Energy Saving Tips for the Fall & Winter The following tips will save you energy and help your budget as the weather cools down. i Cut annual heating bills by as much as 10 percent a year by turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 percent for eight hours a day. i Reducing air leaks could cut 10 percent from an average household’s monthly energy bill. The most common places where air escapes homes are: floors, walls, ceilings, ducts, fireplaces, plumbing penetrations, doors, windows, fans, vents and electrical outlets. i Keep shades and curtains open during the day on the south side of your home to allow solar heating. Close them at night to retain heat. i Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees to save money on your energy bill. If you have children in the house, this is also a safety measure. Energy Saving Tips for the Fall & WinterThe following tips will save you energy and help your budget as the weather cools down.

Budget Billing

Ideal for residential heating customers, Budget Billing allows you to spread your energy costs over a period of time and pay a more consistent amount month-to-month.

More information about Budget Billing is available online at www.wmeco.com. While at the site, you can also view the calculated Budget Billing amount for your account and enroll in the program.

More Assistance

t Payment Arrangements allow customers to spread out the overdue portions of their bill for up to four months. By visiting www.wmeco.com you can setup a payment arrangement quickly and easily.

t WMECO’s Discount Rate is available for residential customers who receive certain government means-tested benefits. Eligibility guidelines and an application are available on www.wmeco.com.

t Fuel Assistance might also be available for residential customers who meet income eligibility guidelines. Contact a Community Action Program near you for more information, or visit www.masssave.com.

t NUStart is also available for residential customers who may be experiencing difficulty paying their bill. If you receive certain means-tested government benefits, and meet other criteria, you may be eligible to have portions of your bill’s overdue balance forgiven. t Additional assistance may also be available through The Good Neighbor Energy Fund, local funds, city or town halls, churches and other charitable organizations. Visit www.magoodneighbor.org for more information about The Good Neighbor Energy Fund.
