EmPower ProjectEmPower Intelligent Energy Innovation Prize

Leading figures from across the energy sector descended on Zara-

goza for a glittering ceremony to honour pioneering technologies

in the industry.

The EmPower Intelligent Energy Innovation Prize, created by the

EmPower consortium within the framework of the IEE programme,

celebrated the very best innovative small and medium-sized com-

panies working to deliver a low carbon, sustainable and energy ef-

ficient future.

The EmPower Intelligent Energy Innovation Prize has given the se-

condary users of the energy innovation sector such as installers,

architects and engineers an opportunity to have their newest solu-

tions and products judged by a preeminent panel of independent

engineers and experts from the energy sector. It is the place to see,

touch, feel and understand the future of energy innovation sector.

The Best of Innovations designation was awarded to products and

services with the highest judges’ scores from four partner regions.

The EmPower Intelligent Energy Innovation Prize honorees were fea-

tured in the quality video clips and presented at the official EmPower

Award Ceremony.

The EmPower Innovations Awards entries were judged on overall

engineering qualities related to technical specifications and mate-

rials, the product and service’s intended use and function, and how

innovation of the product and service compares to others in the

marketplace.

Amongst the top companies which scooped awards were Zwickau-

based (Saxony) BITSz engineering GmbH which won the EmPower

Intelligent Energy Innovation Prize in Saxony for its introduction of

drives offering high power density and efficiency which can be used

for machine tools, plastics machines and mobile machinery. Zara-

goza-based ENDEF Engineering S.L., which develops cutting-edge

hybrid solar panels called ECOMESS combining both photovoltaic

and thermal elements onto a single panel due to reduction of nee-

ded area by 40%, scooped the first award in Aragon. Collecting the

fist award in Tartu region was Tartu-based ARF Ehitus OÜ, which im-

pressed judges with its contruction of a low energy house Hommiku

street 6B in Tartu.

The low energy consumption is gained by designing the house with

a minimum outer surface and an efficient use of inner space. Other

technologies recognized included Afentoulidis Company’s pilot in-

stallation of heating of a two storey building in the city of Kozani

with the use of solar heating system, collected the first award in the

Region of Western Macedonia.

DBI-GastechnoloGIsches

The DBI consortium is the only business organization in Germany to serve the entire value chain of gas supply from production via retention and transport through to efficient, environmentally com-patible usage of renewable energy carriers. In collaboration with sDs Gmbh from Zwenkau, IfM from chemnitz and utW chem-nitz, a new method for examinations of industrial thermoprocess-ing equipment has been developed in a large R&D project which was funded by BMWi (identification number 0327482a). the project has already been completed. together with an 8-channel measuring system for long-term observation of the equipment’s vibration data, a measuring probe is the basis for VIBRoflaMM method. the probe records both the flames and the gas stream’s vibration data. Both devices were developed during the joint R&D project and are protected by respective patents.

ADES’s R&D&I team have developed an equipment unit that is an energy station. It combines solar and fossil fuel energy sources with accumulation systems, and is capable of filling the energy demand of small isolated communities or emergen-cy camps immediately. created for being self-sufficient units, it is possible to choose between 100% renewable generation or mixed generation: these PPs become an optimum renewable replacing solution to standard power generators, through sav-ing an important quantity of diesel and CO2 emissions.

Electric drives account for a great share of consumed energy world-wide. therefore, BItsz engineering, in cooperation with other partners, has developed leantec drive which increases efficiency in industry-scale applications by 10 to 30%. lean-tec drives are high-polarity transversal flux drives with no permanent magnets that offer the highest possible resource efficiency on the market by utilizing innovative materials and control processes. Special advantages arise when lEANTEC drives are used in machine-tools, for plastics processing or for electrification of construction and agricultural machinery

ARF Arendus OÜ specializes in construction of low energy houses. the aim is to create cozy homes with maximum energy efficiency possible. aRf ehitus oÜ won the Intelligent energy prize for its work on the two family house Hommiku street 6B in tartu. the energy consumption by the PhPP2007 standard is an amazing 24,7 kWh/m2 in a year. the low energy consumption is gained by designing the house with a minimum outer surface and with an efficient use of inner space. the building is a fine example of energy efficeint construction in tartu and estonia.

oÜ termoplIlt

oÜ termopilt field of expertise is consulting and engineering technical systems. the company conducts energy audits, air tightens tests and thermography. the company is experienced and well known in Estonia for its work. The Intelligent Energy prize was won for the engineering and design of complete renovation works on Kaunase pst 19 apartment building in tartu in 2012. During the course of the renovation the house was insulated, the windows exchanged, all electrical systems renovated and a new heating system together with apartment based heat exchange ventilation system was installed. as a result of the renovation the final heating energy consumption of the building is 41,7 kWh/m2 per year.

enDeF enGIneerInG s.l.

The second generation of hybrid solar panels called ECOmESS have been developed by the company EndeF in Saragossa. These hybrid panels combine both photovoltaic and thermal elements onto a single panel, which reduced the needed area by 40% com-paring to equal energy production of conventional photovoltaic modules and thermal collectors. The innovation of the ECOmESS panels lies in the incorporation of a Transparent Insulating Cover (tIc) with neutral gas, which reduces the heat losses and offers a higher efficiency than the currently hybrid panels on the market.

aFentoulIDIs - hYDronIc

Afentoulidis Company operates in heating and air conditioning systems. The proposal submitted by the company regards a pilot installation of heating two storeys building in the city of Kozani with the use of solar heating system. The proposal is based on two patents. The system gives priority to the heating and makes considerable savings in the use of conventional heat source with potentials of upgrading. It consists of a controller suitable for the heating system developed from the same company, which optimizes its operation, by controlling a heat storage system in efficient and safe way and keeping it simple at the same time.

KIKIs enerGY sYstems

Kikis Energy Systems implements innovative solutions in the establishment of solar heating and cooling systems on build-ings. The project proposal is about house heating and cool-ing. for the heating purposes, a combined system consists of a photovoltaic system, a fireplace and a solid fuel boiler. the cooling is operated by a solar system. The combination of electricity, photovoltaic systems and solid fuel appliances as assistive devices which utilize the discharged energy, creates an intelligent system which covers the need of heating, cooling and domestic hot water, relieving completely the use of oil.

Energie.depot implements tailor-made heat storage systems made of Glass fibre Reinforced Plastics (GRP) that are assem-bled on-site, are freely configurable in their volume, are equipped with internal corrugated tube water heating or external plate heat exchangers, and can be provided with isolation on request. The Wärme-Hamster© is a heat storage system made of GRP which, depending on the equipment e.g. solar, heating/cooling or heat recovery systems can cache the generated energy as long as it is required (day/night, week/weekend, summer/winter).

epIc poWer conVerters s.l.

epic Power develops, produces and sells energy recovery sys-tems that store energy for a later use by the same system. The current product, the eRs P3K is intended for elevators whose motor generates when the counterweighted lift goes up empty or goes down full. The system is plug-and-play and can be ap-plied to an existing installation in a neutral way. a high-efficient bidirectional power electronics converter stores the energy in an ultracapacitances module and allows for a later reuse of this en-ergy producing savings up to 35% and lower peak consumption.

oÜ VIVa InsenerID

VIVA Insenerid OÜ is an engineering company specializing in the design and expertise of water supply, sewerage, heating, ven-tilation and cooling systems and expertise. the company was founded in 2012 and has up to this day designed major systems for a number of public buildings and constructions. The com-pany won the Intelligent Energy Prize in Estonia for its work on the design of heating and ventilation system in the Technology Building of the Estonian University of life Sciences. The system is highly automated with the system constantly adjusting to the specific use of the class rooms.

emelcat - parastatIDIs s.a.

eMelcat manufactures, trade, and establish energy efficiency systems. this particular project is about heating a business offic-es space by using a combined system with the use of geothermal energy along with high performance solar panels. Solar panels also produce Domestic house Water, and by the use of geother-mal energy, low water temperatures for cooling purposes are ex-ploited during summer months. This system has achieved zero oil consumption and a significant reduction of co2 emissions.

OÜ ARF Arendus and 6b Hommiku Street private house

OÜ ARF Arendus is a company specializing in energy-efficient con-struction. The company focuses on creating cosy and economical homes for environmentally conscious customers. making use of estonian products, solutions and building materials has been the practice so far and will be for the future.

OÜ ARF Ehitus won the Intelligent Energy Prize for managing the engineering and construction process of the low-energy building at hommiku street 6b in tartu, estonia. the building was completed in the autumn of 2012. It is a 338-square-meter, two-family home. The building is a two-storey concrete building situated in the quiet Veeriku district on the southern side of Tartu.

The overall projected energy consumption of the house following the PhPP2007 calculation standard is just 24.7 kilowatt-hours per square meter per year. This remarkable result is the product of thorough planning. The overall shape of the building is a cube so as to minimise the outer surface. The shape of the building is

obtained by optimizing the floor planning through minimizing sup-porting rooms and maximizing the size of the living quarters. the outer design is a large factor in overall energy efficiency. The need for natural light in the Hommiku Street low-energy house is solved by installing windows only on the south side of the house. This al-lows the use of sunlight from the south as a natural heater for the house, and also to avoid loss of heat through the cold north side of the house.

The interior climate of the Hommiku Street house is ensured by two passive house-standard German-built Paul Novus ventilation units – one unit per apartment. The heat recovery in the ventilation units can be as high as 93%. heating of the building is solved by air-to-air heat pumps – one in each apartment.

The construction of the building enables later installation of fire-places to heat the apartments. as a rule, the house is built us-ing Estonian construction materials and solutions. The walls are insulated by Estonian-produced Aeroc and Reiden insulation ma-terials, giving the walls and the roof a u-value of just 0,095. the

aluminium-wooden windows used in the house are produced in south Estonia in Võru by the RehPol OÜ window company. The Võru produced windows comply with the passive-house standard and have a u-value of just 0,69. the inner finishing is done with Estonian-produced lime plaster and clay plaster.

the manager of aRf ehitus oÜ, arvo lehemets, states that the construction costs of the low-energy house are around 10% to 15% higher than a similarly sized “regular” house. at current en-ergy prices, the payoff period is calculated to be around 7 to 10 years. the projected life expectancy of the building is 50 years. Steadily rising energy prices could shorten the payoff period even further.

The City of Tartu has recognized the effort towards energy effi-ciency in the construction of the Hommiku Street low-energy house. The simple yet effective solutions in the house are applyable in pri-vate or public buildings. therefor the building, the solutions and the effort from oÜ aRf ehitus are a remarkable example for tartu, Estonia and Europe in constructing energy-efficient homes.

Maja on loodud kuubiku kujulisena, et vähendada välispinda. maja akende asetus ja suurused on kujun-datud selliselt, et põhjaküljel oleks minimaalselt aknaid ja loomuliku valguse vajadus oleks kaetud maja lõunapoolsete akendega. maja on suurepärane näide energiasäästlikust ja funktsionaalsest arhitek-tuurist.

Η εταιρία κέρδισε το βραβείο Ευφυούς Ενέργειας για το έργο της στο σπίτι δύο οικογενειών στην οδό hommiku 6B στο tartu. Η κατανάλωση ενέργειας από τον PhPP2007 είναι 24,7 kWh ανά τετραγωνικό μέτρο το χρόνο. Η χαμηλή κατανάλωση ενέργειας έχει επιτευχθεί με το σχεδιασμό του σπιτιού με ελάχιστη εξωτερική επιφάνεια και με την αποτελεσματική χρήση του εσωτερικού χώρου. oÜ Viva Insenerid is a small engineering and expertise company in tar-tu, specialising in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. the company has designed and consulted on energy-efficient systems for multiple reconstructions, among them several science and educational buildings.

One of the public educational buildings in Estonia that has recently un-dergone a comprehensive renovation is the Estonian University of life sciences (eMÜ) technology Building in tartu. cooperation between the client and Viva Insenerid OÜ has resulted in a construction project fea-turing several intelligent energy solutions.

the 6-storey eMÜ technology Building houses classrooms, offices, workshops and laboratories for the Tartu Technology College and EmÜ Institute of technology, covering over 7.000 m2. after reconstruction and renovation, the building’s heating energy consumption dropped by 24% compared with 2008, to just 75.9 kWh/(m2·a). the decrease in heating energy consumption per square meter exceeds by several de-grees the electricity consumption, which is 31.9 kWh/(m2·a). this has increased due to installed automation, constant monitoring and mea-suring sensors. In order to conserve heat, the building has become al-most completely airtight, with new insulation and windows. In addition to improved energy efficiency, the other, equally important objective of

the renovation was a good indoor climate. for this purpose, a demand-controlled heating and ventilation system was installed, which regulates airflow throughout the whole building according to co2 levels and room temperature, monitored in every room.

according to the project engineer, Mr. Mart sibul, the solutions pro-posed were quite rare in estonia when the design was first being drawn up, but have since been implemented more and more due to the recog-nized efficiency and steadily decreasing costs of the technology.

Fresh air intake depends on CO2 level, which essentially depends on the number of people in each room. exhaust air heat is routed to a heat exchanger, which heats fresh air in the winter and building water sup-ply in the summer with a recovery efficiency rate of 80%. With precise control of the real demand for heating, the principal energy saving in the rooms is achieved.

When people or the sun heat the room above a set temperature, the thermostat valves of the radiators close. and when the room is empty, the intake valves close almost entirely, decreasing the air exchange to a minimum ventilation rate. All the windows can be opened and closed as desired without affecting the sensitive system or wasting heat. they are equipped with microswitches that also close thermostat valves of

the radiators. When possible, cooler outdoor air is used for cooling the rooms by opening VAV-valves fully. Such a system operates most ef-fectively in cooler climate regions and in buildings where large groups of people move frequently from one room to another, says Mart sibul. A DCm ventilation system can be installed in almost every large recon-structed building, provided the sensors and automation are chosen and designed according to the precise actual usage of rooms.

the building is heated from the tartu central heating network, but it has an independent fuel laboratory, fuelled by furnaces with a com-bined output of 300 kW. such laboratories are commonplace in larger technology universities, but usually the heat produced during research is wasted. In the eMÜ technology Building, the engineers directed the heat to the central system to warm the intake air or water in accumula-tion tanks.

Base structures and supply lines for mounting solar panels in the future are already installed on the roof. In addition, the heating and ventilation system is designed so that it may be gradually updated to be even more effective. the admirable aims of the university of life sciences and professional capabilities of OÜ Viva Insenerid have been recognized by the city of tartu, and the engineers were awarded the Intelligent energy Prize in 2013.

VIVa Insenerid oÜ on tartus paiknev 2012. aastal asutatud insenerifir-ma, mille tegevusaladeks on veevarustuse-, kanalisatsioonisüsteemide, kütte-, ventilatsiooni- ja jahutussüsteemide projekteerimine ning ek-spertiis. Ettevõte võitis Nutika Energialahenduse auhinna Eesti maaül-ikooli Tehnikamaja kütte- ja ventilatsioonisüsteemi projekteerimisega. Η VIVa Insenerid oÜ είναι μια τεχνική εταιρεία που ειδικεύεται στο σχεδιασμό και την τεχνογνωσία συστημάτων υδροδότησης, αποχέτευσης, θέρμανσης, εξαερισμού και ψύξης. Η εταιρεία ιδρύθηκε το 2012 και μέχρι σήμερα έχει σχεδιάσει σημαντικό αριθμό συστημάτων για δημόσια κτίρια και κατασκευές. Η εταιρεία κέρδισε το βραβείο Ευφυούς Ενέργειας στην Εσθονία για το έργο της σχετικά με το σχεδιασμό θέρμανσης και εξαερισμού στο κτίριο Τεχνολογίας του εσθονικού Πανεπιστημίου Ανθρωπιστικών Επιστημών. Το σύστημα είναι σε μεγάλο βαθμό αυτοματοποιημένο και προσαρμόζεται διαρκώς στην εκάστοτε χρήση των αιθουσών διδασκαλίας.

VIVA Insenerid OÜ es una empresa de ingeniería especializada en el diseño y con experiencia en sistemas de suministro de agua, alcantaril-lado, calefacción, ventilación y refrigeración. la empresa fue fundada en 2012 y hasta la fecha ha diseñado importantes sistemas para un número de edificios y construcciones públicos. la empresa ganó el Pre-mio de Energía Inteligente en Estonia por su trabajo en el diseño de sistemas de calefacción y ventilación en el edificio de tecnología de la Universidad Estonia de Ciencias de la Vida. El sistema está altamente automatizado y se adapta de forma constante al uso específico de las aulas.

termopilt oÜ was founded in 2004, and they have consulted on more than 2000 projects since then. they started as a small company offer-ing thermography and air insulation measurement services. Termopilt oÜ still offers these services today, but their focus has shifted to the planning and engineering of energy-efficient buildings. they are often asked for comments when articles are written about the field of ener-gy-efficient buildings, due to their extensive knowledge and expertise in the matter.

Apartment houses dating back to the Soviet era are being renovated throughout Estonia in order to reduce their en ergy consumption and improve the quality of life of their residents. Termopilt OÜ caught the attention of the jury of the Intelligent Energy Prize by planning and en-gineering the renovation of the 19 Kaunase Avenue apartment building. The outcome of Termopilt OÜ’s high-quality and well thought-through work is an energy class a building that consumes as little as 47.1 kWh/m² of heat energy per year, has a healthier interior climate, and pro-vides a higher quality of life to its occupants.

the renovation process of the 45-apartment building started from thorough consultations and discussions with its residents. The scope of the planned work was large, because the pre-renovation state of

the building was relatively poor: the heating and ventilation systems were inefficient, windows and doors out-dated, and so on. toomas Räh-monen, the manager of termopilt oÜ, says that the renovation of 19 Kaunase avenue was a perfect example of concerted teamwork be-tween the client, the engineer and the builder. It was everybody’s aim to achieve a high quality end result.

excellence lies in a complete approach to the renovation process. that was the case with Termopilt OÜ and 19 Kaunase Avenue. The surface of the house was insulated with high-quality ePs silver insulation board, which is up to 20% more efficient than regular ePs board. all the win-dows and doors were replaced. to minimize the cold even further, all the balconies were insulated and enclosed with glazing. The central heat-ing system was rebuilt, from the central heating unit to new radiators in every apartment. The latter were equipped with individual heating meters to make the residents more aware of the merits of reduced en-ergy consumption. last but not least, a heat recovery ventilation system was installed, the efficiency of which is around 70%, according to initial measurements. the renovation package included more elements, but these were the main factors in achieving the desired efficiency.

Rähmonen believes that technical and physical measures can help to

achieve approximately 50% of energy savings. from that point on, ev-ery additional percentage point of saved energy requires extra steps, as well as engagement with residents. typically, work ends when the construction is complete, but fortunately that was not the case with 19 Kaunase Avenue. By keeping an eye on residents’ energy consump-tion practices, and by educating those who consume a great deal more than their neighbours, the housing co-operative board has managed to increase energy saving rates to as high as 63% (according to data gathered in March 2013). termopilt oÜ still assists when the board happens to have questions regarding energy efficiency.

The City of Tartu as the organizer of Intelligent Energy Prize competi-tion in tartu region has recognized the effort towards energy efficiency in the renovation of the Kaunase Avenue 19. The innovative solutions used and the complete approach to the renovation are a stellar example for all apartment buildings in Tartu in need of renovation. Renovating Soviet era apartment buildings for improving the living conditions and energy efficiency is an important goal for the city of tartu. therefor the renovated apartment building is a great example for encouraging investments into renovation and innovative solutions. Termopilt OÜ is presented with the prize for it’s exceptional work on engineering the renovation and the use of innovative solutions.

OÜ Termpolilt tegevusalaks on insener-tehniliste tööde konsultatsioonid ja projekteerimine. teostatakse termograafiat, õhutiheduse kontrolli ja energiaauditit. firma näol on tegemist tuntud ja kogenud ettevõttega, kelle töid teatakse üle Eesti. Nutika Energialahenduse auhinna võitis ettevõte Tartu linnas asuva korterelamu Kaunase pst 19 renoveerim-istööde projekteerimisega. Renoveerimistööde käigus soojustati hoone, vahetati kõik korterite ja koridoride aknad ja rõdud ehitati kinnisteks, vahetati elektrisüsteem, rajati uus küttesüsteem ning paigaldati kort-eripõhine soojatagastusega ventilatsioonisüsteem. Tööde tulemusena on hoone renoveerimisjärgne kütte energiakulu 47,1 kWh/m2/a. arvest-uslik energiamärgis on A-klass.

for BItsz engineering from saxonian Zwickau, Germany, the increasing demand for energy and resource-efficient solutions is challenge and chance alike. the family business that was founded in 2007 offering employment to more than 30 people has been emphasizing innovation from the very beginning thus creating unique solutions and products for its customers.

A key factor for success is cooperation and knowledge transfer with other technology-oriented companies as well as institutions of higher education and other research-based institutions. highly qualified and motived personnel is the company’s core asset; therefore, staff training programs, individual career planning, flexible working hours and social benefits are a natural part of the corporate strategy. since leantec technology is a long-term investment into the company’s future con-struction works for a drive power converter construction site already started in 2012 aiming to start operating in the beginning of 2014.

lEANTEC drive technology is based on the operating principles of transversal flux and reluctance. transversal flux motors provide highest efficiency and power density, however, a great deal of effort was neces-sary to produce them. Reluctance drives, on the other hand, are fairly easy to be produced and do not need expensive permanent magnets. Yet they could only provide low torque qualities which were not suf-ficient for industry-level applications. the industry’s demand for elec-

tric drives that offer all of the just mentioned advantages but lack the disadvantages incentivized both the BITSz engineering management and the development team to take this ambitious challenge. Achieving this objective required an entire bundle of innovations. to save weight, newest compound materials and carbon composites have been used to replace aluminum and steel components like rotor and stator and as for parts like the motor controller, a completely new type of kind had to be introduced. for a successful development process, BItsz is cooperating with Dresden technical university, Ilmenau technical uni-versity and Westsächsische Hochschule zwickau university of applied sciences in an interdisciplinary research network. Industry partners have been involved in conception and development from the beginning. For instance, schmuhl faserverbundtechnik builds and delivers important core components.

BITSz engineering is also closely cooperating with SAmAG Saalfelder Werkzeugmschinen GmbH. Both parties are shareholders of lEANTEC motor GmbH & Co. KG which is a holding company for lEANTEC proj-ect. furthermore, saMaG is the main customer for leantec drives to use them in circular tables of their own portfolio and supply them to other producers. Further cooperation has been established with re-gional producers of special machinery. for instance, RaKo Gmbh Gel-enau will be granted the opportunity to use specifically tailored lean-TEC drives for special clamping devices in their products as part of a technology transfer. the result of all those efforts is a transversal flux reluctance drive with high polarity that comes with a disc motor design – the lEANTEC drive. It is particularly suitable for industry-scale application, economically feasible, compact, efficient and reliable and, being a direct drive, replaces complicated engine-transmission combi-nations. New motor controllers aid to serve highest demands in torque

quality and positioning. therefore, leantec drives fit perfectly well as components for energy-efficient products and processes in the me-chanical engineering sector, in plastics processing, in mobile machinery and in agricultural machinery. One of the main advantages is the great bandwidth of torque and rotational speed. leantec drives here differ from established technologies in that sector. currently, they can reach torques of more than 1000 nm, rotational speeds of more than 3000 1/min and power densities of approx. 2 kW per kg. With performance levels reaching from 40 to 200 kW they target a performance class very relevant for the industry. Torque motors function at high and constant torques, however, unlike leantec drives they are tied to a single rota-tional speed due to the technology used.

asynchronous low-pole motors and permanent magnet excited synchro-nous motors can reach high rotational speeds but lack high torques, unfortunately. therefore, products and processes utilizing such drives often have to face compromises in the selection of gears used, their drives operate under suboptimal circumstances or they have to couple two different motors. using leantec drives there are no compromises anymore in relevant application scenarios. examples:

Electric extruderextruders are plastics-processing machines used produce hoses, foils, tubes and more. They liquefy plastics granules by compressing them through rotation in an endless screw. upon ignition, an extremely high starting torque is necessary, however, while running the processing ma-chine needs high rotational speed with constant torque. today`s extrud-ers try to solve that problem either by using an over-sized motor which unfavorably runs in part-mode or by using a very maintenance-intensive gear that lowers efficiency. leantec drives, on the other hand, provide energy savings of up to 20%. turning processing in milling centers: Mill-ing centers are the most important machine tools and a great support of the German export industry. owners of milling centers are currently trying to introduce turning processing on their sites. This will lead to increased process efficiency and product quality since processes like transportation, rewiring, setup and calibration can be abandoned. how-ever, the milling center’s circular table which has been used solely for positioning and calibration tasks so far has to be powered with a drive providing high and constant torques over a longer period of time. De-pending on the process, leantec drives can boost energy savings and efficiency by 10 up to 30% trough elimination of the above mentioned processes.

Wheel loader drivesWheel loaders nowadays are either operated with mechanically coupled manual transmissions or hydraulic-hydrostatic wheel drives. Both op-tions suffer from very high efficiency losses. therefore, for huge ma-chinery used in mining manufacturers Kommatsu and DEmAG have already established Diesel-powered drives which are far more energy-efficient. leantec wheel drives allow for even smaller diesel-electric wheel loaders making them more lightweight and efficient. for mo-bile machinery in typical scenarios of use, the Diesel-saving potential amounts to approx. 20%.

2. the second product, the pressure heat accumulator from GRP, funded by the federal Ministry of economics and tech-nology in the period from 2009 to 2011, was developed by a team of experts was awarded with an innovation prize at the 21st symposium for thermal solar energy in 2011 in Kloster Banz. Meanwhile, it is the first large project with 3 pressure accumulators with a volume of 6m³ in the Pressure Class 6 bar

Since then the strategy of the company is to elaborate projects for developing and using innovative technologies and methods. Being an intermediary between universities, research institutions and the gas economy, the DBI consortium contributes to sustainable energy solu-tions. The basis of our work is a systematic approach beyond individual business divisions.Gas and oil production resp. retentionThe subject of gas and oil production resp. retention has its focus in the area of analysis and modeling gas fields and gas stores. It is dis-cussing all questions on the optimization of production of existing gas fields and stores as well as exploration of new structures for gas stores. furthermore, the DBI consortium is equipped with a Mineralogical lab to be able to record rock parameters and their mutations under real conditions. a group of themes are among others the influence of differ-ent gas components (CO2, h2, and o2) on reservoir rocks. integration of renewable energy carriers into an existing gas infrastructurethe subject of gas grids/ gas facilities is working on new possibilities to prepare the existing gas grid for transporting and storing energy. It relates especially to upgrades of grids for an incentive regulation of topics regarding condition-based maintenance and forecasting a life span via network planning of surface facilities of stores through to con-sumers as well as supporting grid operators in safety-related questions. further points of focus lie in topics like smart Gas Grids, integrating renewable energy carriers into the gas grid or developing concepts for the intake of hydrogen from wind-generated electricity “Power to Gas”. In addition, the DBI consortium is equipped with a laboratory which is unique in Europe. ViBrOFLAMM – opto-accoustic examinations of industrial thermoprocessing equipmentBurner-related pulsation in combustion chambers of industrial thermo-processing equipment leads to vibrations which, depending on their in-tensity, may substantially damage that equipment. Due to resonance effects, complex damages to the entire system, con-

sisting of burner, fluid supply, combustion chamber and the flue gas tract, are a typical consequence. also other components such as sen-sors are affected. the resonance problem in industrial tanks and fur-naces, for instance resulting from inappropriate firing methods, causes economic losses through efficiency decrease, quality issues or unpre-dicted machine downtimes. speaking for Germany only, losses amount to three-digit million euro sums. In collaboration with SDS GmbH from Zwenkau, IfM from chemnitz and utW chemnitz, a new method for ex-aminations of industrial thermoprocessing equipment has been devel-oped in a large R&D project which was funded by BMWi (identification number 0327482a). the project has already been completed. together with an 8-channel measuring system for long-term observa-tion of the equipment’s vibration data, a measuring probe is the basis for VIBRoflaMM method. the probe records both the flames and the gas stream’s vibration data. Both devices were developed during the joint R&D project and are protected by respective patents.

tracking of optical data is carried out with a 90-degree boroscope which is integrated in the probe and mounted with an industrial camera that operates within 400 to 800 nm of spectral range.All recorded videos are saved on a PC and can be thermo-graphically edited or evaluated if necessary.

examining vibrations in industrial thermoprocessing equipment requires sensors to be able to operate within a frequency spectrum of up to 1 khz (vibration acceleration) or up to 40 khz (vibration velocity), re-spectively. therefore, a very small piezo-electrical sensor was chosen and mounted in the probe’s head at an angle of 90 degrees in the measuring direction. This arrangement ensures a direction-dependent vibration determination which is congruent with the optical system’s viewing direction.an opto-accoustic examination of industrial thermoprocessing equip-ment requires knowledge of the equipment’s resonance frequency. This frequency is either measured on-site or calculated based on models and construction blueprints.

Via long-term measuring of the equipment’s vibration data one is able to determine possible irregularities for given scenarios of usage. Par-ticular scenarios showing irregularities are then examined to find out what role the firing process plays as a stimulant for the vibrations.

Afentoulidis Company resides in the city of Kozani. It is a ser-vice provider and he operates in technical studies and estab-lishing heating and air conditioning systems. The proposal sub-mitted by the company for the empower Prize is titled “solar thermal heating system Innovative features” and it belongs in “state of the art of renewable energy for heating and cool-ing buildings” area of excellence. It is a pilot plant heating two-storey building in the city of Kozani. The heating system inside the premises consists of a special underfloor construc-tion. It is a grid of pipes which is placed below the finished floor without a layer of concrete. this results in a low thermal inertia of the system and the direct heating of the house. A big advantage regarding the energy saving is the feed water’s temperature, which is particularly low, 30° c. Because of this low temperature it is possible to use solar thermal in order to cover the heating needs of the house. The heating system makes almost no use of conventional heat source. It features a controller which is suitable for the heating system and it op-timizes the system operation, and also a heat storage system which is simple to manage, efficient and safe. some conditions, such as heating by an underfloor system of ex-tremely low temperatures, installing as many heat pipes as pos-sible, installing sufficient storage containers with the appropriate content and of course sufficient sunshine, so that the project has a good techno-economic result.the system is sized, installed and put into efficient operation. the number and the volume of storage tanks are very significant for the final output. the electronic control system is structured in a way that it can be expanded in the future by adding additional storage containers.the storage system is based on the following considerations: the solar heat is collected in 800 or 1000 liters container and is stored in the right temperature. If for example underfloor heating operates at 30° c, the effective accumulation temperature is 32° c. this is achieved by the special controller - inverter, developed specifically for this application.It continuously changes the speed of the solar pump, while mea-suring their flow temperature, so that it maintains the tempera-ture at 32° c. once the container is filled of solar heat, the heat (containing water) is transported in another container which serves consumption. the containers for consumption can be many, depending on the desired storage and heat pipes performance. the system knows exactly how many and which containers are full of heat and thus ready to bleed. once a container is empty, it is refilled from the solar container. the system is simple and completely effective. there is no need to check the temperatures before bleed, because it is affected neither by the laminated nor

by temperature reduction of uncontrolled mixing of returnable. the system also produces domestic hot water, once the heating needs are covered. unlike other systems in the market, this par-ticular system gives priority to the heating of the building.

The project is based on two patents. Furthermore a relative research program was approved through a competition to the General secretariat for Research and technology, based on those patents. after the end of the experiments in the conduct of the program, the pilot heating plant was manufactured. the innova-tive nature of the proposal is considered to be axiomatic. The pilot plant could be followed by others of the same or larger scale. the coverage rate of heating, at least for Mediterranean climates is high. The resulting data of this pilot plant show that an average rate is about 40%, reaching 80% with use of more heat pipes and containers.

this solar thermal system confirms that a heating system with almost zero consumption of conventional energy can be installed. this system is adjusted to the Mediterranean climate, and unlike other systems in market of northern europe, it gives priority on heating and not on the hot water.the system operates since november 2012. Regarding solar thermal, the market response was really positive, since the op-eration of the facility was proved to be entirely successful, while the special controllers penetrated in the market as a new, high technological standard and specialized product.

El sistema da prioridad a la cale-facción y representa un considerable ahorro frente al uso de fuentes de calor convencional con potencial de mejora. Consta de un controlador adecuado para el sistema de calefacción desarrollado por la propia empresa, que optimiza su funcionamiento, mediante el control de un sistema de almacenamiento de calor de forma eficiente y segura, que al mismo tiempo es sencillo.

eMelcat manufactures, trade, and establish energy efficiency Systems. The main activity of the company is the construction of turnkey energy and electrical projects. since 2003 the com-pany improves and studies the manufacture of vacuum tube so-lar collectors.

this particular project is about heating an office building com-pany, a surface of 120 m2, located on fourth climate zone area (Kozani-Municipality of eordaia). In the premises of this building there is an oil boiler and fan coils. Due to the high price of oil, eMelcat decided to replace it with a more ecological, less en-ergy intensive and very economical solution. In order to exploit the sunshine and the geothermal fields, the company chose to combine geothermal energy and solar panels of high efficien-cy. The requirements of the company primarily are focused on space heating. Domestic house water is required mainly in sum-mer season and it is produced by solar panels. also, because of the high cost of the air conditions, none were installed for the cooling of the space. subsoil’s low temperatures will be exploit-

ed with the installation of geothermal systems during summer, so that the temperature is maintained in lower levels. this system has achieved zero oil consumption and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions.In addition, for the heating and cooling of the space, as well as for the production of domestic house water, only renewable en-ergy sources were used. Solar systems make use of the sunlight through solar panels in order to heat the water which will be used by another system for heating.

In conjunction with the installation of geothermal pump, the fol-lowing advantages are achieved:

the project is expected to be depreciated in maximum 5 to 7 years with no finance. By using solar collectors, heating costs can be reduced 30% to 60%. In addition to geothermal operation, this reduction can be up to 100%.

EmElCAT has cooperated with several Technical Institutions and also with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for the purposes of this proposal.

Οι ηλιακοί συλλέκτες παράγουν επιπλέον ZnX, ενώ παράλληλα με τη χρήση γεωθερμίας γίνεται εκμετάλλευση των χαμηλών θερμοκρασιών του υπεδάφους κατά τους θερινούς μήνες. eMelcat fabrica, comercializa e instala sistemas de eficiencia en-ergética. este proyecto en particular se refiere a calefacción para un espacio de oficinas comerciales mediante el uso de un sistema combi-nado utilizando energía geotérmica junto con paneles solares de alto rendimiento. los paneles solares también producen Agua Sanitaria Do-méstica, y mediante el uso de la energía geotérmica, se aprovechan las bajas temperaturas del agua para la refrigeración durante los meses de verano. Este sistema ha logrado un consumo cero de petróleo y una reducción significativa de las emisiones de co2.

eMelcat produziert und vertreibt energie-effizienz-systeme. Dieses spezielle Projekt dient der Erwärmung eines Büroraumes durch ein kom-biniertes System unter Nutzung von geothermischer Energie zusammen mit Hochleistungs-Sonnenkollektoren. Die Sonnenkollektoren produz-ieren zudem Warmwasser und durch die Nutzung von geothermischer Energie werden niedrige Wassertemperaturen zur Kühlung während der Sommermonate verwertet. Das System hat einen Ölverbrauch von Null und eine signifikante Reduzierung der co2-Emission erreicht.

Heating and cooling a house with innovative design using solar energy in heating and cooling and solar system along with en-ergy fireplaces and solid fuel boiler or pellet

Kikis Energy Systems SA manufactures solar systems and do-mestic heating appliances for solid fuel boilers and individual units, enamels equipment and components, plants photovoltaic installations of solar cooling buildings and providing domestic hot water as well as photovoltaic installations. It also applies innovative solutions to installations in buildings involving solar heat and solar cooling in combination with the existing structure of the building.The main structure of the project is the use of solar energy as a primary mean of heating and cooling the house, using innovative methods and devices along with specific techniques to increase the gain of solar radiation energy. The combination of electric-ity, photovoltaic systems and solid fuel appliances as assistive devices to complete and use the discharged energy, leads us to an intelligent system which covers the needs of heating, and cooling and the needs of hot water for a house, ridding it com-pletely of oil use.

kIkIS ENERGY SYSTEMSsolar heaTing and cooling sysTem

The project focuses on improving certain rates of classic solar radiation systems using intelligent and innovative methods of treatment and also on using fully automate appliances.The innovative construction of the conventional solar collector produces satisfactory gain due to the combined insulating cas-ing and the innovative one-piece manufacture. The construction of the reservoir is focused on its insulation and on the use of special salts which increase the heat capacity. The intelligent combination of automation use and better use of the devices along with the rational use of energy at low levels do not require high temperatures and therefore there are lower losses of its use.applying the absorption system, the device for solar cooling achieves low energy consumption regarding the traffic, and zero consumption of energy is required for cooling, ensuring the lon-gevity of the system with slightest electricity consumption. finally, the photovoltaic system provides income to the owners of the house. The main goal of this project is to provide the needed energy to a household in a way that the basic costs of heating and cooling are significantly reduced. the project also aims for creating a system of heating and cooling with smart

and innovative methods by using mainly solar energy both to new constructions and to renovated buildings with existing heating and cooling systems.

The strategic framework for the development of the proposal included the use of already existing manufacturing methods re-garding the development of the solar collector and the reservoir. It also included the development of a manufacturing coopera-tion between Kikis company, a German company and the t.e.I. of Western Macedonia, aiming at the development of solar heating and especially the device of solar cooling. The system can operate for many years with minimal mainte-nance. therefore, it really contributes to the actual energy au-tonomy of a building. The sustainability of the system is thus ensured.

The impact of the system has positive results to the company’s customers, but also to suppliers. the rising demand and the ef-ficiency of the system, creates an expectation for even greater sales and consequently even greater turnovers, both to custom-ers and suppliers.

Kikis Energy Systems erialaks on hoone innovatiivsete kütte- ja venti-latsioonisüsteemide paigaldamine. Auhinnatud tööks on ettevõtte poolt loodud eramaja kütte - ja ventilatsioonisüsteem, mis kombineerib päikese-paneelid kamina ja tahke kütuse boileriga. The growing number of world population and and the increase of the demand of fossil fuels are the causes of a worldwide en-ergy problem. the high price of the fossil fuels, the dependency of many countries on them and the aggressive environmental impact of their use, such as the climate change, promote the search of new solutions. there are different strategies to ac-complish this problem, such as increasing process efficiency, re-ducing consumptions or implementing renewable technologies. The presented innovative product deals with this third option.Solar power is the most abundant and renewable resource that we have and ECOmESS solar panels make the most of it. In order to explain the great advantages the ecoMess panels pro-vide in both financial and environmental terms, we must first understand the ECOmESS technology. The equipment for gener-ating electricity from the sun is the photovoltaic module, which is formed from photovoltaic cells, with them 15% of the sun´s energy is converted to electricity. The remainder of the energy is lost as heat by solar panels. When the modules are exposed to solar radiation, the surface temperature of the panel rises and the electricity output drops. In hybrid systems as ecoMess, a heat recovery under the photovoltaic modules transferred the heat from the panels to it. In this way, the photovoltaic efficiency

is greatly improved and the heat can be used to the other re-quirements. The capture of both electricity and heat allow these devices to be more overall energy efficient than solar photovol-taic or solar thermal alone. however, ecoMess panel even delivers more energy and ben-efits than the conventional hybrid panels. the reason is that they include a transparent Insulation cover (tIc), which increases the quantity of heat that can be removed by the recovery. The TIC contains an inert gas and the correct selection of the contained gas reduces the natural convection heat losses. The cover is a piece of glass hermetically seal to the photovoltaic module. This way, an incredible production of heat and electricity is achieved and consequently an amazing efficiency of operation efficiency.The main and great advantages of the ECOmESS panels can be summarized in the following points:

as it is well known, currently in spain the economic situation is difficult and the incentives of the renewable energies have been eliminated. nevertheless, this product offers the great advan-tage that is profitable without incentives. looking to europe, the situation is better since almost all countries that utilize solar en-ergy for power generation have policies specific to solar energy that favors the commercialization of these products. moreover european regulations like 2002/97-ce (the integration of re-newable in buildings) or 2010/31/ue, that promote the effort to achieve the objectives of efficiency in europe (20-20-20), sup-port this kind of products.The potential market for ECOmESS panels lies in both the resi-dential and industry sector. Particularly promising markets are low energy high solar fraction houses, where ecoMess panels can be combined with a heat pump, and multi-family buildings, that typically have a very limited available roof area. Moreover, several niche markets exist as collective tap water systems for campgrounds, sports, homes for the elderly, hospitals and ho-tels, pool heating for (public) swimming pools, autonomous sys-tems. In the industrial sector, with high energy consumptions, ecoMess panels offer a great opportunity to drastically reduce the cost of the bills and increase the competitiveness of the company. The panels can be incorporated into the production process by supplying heat to low and medium temperature and electricity. ecoMess is commercialized by endef enginnering, which was founded in June of 2012 in saragossa. the main team is formed by young, talented and dedicated engineers. endef ´s activities are related to renewable energy and the commercialization of its own hybrid panel ecoMess. Moreover, endef offers several audits services and energetic certification. after several years of research work, endef has already launched two patents for this product presented.

Epic Power is a recently founded private company based in Zaragoza, spain. the company is a spin-off of the university of Zaragoza and the vision is to design, develop, produce and sell energy recovery systems that store this energy for reutilization by the system. our first and main product in June 2013 is the eRs P3K, a market-driven high-tech system that makes existing or new elevators more efficient and reduces consumption.

The ERS P3k is a 3kW power rated Energy Recovery System (thus the name) that can be added to any elevator that is controlled by a frequency variable drive (most of the modern elevators are). The great advantage of our product is that it is plug-and-play and can be used to retrofit existing installations. It can also be used in brand new ones. Many lifts incorporate a counterweight. When the elevator goes down relatively full (weighing more than the counterweight) or goes up relatively empty (weighting less than the counterweight), the motor that moves the lift is acting as a generator. nowadays, except in very few exceptions, this generated energy is dissipated as heat in what is known as a braking resistor. Our ERS P3k transforms this energy in a very efficient way and stores it in an ultracapacitor module. this is similar to a battery, only better for this particular application due to high peak powers. The same system reuses this stored energy when the elevator motor requires. Not only we reduce consump-tion but also the peak power needed to operate is smoothed. Depending on the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the whole system, the eRs P3k can reduce up to 35% the energy consumption of the lift.

the advantage compared to the only existing open market op-tions to make elevators more efficient (the regenerative variable frequency drives) are the following: energy is not returned to the grid, it is stored and reused. Regen-erating to the grid means that unless a bidirectional contract is feasible, there is no actual savings for the user. The peak power consumption is reduced; the contract with the energy provider can be simplified.
