18 THERAPY Enalapril + verapamil combination treats hypertension Combination therapy with enalapril plus verapamil may have synergistic effects in patients with mild-to- moderate hypertension, according to university and Lederle Laboratories researchers in the US. They consider that this combination may prove to be a valuable alternative to higher dose monotherapy for hypertension. The efficacy and safety of 4 weeks' treatment with once-daily verapamil120 or 240mg combined with enalapril 10mg, or either agent given alone, were evaluated in a multicentre, double-blind, placebo- controlled trial involving 186 men and women with essential hypertension (mean diastolic BP 95-114mm Hg). The magnitude of the antihypertensive effect of the combination regimens was significantly greater than that of either drug given alone, without any increase in adverse effects, say the researchers. The greatest reduction in systolic BP was recorded in the verapamil 240mg + enalaprillOmg treatment group [see table] . All active drug regimens in this study were significantly superior to placebo in lowering BP, with the exception of verapamil 120mg monotherapy.
