QUESTION

Identify two significant differences

between the conflicts in New England

and Virginia. How did the population

and past events of each colony lead to

the violence that occurred?

CIVIL WAR AND REVOLUTION IN ENGLAND

By the late 1600’s most puritans where in the parliament.

King Charles dismissed the parliament and didn’t convene

it again for 11 years. He called it back again to session in

1640, but was overwhelming the puritans an passed laws

that favored them and limited their royal authority.

In 1642, England was in civil war and the parliament

defeated the king who was executed in 1649.

King Charles the 2nd came to power and expanded the North American Colonies of the Future United States such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North and South Carolina.

REBELLION IN NEW ENGLAND- KING PHILIP'S

WAR, 1675-1676In half the century the Pilgrims of Plymouth lived in

harmony but between the years 1620 and 1675 there were

some tensions.

The governor Bradford got news that their close Indian ally

Massasoit was very ill, he immediately sent Edward Winslow

to treat the Wampanoag leader as a gesture of goodwill.

while the recovering, news was heard that the

Massachusetts indians were planning to attack Plymouth.

• -Under the Miles Standish, the Pilgrim soldiers killed 2 Indian tribe leaders.

• -The Massachusetts bay puritans traded with the Indian tribes especially the Pequots of the Connecticut River Valley but then the Captain of trading vessle was killed in 1637 and the puritans responded harsh by attacking the Pequot fortes on the Mystic River and attacked anyone who fled.

• - This was called the Pequot War. • By the 1660’s the English Settlements were

heading to every direction and were beginning to dominate.

• A new generation of pilgrims and Wampanoag's were coming to power.

• In 1657, Governor Bradford who led Plymouth for about 37 years died.

• Metacom who was the new leader was preparing for war.

• He denied any role in his death and asked fir the authorities to allow the Wampanoag's to settle what he saw as an internal matter but instead the Plymouth authorities hanged 3 of Metacom’s associates.

• This was known as King Philip’s war witch took place 2 weeks after the executions in June 1675

BACON’S REBELLION IN VIRGINIA

Bacons Rebellion illustrated the the instability of early

colonial life and alliances that were constantly shifting.

Bacons rebellion in Virginia was led by recent immigrants

from England in witch the militia attacked the Indian

villages and the royal governor before being defeated.

In 1660, Virginia had 40,000 colonist , including the poor

workers like the African American, (some slave, some

free)and current or former indentured servants.

WHAT ARE THE TWO MAIN DIFFERENCES?

The two main differences between the between the

conflict in New England and the conflicts in Virginia

is that in New England was a self- governed colony

and this gave people the chance to have their own

government. New England had many problems with

the Indians around the and were always in conflict.

HOW DID THE POPULATION AND PAST EVENTS OF EACH COLONY LEAD TO THE VIOLENCE THAT OCCURRED?

The population and the past events of each colony lead to the violence that occurred because of the way the the leaders ruled and also all the conflicts that the colonist would have with the Indian tribes.
