Chemring designs and manufactures a range of highly effective safety systems used in emergency situations including crew egress. These products are supported by our safety testing equipment, including communications and oxygen supply testing.

Aircrew Egress Chemring supplies complementary products for ejection seat deployment systems, including rocket propellant, canopy cords, time delay and actuation devices. High reliability and high performance within the egress sequence is essential. Chemring is the exclusive supplier to Martin Baker, the world’s leading manufacturer of ejection seats. Martin Baker ejection seats, using Chemring components, are fitted to a wide variety of aircraft including the F-35, Typhoon, Rafale, Hawk and Tornado.

Additionally, Chemring Energetics is the leading manufactural of CAD/PAD components used on the ACES II seat utilized in the F-16, F-15, A-10, B-1B, B-2, and F-22. A few examples of the type of components supplied for these platforms are:

• Time Delay Devices• Ejection Seat Mortar Cartridges• Drogue Gun Cartridge• Harness Release Cartridge• Harness Release Cutter• Gyro Pin Up Cartridge

Canopy RemovalCanopy cutting cords are used in a variety of military aircraft to assist in canopy break-up and removal, allowing safe escape during the emergency ejection process. Chemring actuators and thrusters are also used in canopy removal.

Analog Recovery SequencerChemring manufactures the Analog Recovery Sequencer for the Advanced Concept Ejection Seat. Our system, fitted into the seat, utilises multiple pyromechanical devices including percussion primers, dual electrical bridgewires, linear explosive lines and hot gas systems to initiate the ACES II ejection seat system.

Aircrew Flight Equipment TesterChemring designs and manufactures custom test equipment to meet customers’ specifications. An example is the Joint Combined Aircrew Systems Tester (JCAST) to meet the requirements established by the US Life Support military personnel. The JCAST integrates several required items of test equipment into a single, portable, rugged, self-contained test unit. This test equipment eliminates the need for high pressure air/oxygen cylinders, hazardous materials and significantly reduces supporting man-hours, deployment costs, and mobility footprint. The computer driven JCAST has a LCD panel display for easy to follow step-by-step inspection procedures. The JCAST provides capability for testing Man Mounted Regulators, and with a data interface, it provides flexibility and expandability through accessory modules and software upgrades.

Chemring designs and manufactures Cartridge Actuated Devices (CADs) and Propellant Actuated Devices (PADs) used for a variety of functions including crew egress and weapon systems. These products can also be used for a large variety of military and commercial functions ranging from crew egress and weapon systems to the activation of fire suppression systems in buildings and vehicles. Actions can be summarised as follows:

• Puncturing containers (e.g. to release high pressure gas)

• Pushing mechanical loads (e.g. opening valves)• Locking a device to prevent rotary or linear motion

• Releasing a device to enable rotary or linear motion• Operating a sprinkler bulb• Operating a switch or delay• Cutting wires or small bolts

Pin Pullers and Pin PushersAlso known as protractors and retractors, our Pin Pullers and Pin Pushers are controlled-release mechanisms used in applications requiring instant detachment of structural fittings, mechanisms, rods, cables, booms or parachutes. After functioning as structural devices and carrying full tensile or shear loads, these products release upon command by an attached Chemring initiator. Full retraction or protraction of the pin is achieved by pressurized gas driving against the piston pin.

METRON ActuatorsActuators are highly reliable, compact single shot devices which can push, pull, cut or shear with a power-to-weight ratio in excess of 10,000:1. They operate within milliseconds of receiving the appropriate electrical impulse, a rate which is almost impossible to achieve with a mechanical source of energy. Actuators are ideal for remote controlled applications.

Ejection Release UnitsCartridge Ejection Release Units (CERUs) provide gas pressure to operate Aircraft Ejector Release Units (EJUs), for stores ejection on combat aircraft.

Gas Generators

Gas Generators are self-contained units that can either be electrically or percussion operated. Typical operating times vary between 25 milliseconds to 250 seconds with operating temperatures in the range of -32°C to + 60°C. Specialised propellants can be incorporated to extend the temperature range from -54°C to +150°C. Typical applications include:• Fluid Displacement• Liquid Fuel Igniters• Pressurisation of hydraulic power supplies• Ejection Release Units• Buoyancy Devices • Inflation of flame retardant fabric structures

Other CAD / PADs• Igniters and Fuseheads• Detonators• Cutters• Explosive Bolts• Release / Low Shock Bolts• Separation Nuts• Detent Actuators

Power Cartridges, Squibs & InitiatorsOur power cartridges create high-heat, high-pressure combustion energy by igniting the pyrotechnic mixture inside a controlled chamber. The power cartridges (aka initiators) are hermetically sealed electro-explosive devices characterized by their compactness, lightness in weight, environment/corrosion resistance and extremely high reliability (.9999).

NASA Standard InitiatorWe have manufactured power cartridges, including the NASA Standard Initiator (NSI) for over 20 years without a single failure. We are the primary qualified source for the NASA Standard Initiator (NSI) used for all initiation functions on the Space Shuttle. The NSI, available only through NASA performs from an incredible low temperature of -420°F to a high of +300°F.

PC-23 InitiatorOur PC-23 initiator is the commercial equivalent (i.e. non-ITAR) to the NASA Standard Initiator (NSI) and is designed as a standard unit to provide high pressure energy for the initiation of energetic trains, separation devices, cutters and actuators. Programmes using the PC-23 initiator include Ariane 5, Galileo, Eurostar E3000, ExoMars and many others. Chemring Energetic Devices has produced in excess of 250,000 PC-23 Initiators to-date with 100% mission success.

Actuators & RetractorsOur space qualified pyrotechnic and pneumatic actuators produce motion quickly, accurately and reliably. A pushing, pulling or rotating motion can be supplied for the most complex systems, including inlet door opening, arming/safing, stage separation, stores release/eject, payload release, hatch/door removal or silo door opening.

Pyrotechnic Separation NutsGeneral features include lightweight, high-load capability, extremely low shock output with complete gas and particle containment. These nuts actuate on very low pressure with large bolt insertion tolerance.Chemring also supplies ultra-low shock separation nuts, using a similar design.

Non-Pyrotechnic Separation NutsWe have developed an extreme low-shock output, non-explosive separation nut. These nuts are actuated by a miniature electric motor on low energy with large bolt insertion tolerance. Unique features include 25 times resettable and reusability, and eliminates the need for disassembly.

Separation Bolts Our separation bolts are designed and manufactured for use in applications where rapid structure separation is demanded. Chemring’s Separation Bolts have been fully qualified for fairing separation on the ATLAS and DELTA launch vehicles. Bolts do not fragment; rather, they separate into two parts, one of which is ejected from the structure.

Cutters (Bolt, Rod and Cable) Chemring cutters are designed for robustness and can be used in space as well as in deep submergence applications, for cutting reefing lines, electrical cables, steel cables or aluminium, titanium and steel bolts or rods. Over the past 20 years, our cutters have demonstrated high reliability on countless earth-orbital missions. Chemring cutters are built with the option to be single blade or mechanically redundant.

Separation SystemsAs a trusted supplier of space qualified components, Chemring products are designed to operate under extreme conditions. Our Separation Systems can reliably undertake a range of mission critical functions, with guaranteed levels of performance and reliability. Such functions might include the release of structures or components such as multi-stage launch vehicles, separation of nose cones and capsules, or the release of booster rockets, tanks and other jettison equipment.

Firing CablesLow altitude firing cables that are 360° shielded for EMC/EMI protection.

Piston ActuatorsUsed to crush a fuze, in order to start an explosive train or to arm a Safe and Arm device.

Bridgewire InitiatorsLow voltage, dual hot bridgewire cartridges that initiate numerous components on a platform, including ignition of a gas generator for missile launch.

Separation NutsTo attach the aft of a missile to a shipping canister or capsule launching system and to restrain it until initiation.

Cable CuttersElectrically initiated cable cutters sever electrical cable bundles either prior to launching, or during flight.

High-pressure Pneumatic CylindersThese are used to start a sequence of control surface deployments, such as opening an inlet door to a sustainer motor.

Lug Retraction DevicesUpon actuation of a cartridge, a spring loaded spreading rod extends to retract lugs into the missile body to reduce its radar cross section.

Wing and Tail Retention MechanismsUsed to retain missile wings/tails during storage. Upon actuation, a frangible pin fails allowing missile wings/tails to rotate into a deployed orientation.

Wedge Retention MechanismsDesigned to hold aerodynamic features in place during flight. Upon initiation, features are allowed to release from the missile.

Chemring supplies a wide range of components supporting a number of critical missile, bomb and torpedo programmes across an international military customer base.

Pyromechanical ValvesChemring supplies a number of pyromechanical valves, designed to be lightweight and reliable, which are critical to the liquid and gaseous fluid systems for complex missile programmes. Valves can be either designed in a ‘normally open’ or ‘normally closed’ configuration, which ensures that valve combustion gases are fully contained. Valves are typically associated with fuel flow and are initially designed to isolate fuel during storage, by sealing it within the fuel tank. Upon actuation, these valves allow unrestricted fuel flow to the missile and in parallel, unrestricted flow of pressurized air back into the fuel tank. Our valves are also employed in missile Divert and Attitude Control (DAC) systems.

Safe & Arm Units (SAUs) and Flight Termination Our electro-mechanical safe arm devices provide dual explosive output for remote safing/arming and subsequent initiation of ordnance items. Our fully qualified products are suitable for system use and target drone applications. Chemring designed, developed and qualified the SAD-505 for the US Air Force F-4 target drone. Qualified to MIL-STD-1516, this device provides remote arm and dual initiation for ordnance products. It features remote indication status and remote or manual safing.
