Internships

The Career Center acts as a clearing house for advertising internships. Internships are one-semester work experiences which provide students with the opportunity to gain career-related skills in a real-world work setting. They also provide employers an opportunity to observe the intern’s performance, with the possibility of future employment. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may be considered for academic credit. For an internship to count as academic credit they must be coordinated through the student’s academic department, supervised by a faculty member, and the student must be enrolled in a formal internship course. The Career Center does not administer formal internship programs nor offer academic credit for internships. Students and employers must coordinate this through the student’s academic department.

Page 10: Employer Brochure new cover 6.25

The University’s Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program is administered by the Career Center. Co-op Employers provide on-site training opportunities which are directly related to a student’s major. Students are paid by their employer, receive a grade from their Co-op Instructor, and receive recognition on their official transcript for the participation in Co-op. Therefore, Co-op is an academic course and must follow the academic calendar.

There are many benefits to participating in Co-op: Employers are able to choose from a pre-screened list of candidates Only candidates with excellent academic records who have proven their desire and ability to gain real world experience are admitted into the Co-op program Students are invested in succeeding in their Co-op experience because they will be receiving a grade along with experience and professional development Employers will be able to establish a pipeline of highly motivated new professionals for their organization, which can help build a stronger and more capable future workforce Employers will create brand awareness for their organization on campus amongst the students that they wish to hire

Student Testimonial

Level Joseph, MIS “Utilizing the Career Center's cooperative education program I found a position as a Web Communications Support Student with Seminole Electric Cooperative. Through this position I gained experience in my major that I can apply to any future positions. The counselors at the Career Center were helpful and insightful when assisting me with my resume and interview skills. They are a definite factor in aiding my success in finding an internship and to my professional maturation. I'm thankful for their services.”

What is Co-op? And How it Differs from Internships

Internships can vary in length. The Career

Center does not administer a concurrent

course, but students can discuss the option

of obtaining academic credit with their major

department.

Internships can be paid or unpaid, but

employers must comply with all laws and pay

special attention to the Department of Labor

standards for unpaid internships.

Applicants are not from a prescreened

candidate pool.

Students are not required to register for a

course to do an internship. Thus, a grade for

the internship experience will not show up

on a student’s transcript unless a student has

been given permission from his/her major

department to enroll in academic credit for

the internship. Requirements for the

department’s internship course may be

different than those required for Co-op.

The Career Center does not coordinate the

approval process for a student who wants to

receive credit for an internship.

Students determine how many internship

hours they will work with the employer that

will become their supervisor.

Students should not be on academic

probation, so they should have a 2.0 GPA or

higher.

There is no requirement that a student must

declare a major. Any curriculum

requirements are decided on by the

employer.

Cooperative Education is a semester-long course with an academic component taught on-line that is administered by the USF Career Center while the student is accumulating practical on-site training with an employer.

It is a formal course which allows students to

gain paid, real world training in their chosen career field.

Employers will recruit from a prescreened

candidate pool. Students from this pool have been required to tailor their application materials using the USF Career Center’s standards.

Students who receive and accept a Co-op

training offer, will be required to register for a Co-op Course which is for “0” credit and is graded “S” or “U” (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory).

Co-op will appear on the student’s transcript

each semester they participate in Co-op. Co-op students can choose from an

alternating plan and train 35 – 40 hours a week or a parallel plan and train 15 – 25 hours a week.

Students must have a min. 2.5 GPA and have

completed a min. of 45 hours of coursework. Students must have declared a major and be

accepted into their academic department.

Cooperative Education Vs. Internships

Page 12: Employer Brochure new cover 6.25

Cooperative Education Vs. Internships

Our Expectations of Employers for Co-Op

• Provide on-the-job training for the designated training

period.

• Supervision of daily work performance. An initial sit-down at the beginning of the term to determine 3 learning objectives for the student to accomplish during that semester

• Provide on-going mentoring and feedback throughout the semester

• Completion of a final evaluation, provided by the student, at the end of the training period that reviews the students work performance and skill development

Like what you see? Follow these steps to become a Co-op employer:

1. Register with us through Career Connections and indicate in the Co-op

Education Agreement that you would like to participate (the agreement

is included in your Career Connections registration).

2. Post your Co-op position via Career Connections with a position type of

Co-op only. You should also include “Co-op” at the end of the job title.

3. Contact/respond to students from the Co-op candidate pool you’re

interested in and set up interviews.

4. Once you hire a student, notify the Career Center so we can deactivate

your listing and start the process of getting the student registered for

the course.

Each semester the Career Center coordinates numerous fairs and events related to employers recruitment efforts. These events can assist you in finding

qualified candidates and branding your organization on campus.

“Prepare for the Fair” events: Events are held the week prior to the Career Networking Fair each semester to prepare students for the fair. Employers are invited to present a career topic. This is a great recruitment strategy for organizations who would like to increase their visibility on campus prior to the fair.

Statewide Job Fair: This event is coordinated by all of the Florida state universities and is held in mid-May at the University of Central Florida.

Have a great idea for an event you would like to host on campus? Tell us about it! We are always looking for fun and innovative events to host with

employers on campus.

Events on Campus

Career Fairs: There are several fairs that take place throughout the year, including the Career Networking Fair, which is a campus-wide career fair for organizations hiring for full-time, co-op, and internship opportunities held once per semester, the Internship & Part-Time Job Fair, which provides organizations with an opportunity to meet with potential candidates for internship, part-time and/or summer employment held each semester, and the Public Service Career Fair, held in the spring to provide employers from government, health care, law enforcement, non-profit and other public service organizations the opportunity to discuss their employment. All events are open to all USF students and alumni.

4202 E Fowler Ave SVC 2088 Tampa, FL 33620-6930 Ph. (813) 974-2171

USF Career Center Policies – Third Party Employers

Right to Refuse: The Career Center reserves the right to deny access and participation to any third party employer.

Third Party Employers The University of South Florida Career Center works with selected Third Party Employment Services (TPES), doing business as a direct employer or as contractor with the direct hiring employer, to provide students access to their employment opportunities. Since the Career Center can neither research nor endorse TPES agencies, guidelines have been established for the protection of students and alumni. The Career Center, using due diligence, ensures to the best of its ability that third party employers participating in recruitment are operating as an employer as well as adhering to NACE state and federal ethical and legal recruitment standards and principles.

Definition of third-party employer: Third-party employers are agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for profit or not-for-profit, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment.

POLICY Any TPES that is not defined as an employer (see definition above) is not eligible to use career center recruitment services. However, these TPES may send a job listing for inclusion in a Third Party Employer Notebook, maintained in the career library. • TPES that charge a fee to the candidate will make them ineligible to use any recruitment service • Any TPES agency that is recruiting to fill their own agency position; will have the same access to recruitment services

as any other direct hiring employer. • Any TPES that is the direct hiring party (temporary or staffing service) or contracted to work as or provide a service to

the direct hiring party (outsourcing contractors or leasing agents)is eligible to use all career center recruitment services.

• Before any TPES may advertise a position for one of their clients they must identify the employer client to the Career Center. The name of the employer client must be listed in the job advertisement. The advertisement must also clearly indicate that the candidate will be working through a third party agency. If the TPES does not release this information or is unwilling to make the employer client name pubic, the position will not be advertised. Under no circumstances will positions be advertised for which a direct employer has interviewed or plans to interview candidates through the Career Center’s on-campus interview program or has already posted the position with the Career Center.

• TPES must agree to the following before being allowed to use any recruitment service: • NO fees will be charged to the candidate(s) at any time throughout the employment process. • That they and the client organization they represent is an equal opportunity employer. • Information about the candidate(s) will be distributed ONLY to the client organization of the position being

advertised and will not be referred to other positions and/or client organizations. • Will disclose to students the name(s) of the client, or clients, that the third-party recruiter is representing and

to whom the students' credentials will be disclosed. • Third-party recruiters will not disclose to any employer, including the client-employer, any student

information without obtaining prior written consent from the student. Under no circumstances can student information be disclosed for other than the original recruiting purposes nor can it be sold or provided to other entities.

• Third-party recruiters attending career fairs will represent employers who have authorized them to recruit on their behalf and will disclose to career services the names of the represented client employers.

Any reported breach of these policies and/or agreement will result in de-activation of the TPES on-line account and termination of access to all recruitment services.

USF Career Center Policies

On-Campus Interview Policy Only direct hiring organizations, seeking candidates for internships, Cooperative Education, and full-time employment (requiring a degree) may conduct scheduled on-campus interviews. The Career Center does not establish the hiring qualifications for the hiring organization. Employers must adhere to equal employment opportunity laws and principles for employment professionals as outlined in the National Association of College & Employers' Principles for Professional Conduct for Career Services and Employment Professionals. Employers may choose an Open and/or Pre-select interview schedule The Career Center, through Career Connections, will allow only those candidates with matching qualifications to apply for and schedule an on-campus interview with the hiring organization. On-campus interviews are conducted in the Career Center, 8:30-4:00, Monday – Friday, except for official University holidays. Employers may schedule the interview time that best complements their interview process. The Career Center reserves the right to refuse any direct hiring organization from participation in on-campus interviews. Employers having any “upfront” fees, training or product purchases must disclose this in the job description prior to the interview. Employers must note if the position for which they are hiring is unpaid and optional for credit in the job description, prior to the interview. Right to Refuse: The Career Center reserves the right to refuse the on-campus interview service to

student/alumni, hiring organization and/or individual recruiter.
