EPC Network Services

What is the EPC Network?● Infrastructure that leverages the Internet for management and application of RFID

product data● Will drive new generation of supply chain management applications enabled through

sharing of serialized, item-level product information

The EPC Network is how trading partners will utilize RFID-driven product data to Find, Connect and Transact Securely in the evolving supply chain

So what?• Delivers full supply chain visibility enabling “Track & Trace” of products

• Improves effectiveness and efficiency of supply chain

• New applications such as:+ Product Recall+ Counterfeit Reduction+ Diversion+ Reconciliation of Shipping & Receiving

VeriSign Selected to Operate Root Directory for Electronic Product Code (EPC) Network

Highly Scalable, Secure and Global Network Directory Service will enhance the application of RFID in the Supply Chain

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, January 12, 2004 -- VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of critical infrastructure services for the Internet and telecommunications networks, announced today it has been selected by EPCglobal to operate the authoritative directory for the EPC Network. The EPC Network is a system that leverages the existing Internet infrastructure to create a low-cost, standards-based set of services for trading partners to use RFID to discover and share product information throughout the supply chain.

Electronic Product Codes (EPC) are unique numbers that can be assigned to identify individual items in the supply chain. These numbers are embedded in tiny Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which transmit the EPC to nearby antennas without requiring traditional line-of-sight scanning, making it easier to track products as they move through the supply chain. Through use of the EPC network, businesses can become more efficient and productive in logistics, inventory management and product placement.

Critical EPC Network Service Offerings

Authoritative listing of manufacturers participating in EPC Network.

Managed service for Local ONS, the authoritative listing of products for a given manufacturer.

Hosted data repository that contains serialized product information for individual trading partners.

Provides “track and trace” services that enable discovery of multiple EPC Information Services across the supply chain that have serialized product information.

Provides authentication and authorization services for trading partner networks.

Suite of trusted 3rd party directory services that enables secure, real-time discovery and sharing of product data

EPC Trust Services offer the ability to accurately authenticate the identities of supply chain members before they get on the EPC Network

• Identify partners • Enforce data access policies• Encrypt product data

Emerging developments and opportunities

● RFIDs and the EPC Network will have a transformational impact on communication services business

● RFIDs and the EPC network are at a stage similar to the Internet circa 1993/1994

● Directory and Security services needed for network to reach its potential● Once the infrastructure in place, network usage climbs dramatically

over 5 - 7 years

● 2004/2005 focus:● Launch suite of directory and security services for the EPC Network● Seed the market for growth
