I r e a l l y enjoyed the wimmins i s s u e o f MRR which j u s t came out l a s t month. My f a v o u r i t e a r t i c l e was the DC s e c t i o n i n which some o f t h e men, & a group o f wom-min were asked the same q u e s t i o n s & then l a t e r compared answers. I t r e a l l y s t r u c k me how the wimmin were q u i c k t o make c h a r a c t e r i s t i c d i s t i n c t i o n s b e t ­ween wimmin & men, & how h e s i t a n t t h e men were t o admit any d i f f e r e n c e s a t a l l . I t seems as though t h e men were put i n a t r a p - t h e y knew t h e i r answers c o u l d be judged as " t y p i c a l " or " a - t y p -i c a l " male by a l l the " l i b e r a t e d - f e m i n -

i s t wimmin" r e a d i n g t h e i s s u e & so i t seemed t h a t t h e y gave th e answers they t h o u g h t t h e wimmin would want t o hear.

I r e a l i s e d how easy i t i s f o r wimmin t o c a l l men s e x i s t & f o r a man s t r i v i n g t o r i d h i m s e l f & o t h e r s o f sexism t h i s can be v e r y d i s c o u r a g i n g . I a l s o r e a l ­i s e d how hard i t i s f o r a man t o c a l l a wimmin s e x i s t w i t h o u t b e i n g accused o f "not u n d e r s t a n d i n g wimmin", p u t t i n g down one o f s o c i e t y s ' " v i c t i m s " , or ev­en b e i n g c a l l e d s e x i s t back. Why i s t h e r e t h i s double-standard? I s n ' t t h a t s e x i s t i n i t s e l f ?

I'm not s a y i n g t h a t a l o t o f men, even i n " p o l i t i c a l l y c o r r e c t " c i r c l e s a r e n ' t s e x i s t , most a r e , I'm j u s t s a y i n g t h a t most wimmin are t o o , & we need t o recog­n i s e t h i s & work on both sexes g e t t i n g out o f s o c i e t y s t r a d i t i o n a l r o l e s & cha­r a c t e r i s t i c s . We a l s o need t o encour­age each o t h e r i n our d i f f e r e n t steps & not j u s t c r i t i s i z e f o r t h e steps n o t y e t t a k e n .

Toronto A n a r c h i s t Gathering, J u l y 1-4. "The Gathering has meant growth f o r us as a community. I t acted as a focus t o draw us t o g e t h e r & make us s t r o n g ­e r . But i t has a l s o r e v e a l e d t o us where we need t o s t r e n g t h e n the bonds & e x p l o r e our d i f f e r e n c e s . COUNTER-CULTURE? Although I myself was only i n Tor­

onto f o r about 2 weeks, i t d i d seem l i k e t h e Toronto a n a r c h i s t / a n t i - a u t h -o r i t a r i a n community had been connect­ed & made s t r o n g e r as a r e s u l t o f the Gath e r i n g , but time w i l l t e l l i f the bonds can remain.

The d i v e r s i t y o f the N. American an­a r c h i s t movement (& I suppose as a wh o l e ) , t o me, i s both i t ' s s t r e n g t h & i t s major weakness. The d i v e r s i t y ex­i s t s i n both forms o f anarchism &, t o a c e r t a i n e x t e n t , l i f e s t y l e s o f anarch­i s t s themselves. The forms o f anarch­ism, such as anarcho-syndicalism, ecol­o g i c a l a n a r c h i s t s , a n t i - t e c h n o l o g y , an-archo-communists e t c . have proved t o be a major d i v i s i o n . For example, gen­e r a l l y speaking, a n a r c h o - s y n d i c a l i s t s see a s o c i e t y based much more on an i n d u s t r i a l w o r k e r - c o n t r o l l e d s i t u a t i o n w h i l e e c o l o g i s t s & a n t i - t e c h n o l o g i s t s see t h i s as moreof a danger t o e a r t h & i n d i v i d u a l freedom. Th i s i s very gen­e r a l & s i m p l i s t i c but I t h i n k i t p o i n t out some major d i f f e r e n c e i n a n a r c h i s t t h e o r y & approach.

So a t the Gathering i t was indeed i n ­t e r e s t i n g t o see 800 a n a r c h i s t s co-op­e r a t i n g & i n t e r - a c t i n g . Segments of the c o u n t e r - c u l t u r e were w e l l represen­t e d , w i t h many h i p p i e s , punks, gay ana­r c h i s t s , f e m i n i s t s (excuse a l l the l a b e l s ) , & t h i s b r i n g s us back t o l i f e ­s t y l e s . These c u l t u r a l groups are ;.i v e r y oppressed & spat upon by main­stream s o c i e t y , which i s c o n d i t i o n e d t o despise a l l non-comformity, y e t i n t h i s a n a r c h i s t community these groups are accepted, respected, & welcomed. (One t h i n g i s i m p o r t a n t l y m i s s i n g ; more r a c i a l groups; Why was almost the whole Gathering young & white? The peoples o f c o l o u r are much more the t a r g e t s o f the r a c i s t government system... ) . As I s a i d b e f o r e , t h i s d i v e r s i t y & r e s p e c t f o r d i f f e r e n t c u l t ­u r a l groups, m i n o r i t y ' s e t c . i s one of Anarchisms s t r o n g e s t p o i n t s . I say t h i s because I myself saw t h i s , f e l t t h i s , & I b e l i e v e i t was the s t r o n g e s t arguement f o r anarchism... t h a t o f i n d i v i d u a l freedom y e t a sense of r e s ­p o n s i b i l i t y t o the community.

ORGANISATION The amount o f work put i n t o the Gath­

e r i n g was s t a g g e r i n g , c o n s i d e r i n g l u n c h & d i n n e r s ( s u p p l i e d f r e e ) , accom­o d a t i o n , the 63 workshops i n 2 days, banquet on the f i r s t day, 2 g i g s on Saturday n i g h t , Networking day in.Alex­andra park, f i l m s , A n a r c h i s t p o s t e r , show, a l l organised i n a n o n - h i e r a r -c h a l way- dem o n s t r a t i n g how something on t h i s l a r g e o f a scale can be manag­ed by a n a r c h i s t s , & done v e r y w e l l !

FRI. JULY 1 s t F r i d a y morning was a ge n e r a l meeting

at the 519 Church s t . Community centre. Some T r o t s k y i s t s a t t e m p t i n g t o s e l l l i t e r a t u r e were d e a l t w i t h f a i r l y q u i c k l y a f t e r a b i t of d i s c u s s i o n , as w e l l as a few media-types. The Toron­t o A n a r c h i s t s had purposedly kept a d i s t a n c e from the media as we a l l know t h e i r "odd'.' h a b i t o f d i s t o r t i n g every­t h i n g they r e p o r t ! T h i s d i s t r u s t o f the media wasn't helped w i t h a r t i c l e s l i k e "15,000... w h i t e s u p r e m i s t s . . . neo-nazis... " t o be a t t e n d i n g . React­i o n a r y a r t i c l e s designed t o s t i m u l a t e f e a r & h a t r e d o f the A n a r c h i s t commun­i t y .

A f t e r the meeting people went o f f t o workshops or j u s t meet people. Over 63 workshops went on d u r i n g the f i r s t 2 days,on s u b j e c t s l i k e ; Anarchy i n Greece, s q u a t t i n g , ecology. N a t i o n a l l i b e r a t i o n s t r u g g l e s , anarcha-feminism technology, racism, dumpster d i v i n g , CSIS e t c . Few of the workshops were a c t u a l l e c t u r e s , most were d i s c u s s i o n s s h a r i n g o p i n i o n s or experiences.

I n t h e evening was the banquet, and the f i r s t p o l i c e h a s s l e s . 2 Americans were a r r e s t e d f o r " E n t e r i n g the count­r y under False Pretenses", meaning th e y d i d n ' t t e l l the border guards they were heading f o r t h e G a t h e r i n g , & whethbr or not they d i d was unimport­ant as the people were h e l d a l l week­end & missed the G a t h e r i n g . Counter-measures were q u i c k l y taken & no more bogus a r r e s t s were made.

SAT. JULY 2nd More workshops & I missed t h e ones I r e a l l y wanted t o see as I s l e p t i n . I n the evening was the g i g s - MDC, Scream, F a i l - s a f e , PL0, Mr. T Exper­i e n c e , & another band I can't remember. This was such an e x c e l l e n t g i g , a l l the bands were-great, & MDC played a l l t h e i r g r e a t s t u f f l i k e "John Wayne was a Nazi", "Business On Parade", "No More Cops", f u c k i n g great'. The whole g i g was f u n & had a r e a l l y c o o l atmos­phere. At another venue the Lay-About s r e p o r t e d l y played an e x c e l l e n t g i g

as w e l l & everyone had gobs of fun,"so t h a t ' s c o o l , r i g h t ?

SUN. JULY 3rd T h i s was a day of Networking i n Alex­

andra park, where groups i n v o l v e d i n A n a r c h i s t Black Cross or ALF work e t c . c o u l d get t o g e t h e r . Bands & musicians &. poets played/performed through-out the day, w i t h l o t s of Kops p a t r o l l i n g t h r o u g h the park.

MON. JULY 4 t h DAY OF ACTION O r i g i n a l l y t h e DOA was intended as a

g e n e r a l p r o t e s t a g a i n s t many s t a t e i n ­s t i t u t i o n s , c o r p o r a t i o n s & other scum who a t t e m p t & make our l i v e s n o t h i n g more t h a n numbers & d o l l a r s , but on Sunday th e US shot down an I r a n i a n a i r ­l i n e r k i l l i n g 290 people, & t h i s obvio­u s l y made people v e r y angry'. We g a t h ­ered o u t s i d e theUS consulate a t 12 noon & as I a r r i v e d I n o t i c e d the heavy p o l i c e presence. A f t e r demonst­r a t i n g o u t s i d e the Consulate we began moving down the s t r e e t & were c o r r a l l ­ed i n t o a t i g h t b a r r i c a d e t h a t k e p t us on the side-walk. G r a f f i t i was l e f t everywhere as we moved on & crossed t h e road. The media began posing a problem as t h e y began b l a t a n t l y f i l m ­i n g peoples faces & g e t t i n g i n the way. We stopped a t a S. A f r i c a n war memor­i a l where a n a z i f l a g , a US f l a g , & then t h e black f l a g o f Anarchy were t o r c h e d . The m i l i t a n c y & anger of the

p r o t e s t grew & we q u i c k l y took t o t h e s t r e e t s , l a u g h i n g & y e l l i n g "No War, No KKK, No F a s c i s t USA". Soon the Kop s made t h e i r f i r s t charge, l u n g i n g i n w i t h horses & n i g h t - s t i c k s , & from • ••• here on i t became l i k e a r u n n i n g s t ­r e e t - f i g h t t h r o u g h t h e down town core o f T o r o n t o . When the Kops moved i n t o a r r e s t people, other people would f i g h t bake &"unarrest" the person. At one i n t e r s e c t i o n we s t a r t e d h a u l i n g out some o f t h e kops own b a r r i c a d e s & mov­i n g them up t o b l o c k the horses, but t h e kops q u i c k l y charged us.

We wandered out o f t h e down-town area & some wimmin took o f f t h e i r tops i n d e f i a n c e o f t h e r i d i c u l o u s l y s e x i s t P u b l i c indecency" laws which f o r b i d s wimmin from exposing t h e i r chests b u t a l l o w s men t o . Some more people were a r r e s t e d & we moved on, making-our way t o Queens Park. At t h i s p o i n t the f u n ended f o r me as I was a r r e s t e d f o r a l l ­egedly " A s s a u l t " on a r e p o r t e r , haha! Everyone stopped i n Queens park. The kops were growing i n numbers, O n t a r i o P r o v i n c i a l p o l i c e & the c i t i e s " P u b l i c Order U n i t " were c a l l e d i n , so a t t h i s p o i n t t h e crowd d i s p e r s e d . About 31 people were a r r e s t e d , most on " A s s a u l t P o l i c e " or " A s s a u l t " . The b r u t a l i t y o f t h e p o l i c e was no s u r p r i s e , j u s t as i t was no s u r p r i s e t h a t 6 o f the b a s t -ardd were i n j u r e d & 3 sent t o the Hosp­i t a l :

D u r i n g t h e a c t u a l p r o t e s t i t may have seemed l i k e the p o l i c e were i n c o n t r o l , b u t on c l o s e r examination i t ' s obvious how fucked up t h e y were. Th i s i s c l e a r f o r 2 reasons 1) we had no pre-planned r o u t e , so t h e kops c o u l d n ' t p r e d i c t where we'd go or what we'd do, i t was t o t a l l y spontaneous, & 2) the kops were c o n s t a n t l y r e a c t i n g t o what we did. T h i s was o b v i o u s l y a s i t u a t i o n which these kops were u n f a m i l i a r w i t h . One t h i n g the kops d i d do was p r e v e n t us f r ­om a t t a c k i n g our r e a l t a r g e t s - c o r p o r a t ­i o n s , c a p i t a l i s m , consumer s o c i e t y e t c . I f a n y t h i n g the p o l i c e i n s t i g a t e d more of the v i o l e n c e i n t h e i r a ttempts t o p r o t e c t p r o p e r t y . Despite t h i s a few thousand d o l l a r s w o r t h of p r o p e r t y dam­age was i n f l i c t e d .

I n one newspaper account a kop s a i d " U s u a l l y t h e y go l i m p , we p i c k them up & t a k e them away. Thi s i s d e f i n a t e l y new- r u n n i n g i n t h e s t r e e t s " , & another s a i d "We can't pen them i n , t h i s i s l i k e Europe". Not q u i t e l i k e Europe, but you g e t t h e p o i n t . When I was a t t h e 52 D i v i s i o n Hqs, I l i s t e n e d i n on many r a d i o c o n v e r s a t i o n s & kops discuss­i n g the days a c t i o n s , & t h r o u g h t h e rad­i o one o f f i c e r r e p o r t e d "They're head­i n g up such-and-such a street',' t o which one kop r e p l i e d "Why don't we j u s t l e t them have th e whole damn c i t y ? * , & the o t h e r kop s a i d "We a l r e a d y have."

The kops use of "snatch-squads" was a l s o q u i t e i n t e r e s t i n g . About 4-5 kops would r u s h i n on a p r e - s e l e c t e d p r o t e s t ­er & t a c k l e him/her. This was o f t e n done a t i n t e r s e c t i o n s where th e crowd would be e f f e c t i v e l y t h i n n e d o u t , mak­i n g i t e a s i e r t o grab someone. Perhaps an a r t i c l e on p o l i c e t a c t i c s i n s i t u a t ­i o n s l i k e t h i s w i l l be done i n f u t u r e issues?

CONCLUSION How much p o s i t i v e a f f e c t t h e DOA had

i s hard t o say. I n a sense i t ' s much l i k e any a n a r c h i s t paper, l e a f l e t , book e t c . as i t i s i n i t s e l f a c r i t i s c -ism of the s t a t e , an a t t a c k a g a i n s t i t s i n s t i t u t i o n s , a l o u d v o i c e r a i s e d i n p r o t e s t . Perhaps i t w i l l s t i m u l a t e some people t o t h i n k more by themselves & a l s o c r i t i c a l l y o f t h e s t a t e , b u t how

Sunday June 19 about 2000 people showed up for the Popular Summit, an event planned to counter the Economic Summit happening at the same time. After many long and mostly tedious speeches at a rally at Queen's Park, people took t o the streets in what they had been to l d (by police) was an illegal march. We marched down University Ave. to Dundas st, where we encountered a massive police barricade, shoulder to shoulder hit squads of f i l t h , and heli­copters flying low over the crowd. Snipers were also spotted on a nearby roof. About 100 people sat down, b l o c k i n g t h e i n t e r s e c t i o n . Some massed at the barricades, while still

others milled about, drumming, chant­ing, singing, etc.

During the three or so hours we held the streets, a bonfire was started in the middle of the intersection upon which were hurled flags, effigies of the G-7, and finally three newspaper boxes from USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Spirits were high. Many people went over the barricades to their arrests, while others dis­mantled the barricades and threw one on the fire. A group of about 75 people, mostly anarchists, left the march near the end and headed back up Univer­sity, avoiding the inevitable sweep by police which was carried out shortly

afterwards, resulting in the nearly 150 arrests of those who remained.

The attitudes of anarchists towards the anti-summit protests were varied. Protesting these seven leaders is somewhat of a red herring, seeing as it's not just these seven who are a problem, but all leaders and capitalism itself. But many anarchists came out t o support t h e day's actions because t h e issue turned from one of protesting the leaders to one of reclaiming t h e streets of our city, which have been blocked off for us for t h e length of the summit.

West B e r l i n - S i n c e May 25, autonoms & a n a r c h i s t s have been i n h a b i t i n g Kubat T r i a n g l e , a no-mans land, 4 l i v i n g a l i f e of anarchy. Named a f t e r Norbert Kubat, the a n a r c h i s t who committed su­i c i d e while i n confinement l a s t year, Kubat i s a s m a l l t r i a n g l e approx. 9.8 a c r e s adjacent to the Wall on the west s i d e , but belonging to E a s t Ber­l i n . On J u l y 1, the land changes hands to W. B e r l i n which has plans to b u i l d a 6-lane autobahn. As the land has been v i r t u a l l y l e f t alone s i n c e the war, i t i s now a small p a r a d i s e of t r e e s & other w i l d , n a t i v e p l a n t s .

The o r i g i n a l sense to the encamp­ment was to r e c l a i m the land i n pro­t e s t of the planned c o n s t r u c t i o n of the autobahn. Yet t h a t meaning has d i f f u s e d i n t o a p l a y f u l , happy s t a y of anarchism which can be a p p l i e d t o a l l forms of oppression under the government of the s t a t e .

I t i s estimated th a t 100 s q u a t t e r s , 40 of them women, s l e e p i n t e n t s ft self-made hu t s , some of towering h e i ­ghts, a t Kubat. A d d i t i o n a l i n h a b i t -ors s t a y during the day only. T r a d i t ­i o n a l a n a r c h i s t f l a g s , p i r a t e f l a g s , 4 homemade c r e a t i o n s f l y proudly over the land. A p i r a t e r a d i o s t a t i o n , S a n s i b a r , broadcasts d i r e c t from the t r i a n g l e f o r a few hours d a i l y .

Because Kubat s t i l l t e c h n i c a l l y bel­ongs to E. B e r l i n , i t i s a small i s l ­and out of the d i r e c t reach of the W. B e r l i n p o l i c e . The E. B e r l i n p o l i c e have l i t t l e i n t e r e s t i n g e t t i n g i n v o l ­ved. A few o f f i c e r s keep a continuou-s peek over the w a l l from b i n o c u l a r s , but i f they are watching anything, i t i s the W. B e r l i n p o l i c e to make sure t h a t they do not invade t h e i r t e r r i t ­ory. However, i n s p i t e of t h i s the W. B e r l i n p o l i c e do e v e r y t h i n g i n t h e i r powers to provoke v i o l e n c e & to t r y to break the s p i r i t s of the squat­t e r s by u s i n g techniques of psycholog­i c a l t o r t u r e to induce a form of Post Traumatic S t r e s s D i s o r d e r . T h i s i s a common p s y c h o l o g i c a l d i s e a s e of V i e t ­nam war v e t e r a n s . Of course, the German a u t h o r i t i e s have had a l o t of experience i n the f i e l d of techniques of t o r t u r e as i s evident from Nazi Germany. At about 3 i n the morning, j u s t i n the deepest p a r t of the s l e e p of the s q u a t t e r s , the p o l i c e have pla­yed loud German f o l k s music ft sprayed f o r c e f u l streams of water from water tanks looking l i k e m i l i t a r y tanks onto the camp. T h i s week there were 3 days of hours of t e a r gas bombing & water s q u i r t i n g . 1 s q u a t t e r was hos­p i t a l i s e d a f t e r a cop threw a t e a r •=, gas bomb t h a t h i t him on the head. The W. B e r l i n p o l i c e are always on guard i n numbers of about ?0 to 500. They have besieged the t r i a n g l e with a metal fence. The only reason s q ­u a t t e r s are able to come & go as they p l e a s e i s because the Wall i s i n most p l a c e s a few metres shy of the a c t u a l East-West border. T h i s has c r e a t e d a t h i n c o r r i d o r out of reach of the W. B e r l i n p o l i c e where s q u a t t e r s may pass f r e e l y . The W. B e r l i n p o l i c e however, have manipulated t h i s h a l l -wayby b u i l d i n g b a r r i e r s to t r y to pre­vent people from e a s i l y g e t t i n g to the f r e e passageway. At the end of

t h e i r b a r r i e r s , l a r g e o f f i c e r s have stood & requested to s e a r c h through handbags f o r contraband. The W. Ber l i n p o l i c e have t r i e d to s c a r e the s q u a t t e r s * t o u r i s t s w i t h s i g n s & l e a f l e t s c l a i m i n g t hat there s t i l l

may be hidden bombs under the t r i ­angle from WW2. Few b e l i e v e t h i s s t o r y because they know t h a t the land was c l e a r e d a f t e r the war & f o r many y e a r s l e f t open f o r the p l e a s u r e of b i k e r i d e r s & w a l k e r s . These bomb s t o r i e s have c e r t a i n l y not e f f e c t e d the s q u a t t e r s who have dug trenches a l l around t h e i r camp, f o r t i f y i n g i t a g a i n s t i n v a s i o n s . There are many d i f f e r e n t types of people a t Kubat. The one t h i n g they have i n common though, i s the d i r t on t h e i r hands & c l o t h e s . Some spend the day p a r t y i n g o t h e r s r e l a x i n t h e i r t e n t s w i t h f r i e n d s , e n j o y i n g c o n v e r s a t i o n , s e l f -r o l l e d c i g a r e t t e s , magazines, & books. Some are busy doing chores l i k e wash­ing d i s h e s & p r ep a r i n g meals i n the Volxkuche, digging deeper t r e n c h e s , shopping, panhandling, f i l l i n g the community water b a r r e l e t c . There are always people on watch a t both e n t r a n c e s , c o n t r o l l i n g who e n t e r s ft making sure t h a t no-one takes un­a u t h o r i s e d p i c t u r e s (the s q u a t t e r s have had the p a s t experiences t h a t i n d i v i d u a l s have abused t h e i r r i g h t s to photograph. No one i s allowed to take p i c t u r e s u n l e s s accompanied by a Kubat t r i a n g l e s q u a t t e r who makes sur e t h a t no unmasked people are pho­tographed without p e r m i s s i o n ) . Some s q u a t t e r s must leave during the days to work or attend s c h o o l . And, l a s t but not l e a s t , t h e r e i s always some­one near with which to enter a sober­ing d i s c u s s i o n on anarchy, autonism, & p o l i t i c s & philosophy i n g e n e r a l .

WhilB the i n i t i a l reason f o r t h e i r encampment may be hidden under t h e i r t e n t s , 1 w i l l f i n d many educated, b r i g h t a n a r c h i s t s at Kubat t r i a n g l e l i v i n g anarchy. One of the more i n t e r e s t i n g t h i n g s I d i d w h i l e i n London was take p a r t i n a. s q u a t t e r s r e s i s t a n c e i n the Hackne ey d i s t r i c t of N o r t h e r n London. About 100 squats were t o be e v i c t e d a t S t a m f o r d - H i l l E s t a t e . Obviously t h i s news i s going t o be a few month s o l d when i t gets p r i n t e d b u t I thought i t would be p r e t t y i n t e r e s t ­i n g . (For an e x c e l l e n t account of the o v e r a l l s i t u a t i o n f o r Hackney s q u a t t e r s read Black F l a g 21-3-ee.) Mon. March 7• At around 4 am peop­l e gathered i n pre-determined f l a t s , t h e r e were about 20-25 i n the one I went t o . Candles p r o v i d e d l i g h t & t e a was made. At around 4.30 groups went out & began s e t t i n g up b a r r i c ­ades a t the entrances. Large i n d u s t ­r i a l r u b b i s h b i n s would be moved t o block an e n t r a n c e , t h e n we'd r e t u r n t o the f l a t . This procedure was r e ­peated a couple o f t i m e s , w i t h t h e o t h e r groups c a r r y i n g out the same a c t i o n s . At t h i s p o i n t I would say t h e r e were about 200 or more people.

By 5-30 t h e b a r r i c a d e s were s e t , i n c l u d i n g 2 cars which were s e t a-b l a z e . F i r e s were a l s o s e t i n the r u b b i s h b i n s . We t h e n w a i t e d f o r the expected p o l i c e ' s u r p r i s e ' r a i d . As d a y l i g h t came the t h r e a t o f p o l ­i c e a c t i o n lessened & some t e n s i o n was eased. The media were allowed t o e n t e r the e s t a t e , a l t h o u g h one r e p o r t e r who was present when we f i r s t s t a r t e d e r e c t i n g b a r r i c a d e s was hassled a l l morning. Many of the s q u a t t e r s were concerned about being i d e n t i f i e d .

The ' s u r p r i s e ' e v i c t i o n o b v i o u s l y wasn't much of a s u r p r i s e . About 500 cops & b a i l l i f f s were supposedly on hand, but the e s t a t e was now a 'No-go- area & would remain so f o r 3 • days i n t o t a l . I n my o p i n i o n , i f the p o l i c e had attempted t o e n t e r t h e r e would have been s t r o n g r e s i s t ­ance, but t h a t was o n l y d u r i n g t h a t f i r s t morning. I n t h e days t h a t f o l l o w e d the number of r e s i s t o r s dwindled as time dragged on, & many who d i d not l i v e on the e s t a t e l e f t . I t was r e a l i s e d i n l a t e r meetings t h a t everyone was prepared f o r t h e f i r s t morning, but no-one was p r e ­

pared f o r the days t h a t f o l l o w e d . And so, on Wednesday morning a t 10am when the s q u a t t e r s were supposed t o meet w i t h Hackney c o u n c i l , p o l i c e o v l o t o d l.ho nquatn. An p o l i c e great­l y outnumbered them, no r e s i s t a n c e o c c u r r e d . The e s t a t e was then made i n t o a m i n i - p o l i c e s t a t e t o p r e v e n t r e - s q u a t t i n g . The f u n n i e s t t h i n g I saw d u r i n g t h i s whole episode was when the owner o f one o f the t o r c h e d c a r s showed up... he was v e r y angry*. The car had a p p a r e n t l y been s t o l e n ( f r o m a r i c h neighborhood I hope'.) & t h e owner had i n s u r a n c e .

Wednesday evening about 20 s q u a t t ­e r s rushed i n t o town h a l l & d i s t u r b e ed t h e c o u n c i l meeting. I can imag­i n e t h e y were p r e t t y f r u s t r a t e d and angry! B r y n e l y Heaven, th e c o u n c i l l ­or most r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h e e v i c t ­i o n s , r e c i e v e d some deserved shots t o t h e head & had h i s eyeglasses broken. Harrassment of Heaven was so much t h a t he c o u l d n ' t l i v e a t home'. Five people were a r r e s t e d by p o l i c e who were a t the town h a l l e x p e c t i n g t r o u b l e . During the 3 day 'siege' i t was i n t e r e s t i n g t o see t h e r e a c t i o n of t h e a c t u a l t e n a n t s on t h e e s t a t e . Many supported t h e s q u a t t e r s , & some d i d n o t . The squa t t e r s made every e f f o r t t o accomodat date t h e t e n a n t s , a agate was secure ed t o a l l o w cars t o go t o work e t c . , garbage was cleaned up, r u b b i s h b i n s p u t back i n p l a c e . I r e c a l l one i r a t e t e n a n t s a y i n g the s q u a t t e r s destroyed the f l a t s & l i v e d l i k e p i g s . But o f t h e squats I saw, & t h e one I stayed i n f o r n e a r l y two months, they were c l e a n , w e l l taken care o f , & any problems i n e l e c t r i c ­i t y or plumbing were r e p a i r e d . . . af­t e r a l l , these are t h e i r homes'. And a f t e r most e v i c t i o n s , t h e plumb­i n g & e l e c t r i c i t y are d e s t r o yed by t h e p o l i c e & b a i l i f f s ! Because sq­u a t t i n g i s somewhat l e g a l , the counc­i l must have people who i n t e n d t o occupy a f l a t b e f o r e they can e v i c t . For S t a m f o r d - H i l l they supposedly had f a m i l i e s w a i t i n g i n Bed & Break­f a s t h o t e l s ready t o l i v e i n t h e ev­i c t e d f l a t s . But many o f t h e e v i c t ed s q u a t t e r s were f a m i l i e s . Because o f h i g h r e n t & h i g h unemployment, s q u a t t i n g i s t h e o n l y a l t e r n a t i v e . There are w e l l over 60,000 squats i n

London alone. Walking down any s t ­r e e t i n Hackney I could see a t l e a s t 2 empty f l a t s i n one b l o c k . The reason f o r the e v i c t i o n s seems ob­v i o u s t o me, economics. The g o v ' t , w i l l o b v i o u s l y make more money by f o r c i n g people t o pay r e n t t h a n a l l ow them t o l i v e o u t s i d e o f t h e econ­omic system. The g o v ' t , wants p a y i n i n g t e n a n t s n o t s q u a t t e r s .

As I was l e a v i n g London t h e s q u a t t ­e r s were a t t e m p t i n g t o become even more organised & p l a n n i n g more r e s i s ­tance f o r more expected mass e v i c t ­i o n s . H o p e f u l l y they w i l l be more s u c c e s f u l & b u i l d even s t r o n g e r r e s ­i s t a n c e t o t h e gov't.s o p p r e s s i o n .

Sunday, May 1, 1988. Ce n t r a l Park, New York c i t y . Free concert 12-8pm.

This years theme was P o l i c e Brutalii*-y. The pigs assigned to the concert were not too happy about t h i s & const­a n t l y hassled people about beer drink­ing, herb smoking e t c , a l s o undercover pigs wandered through the crowd, doing such l o v e l y things as taking p i c t u r e s of people f o r t h e i r f i l e s . Anway, to get on to the bands- there was quite a v a r i e t y , something f o r everybody.

I t s t a r t e d o f f with some hippies i t with acoustic g u i t a r s , then some rap bands, both which I found r a t h e r bor­ing. Then the best part of the a f t e r ­noon- Nausea. As soon as they walked onto the stage a l l the punks jumped out of t h e i r seats & ran to the f r o n t . Nausea played a l l t h e i r best songs such as "Productive not Des t r u c t i v e " , "World of tomorrow", "Red Winter" and a l s o a' cftVer of the business song "The r e a l enemy". We had a b l a s t , po/

oing, slamming, & diving under the hot summer sun i n the b e a u t i f u l outdoors. Next was a s a l s a band, then the F a l s e Prophets put on quite a t h e a t r i c a l performance, one of the h i g h l i g h t s was Stefan marching around the stage with a "SilencesDeath/AIDsgate" poster, then more hippies played which I miss­ed 'cause we went to get more beer & puff the sacred herb. When we got back a reggae band,

Chin A f r i c a played, they fucking jammed out! Great! On t h e i r l a s t -on song "One worlds enough f o r a l l of us" the audience helped them on the chorus & near the end of i t they i n v i t e d everyone to come on the stage & dance. A t e r r i f i c ending to an i n s p i r i n g concert, t h i s was one of the best RAR concerts I've seen over the ye a r s .

Fuck the c a p i t a l i s t slime who want to make money off our music. This i s the r e a l thing. Punks not Dead!

I n my opinion, animal l i b e r a t i o n i s an­imal l i b e r a t i o n . The longer people s i t back 4 accept the tor­ture of l i v i n g beings so s i m i l a r to ourselves, the longer people w i l l s t i l l b e lieve we can d e s t r ­oy the animals 4 ths world- ths f u r t h e r away any r s a l peace i s .

Like a l l struggles for l i f e , (and which i s n ' t ? ) , A.Lib. i s n ' t the struggle to end s t r u g g l e s , but r a t h e r another t o t a l l y v a l i d 4 equally as important part of ths o v e r a l l s t r u g g l e .
