Book Title: Julie of the Wolves

    Author: Jean Craighead George

    Publisher: Harper & Row

    By: DK 7C

This collage is made to express and explain the settings ofJulie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead

George published by Harper & Row.

How do the pictures chosen explain the setting of the novel?

Firstly, I chose a photo of oil barrels in Alaska. This

picture represents the geographical and historical

setting of the story.Julie of the Wolves takes place

entirely in Alaska in the late twentieth century. In

fact, author does not tell exact time period of this

story. However, oil barrels on the field Julie sees

indicate the historical setting of this story is the

late twentieth century because oil production in

    Alaska started in 1967.

Secondly, a picture of Alaskan tundra shows the

physical setting of the story. This is because most

of the action of the story takes place on theAlaskan open tundra. Julie gets lost on the tundra

running away from Daniel who attempts to hurt

her. She uses fathers teachings to survive in her

Arctic surroundings. For example, she creates

shelters for herself and gets food by

communicating with the wolves she encounters on

    the tundra.

Next, a love symbol image is related to the

emotional setting of the story. Julie loves the wolves

not only because they provide her with food but

because they protect her from danger on the tundra.

At the same time, she also tries to protect them

from the harmful hunters. She develops a very

unusual love relationship with them. For instance,

she even builds a totem when Amaroq, alpha male,

    dies.

Then, the picture of odd one out expresses the

emotional setting for this story, too. It is because

Julie is a human and the others are all wolves with

her. Thus, she must feel lonely. She has no one to

talk to or play delighting games with. This is why

odd one out picture shows her lonesome life in a

    pack of wolves.

In addition, I decided to choose this photo of smiling

face that represents the emotional setting of the

story. This is because when Julie is accepted to join

the wolf pack, she is so happy and excited to see thepups grow and discover new facts from them.

Especially, when she help Kapu, one of the pups,

heal from his injury, she is happy and satisfied with

    her work.

T o conclude,Julie of the Wolves takes place in the Alaskan tundra in the late twentieth century. The

emotional setting of this story is love. Especially, love between the wolves and Julie is impressive.

She learns their gestures and mimics them to be accepted from a pack of wolves. They protect each

other from dangers and shares what they have. This great adventurous story also gives me many

lessons such as love, courage, and challenge.

Finally, atmospheric setting of this story is

represented by this adventurous cats picture.

Julie This story tells about the thrilling

adventures of Julie. A thirteen year old girl isnever afraid of harsh situation. Instead, like a

cat with many dogs, she courageously goes

through hardships to survive on the

    unforgiving Arctic tundra using Eskimo

knowledge: When fear seizes, change what

you are doing. You are doing something

    wrong.
