Aero Mania Contest 2014

Description: This year again we’re going for a fast & Furious event – airplanes blazing across the atmosphere. Flying clubs and professionals will be competing against one another to be the best & fastest .There will be airplane maneuvers, aerobatics to mesmerize the audience/spectators – adding flying colors to the atmosphere. The competition will provide a real aircraft design experience to engineering students. This will be made possible by giving them the opportunity to validate their analytical studies and put their practical skill to test. It is a huge opportunity for aeronautical designers to come forward and fulfil their passion. It will be having two categories:

1. Students Level 2. Professional/Hobbyist Level

Major activities that can be incorporated in the event are: 1. Gymkhana Events 2. Heli-Free Style 3. Air Show

Student Level: The objective of the contest is to design and fly the most efficient aircraft. These days the focus of all science and engineering research is towards “efficiency”, especially in the aerospace and automotive industry. The Boeing’s company year of research encouraged new techniques and materials to be used and experimented which resulted in the world’s most efficient airliner, the Boeing 787. Engineering students must apply their engineering skills and knowledge to actually implement their school learned skills in real life. The contest will provide engineering student to apply their knowledge in the real world to produce a fuel efficient aircraft. The team with the most efficient aircraft based on endurance will win the competition.

RULES AND REGULATIONS: 1. The Aircraft may be powered by Glow Engine or an Electric Motor. Rocket Propulsion systems

are not allowed. 2. The aircraft must be a “winged” aircraft. Helicopters, Rotorcrafts, Quad-Copters etc. are not

eligible. 3. For Engine Powered Aircrafts, the maximum fuel that can be used is 6 OZ and the all aircrafts

must use an engine in the range of .40 cubic inches to .46 cubic inches (40 – 46 size Engine). Engines smaller or larger than this size will be disqualified.

4. For Electric Aircrafts, the aircrafts must use a 3S LIPO Battery (Lithium Polymer). The current capacity of the battery should be 2100 mAh with DIN connector. Standard Fully Charged Battery Packs with DIN connector will be provided to contestants for use in the actual competition.

5. Teams must present a design report of the aircraft and present the project to the judges in the

presentation round. 6. All members of the team must be full time students of the same university. Only the Pilot can be

a non-student / hired personnel. It is preferred to have an experienced pilot, fly the aircraft for safety reasons.

7. Teams must test fly their aircraft one day before the event. 8. All Contestants will be required to impound their Radio Transmitters, when they are not flying. 9. All aircrafts must fly off the run way without any assistance. Hand Launching is allowed with a 10

second penalty.

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA: The aircraft must take-off from the runway, fly in the air and land on the runway. The aircraft with the most time spent in air will win the challenge.

Judging will be carried out as follows:

1. Design Report and Presentation: 100 Points 2. Weight of the Aircraft (Dry Weight): 100 Points 3. Time (In Seconds) spent in air As Per Actual Time

Design Report and Presentation Teams will be required to submit a brief (not more than 30 pages) of design report, clearly explaining the design process, team member assignments, dimensions & measurements, specifications and overall features of the aircraft. Each report’s title must clearly indicate the team members and the university. Score will be marked on the average score awarded by the judges.

Weight of the Aircraft (Dry Weight) Dry Weight of the aircraft is the weight of the fully assembled aircraft in flying condition without fuelling. In case of electric aircrafts, the weight of battery is included in the dry weight. In case the plane is carrying a liquid like water to fight the fire, the weight of water will be excluded; however the weight of the mechanism / cylinder etc. will be included. The maximum points are hundred. The weight of the aircraft (in Kgs) multiplied by 4 will be subtracted from the 100 points.

E.g. The weight of the aircraft = 7 kg Points = 100 – (7 X 4) = 72 Points

Airborne Time: Time will start as soon as the aircraft loses contact with the ground. Time will stop as soon as aircraft touches the ground. No restarts are allowed. Once the plane touches the ground, the stop watch will

stop to announce the time. Each team will fly two rounds. The average of the two rounds will be calculated as the final score. The aircraft MUST land on the runway or as close to the runway as possible.

If the aircraft lands away from the marked circle on the runway, the distance will be calculated in meters and subtracted from the air time as shown below. The plane must come to a stop within the circle, if no points are to be deducted.

E.g.: If the Plane Spends 480 seconds in the air and lands 5 meters away from the spot, the final score will be: 480 – 5 = 475.

Professional/Hobbyist Level

Gymkhana Events (Electric, Glow & Gas)

1. Limbo

Do as many Limbos as possible within 3 minutes. Time Starts with First Limbo. Plane passes through a limbo obstacle with two pylons and a paper ribbon at the top of the Limbo. Restart is allowed, restart time is included in the allocated 3 minutes.

2. Touch and Go

Do as many “Touch & Go” as possible within 3 minutes. Time Starts with First Touch. Plane must touch with the circle drawn on the ground. Restart is allowed, restart time is included in the allocated 3 minutes.

3. Triple Loops & Rolls

Take-off, do 3 rolls and 3 loops then land. Best time wins. Loops and rolls can be in any order. No restart is allowed.

4. Spot Landing

Land as precise as possible within the three circles marked on the runway. Landing in the middle circle = 50 Points, First Circle = 30 Points, Third Circle = 15 Points. Outside = Zero Points.

5. Timed flight

Without outside help or a timer on the radio, take off and fly around. After a period of 1 minute come in to land. The closest time to wheels touchdown (without going over) is the winner. No restart is allowed.

Heli-Free Style In this round Helicopter flyers will show their skills of heli flying in terms of control and synchronization. This is not limited to any rules, participants have to show their skill, they can fly the want they want to fly, but remaining in the safety limits.

Format of this round is as follows:

i. Technical Skill ii. Flight Flow

Technical Skill

In this part of the competition judges will be looking for definable moves that participants can fly. This will range from rolls and flips to advanced moves depending on skill level, plus moves that participants may have invented themselves.

Flight Flow

The judgment will be based focus on how much the crowd is entertained. The Judges will also be looking for the general flow of the flight and how planned it looks. Participants can synchronize their moves with any music track of their own choice to make it more entertaining.

Air Show

In this event, the fliers are free to demonstrate their flying skills in any way they want. Flight should not be longer than 10 minutes. Pilots are encouraged to display a ‘routine’ with a wide variety of their favorite maneuvers. Pilots may demonstrate their flight skills over a musical medley. Also the participants are encouraged to synchronize their flights with each other and make the show more entertaining by formation flight. This round is not the part of competition.
