VERNIER SCALES:

1 A forward reading vernier scale gives the following details 1 msd = 40 cm. 1 vsd = 25 cm RF = 1 : 100. The scale is to be able to read upto 10 metres. Constructand mark on the scale a distance of 7.85 m and 8.15 m.(R09civil june2010set1)

Page 3: Engineering Drawing Assignment1

2 The total length of a forward reading vernier scale is 10 cm. This is divided into25 equal parts and each part represents 20 cm. Construct the scale to have 1 vsd =19 cm and mark on it a distance of 3.57 meters. What is the RF of the scale?.(R09civil june2010set2)

3 In a vernier scale the difference between 1 vsd and 1 msd was found to be 1 cm.RF = 1 : 100. The scale is able to measure a distance of 9 metres. Construct thescale and measure a distance of 3.09 m. (R09civil june2010set3)

4 The LC of a forward reading vernier is 1 cm. It is to be long enough to measure 12 metres. Construct the scale if 1 cm on this scale reads 0.6 metres and mark 647 metres and 601 metres on it.(R09civil june2010set4)

5 Construct a forward reading Vernier scale to read distance correct to a decameter on a map in which the actual distances are reduced in the ratio of 1 : 40000. The scale should be long enough to measure upto 6 km. Mark on the scale lengths of 3.34 km and 0.59 km. (R09mech june2010set1)

6 Draw a Vernier scale of 1:72 to read inches and long enough to measure 12yards. Show the following distances on it: (i) 1 yard 1 foot and 1 inch, (ii) 7 yards 2 feet and 9 inches, and (iii) 10 yards 10 inches.

7 Draw a Vernier scale of RF =1/5 to read decimeters, centimeters and millimeters, and to measure up to 6 decimeters. Show the lengths of 5.73 dm, 2.99 dm and 0.49 dm on it.

Problems for Self-Practice:- Vernier Scales :

8 Construct a Vernier scale of RF=1/500 to show decameters, metres and decimeters, and to measure up to 4 decametres. Show the lengths of 0.0393 km and 0.0001 km on it.

9 Draw a Vernier scale of RF = 1/24 to read yards, feet and inches, and to measure up to 4 yards. Show on it lengths representing (i) 2 yards 2 feet 10 inches (ii) 1 foot 3 inches.

10 Draw a vernier of R.F. = 1:2.4 to show decimeters, centimeters and millimeters and long enough to read up to 6 decimeters. Mark a distance of 3.69 decimeters on the scale.

11 Draw a vernier scale of R.F. = 2 to show centimeters, 1th/10 of centimeters and 1th / 100 of centimeter to read up to 9 cm. mark on the scale the length of 7.02 cm and 2.29 cm.

12 An area of the land of 36 sq.km in area is represented by an area of 144 sq.cm on a map. Find R.F. of the scale of this map. Draw a backward vernier scale to show kilometers, hectameters and

Page 4: Engineering Drawing Assignment1

decameters with the above R.F. indicate on the scale a distance of 9 kilometers, 5 hectameters and 6 decameters.

COMPARATIVE SCALES:1 Calculate the RF of a scale which measures 2.5 inches to a mile. Draw acomparative scale of kilometers to read up to 10 km. 1 mile=1.61 km.

2 Draw comparative scales of RF = 1/485000 to read up to 80 km and 80 versts.1 verst =1.067 km.

3 Construct a plain scale to compute time in minutes and distance covered by a train in km., when the train passes between two stations 240 km apart in four hours. The scale should have R.F. 1/400000. Show the distance covered in 45 minutes on the scale. (ECE june2010set3)

4 The distance between Vadodara and Surat is 130 km. A train covers this distance in 2.5 hours. Construct a plain scale to measure time up to a single minute. The distance covered by the train in 45 minutes.

5 The distance between Delhi and Saharanpur is 180km. The passenger train covers this distance in 6 hours. Construct a plain scale to measure time up to a single minute. The R.F. of the sale is 1;2,00,000. Indicate the distance covered by the train in 36 minutes.

6 A Car is running at a speed of 50 km/hour. Construct a diagonal scale to show 1 km by 3 cm and to measure upto 6 km. Mark also on the scale the distance covered by the car in 5 minutes 28 seconds.

SCALE OF CHORDS:

1 An isosceles triangle ABC is lying on the edge BC on the ground and the plane of the triangle is perpendicular to the ground. AC=BC=90mm, AB = 68 mm. If the length CB represents 900 on a scale of chords, construct the full scale representing all angles from 0 to 900 at an interval of 100. Using this, set off an angle of 1300. (R09mech june2010set4)

2 Construct 25° and 55° angles by using scale of chords. (RO9CSE2010SET1)

3 Draw a Triangle having sides 8 cm, 9 cm and 10 cm long respectively and measure it angles with the aid of scale of chords.

8). A Point P is 20 mm below HP and lies in the Third Quadrant. Its shortest distance from XY is 40 mm. Draw its projections.

9).A Point 30 mm above XY line is the plan-view of two points P and Q. The elevation of P is 45 mm above HP. While that of the point Q is 35 mm below the HP. Draw the projections of the points and state their position with reference to the principal planes and the quadrant in which they lie.
