But when the site started including advertisements related to the user’s search, some people were able to make money out of their hobbies. The science behind what makes a video a hit remains vague. It’s easier to bathe cats than to predict whether the public will like or dislike something. It’s an illuminating choice of elements: cats are, of course, a pretty good bet. Also babies, though it’s still surprising that a merely moderately amusing family moment is the most watched YouTube video of all time: “Charlie bit my finger”, a clip in which Charlie, aged one, bites the finger of his big brother Harry. With its ability to grant an audience of millions to any clip the site has extraordinary democratic potential. Last year, a clip of Neda Agha-Soltan being shot in the chest in Iran was put on YouTube instantly and became a powerful tool in the pro-test movement against the Iranian government. The site’s democratic character had already taken on new, practical uses with the so-called “YouTube election” of 2008, when what many had dismissed as simply a site for teenagers became a battleground for one of the most interesting presi-dential fights in history.
