2008-2009 ENERGY CONSERVATION CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES The Challenge Submit an implementable plan to reduce student energy consumption on campus as well as promoting awareness about smarter eco- friendly practices. Students must demonstrate how energy can be conserved by creating innovative solutions to common energy expenditures through a written proposal plan or video presentation. Eligibility The competition is open to all undergraduate students of any disciplinary in New Brunswick-Piscataway campus. Multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional teams are strongly encouraged. Teams and individuals may compete. Teams must be comprised of no more than five individuals. Teams are encouraged to secure a faculty member or University Staff Professional to fill an advisory role. Only one entry per team will be accepted. Registration Teams are required to register for the competition through the REI website by completing an online registration form no later than February 1, 2009 that will be available at http://rei.rutgers.edu ; only one form per team/proposal is necessary. All information must be complete to be considered a valid entry. Registration is mandatory to receive additional instruction and information on project submittals. Teams are required to identify a primary contact. This person will receive important information from the competition committee and is responsible for the final submission. The team contact will be responsible for all communication between the design team and the competition committee. Additionally, the team contact should disseminate all information from the competition organizers to their entire team. Proposals may be developed by individuals or by groups of individuals in teams. Advice from the faculty is permitted, but the plans must be conceived and written by students or student teams. The plan is to be submitted with the cover page, available for download at http://rei.rutgers.edu; the cover page does not count towards the page limit.

Video Entry Guidelines Student must put together a 3-5 minute video intended to raise awareness among the Rutgers community on how to be smarter about energy consumption. The video can target the student body, faculty, staff, visitors, or a mixed audience.  The video can be staged as a short play, commercial, news broadcast, talk show, music video, documentary, animation, etc. The video clip must include the following:

         Reflect/address the overall community impact of the plan         Incorporate information on some of the green initiatives that Rutgers University is

currently doing.

         Be accompanied by a typed up transcript of the any dialog or spoken word in the video.

The video entry must be submitted on a CD or a DVD in a file format that can be easily viewed with Windows Media Player or with QuickTime Player. The transcript of the video and the cover page ( available for download at http://rei.rutgers.edu) should be submitted by email. Please see the Submission and Contest Deadline section below for instructions.

Submission and Contest Deadline Completed projects should be submitted by March 13, 2009. Individual and team proposal entries and cover pages should be emailed to

[email protected] no later than 11:59pm on March 13, 2009. The video clip must be submitted separate from the emailed information, on a CD or a DVD

mailed to: Yana Zeltser, REI, IMCS, 71 Dudley Road, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (Cook campus, if sending via campus mail). The submission must arrive no later than March 13, 2009.
