Clause is called the basic unit of

English Grammar.

Read the following sentences:

=>They often go to Italy because they love the food.

=> We know that Haji Mohammad Mohsin was a very kind man.

Look! Both the sentences have a connective word or conjunction. Now,

find the conjunctions that join two parts of the sentences.

A Clause means -a group of words that

includes a subject and a verb, and forms a sentence or part of a sentence.

Again, a clause is a

subject and a predicate working together.

Now, let’s see What a clause means….

Example sentence-1

In the above sentence, there is one subject, ‘I’, and one predicate, ‘took’. Since they are working together to form a comprehensible sentence, this sentence has one clause.

I took the dog to the park.

When there are two clauses-

The clause that is dependent on another clause to make a complete sense is called a Subordinate or Dependent Clause.

The Principal Clause can make a complete sense by itself. It does not have to depend on any other clause.

Example sentence -2

The sentence contains two clauses (i) We know, (ii) that Haji Mohammad Mohsin was a very kind man. Of these two, the first one stands by itself, but the latter depends on the other clause.

We know that Haji Mohammad Mohsin was a

very kind man.

1. I know where he is.2. The pen that father gave me is lost.3. He cannot do this unless you help him.4. Listen to what your teachers say.5. When you have finished you lessons, you can play

games.6. As he was kind, he used to help the poor people.7. He woke up because he heard a sound in his room.

called a Co-ordinate clause.

The man is poor but he is honest.The man worked very hard and grew
