I am pleased to announce that Delta Air Lineshas decided to continue both the third Atlantanon-stop that was added this spring, while re-taining the Minneapolis/St. Paul non-stop ight

throughout the coming year. Both ights were originally set to stop in Sep-

tember, but due to strong support rom the FortWayne community, Delta believes both theseights will per orm well during the historicallyslow period FWA experiences between Novemberand February. Tanks or your continuing sup-port.

Overall, FWA enplanements have ared well so

ar in 2011, but the cost o uel has been prevent-ing expansion rom occurring, not only at FWA,but throughout practically all domestic airports.

Tere have been exceptions, o course, but the

return to the ight levels o just a couple o yearsago is still most likely a ew years of. But the suc-cess o retaining new ights past their expectedtermination dates, speaks volumes when airlineplanners look to the uture.

Tis has been a huge year or LinkedIn. In March, the site reached 100 million members, and in May,LinkedIn became the rst major social media siteto go public.

Even as LinkedIn makes headlines, however, many users arent sure what all the uss is about.Tey sign up, create a pro le, add a ew connec-tions and thenwell, or many, thats the end o the story. Tey simply cant see why LinkedIn de-serves their attention.

Te truth is, LinkedIn is an incredibly power ultool or anyone whose success depends upon their

pro essional relationships.Whether youre looking to grow in your career,

grow your business, or make a name or yoursel in an industry or a niche, LinkedIn can help youreach your goals.

o make the most o your time, there are a ewimportant principles to remember:

Connect only with those you knowMany people measure their social media suc-

cess based on the number o connections, riendsor ollowers they have. Quality, however, is muchmore important than quantity and this is espe-cially true on LinkedIn.

Connect only with those you have already donebusiness with, or with whom you have mutualtrust. In doing so, youll spend more time enhanc-ing the relationships that matter most instead o spreading yoursel too thin.

Tink o it as truly connecting with people, in-stead o simply adding up the numbers as a meanso simply collecting people.

Update your status at least once a week Many LinkedIn users believe their pro le is the

key to their success on LinkedIn, but its not asvaluable as one o the simplest eatures on Linke-

dIn: the status update. When you update your status on LinkedIn, it

automatically appears in your contacts news eed the rst thing they see when they log on. Tatsanother chance or your contacts to think o youand better understand what you do.

Te key is to keep the conversation ocused on

your pro essional li e and to use the status update judiciously. Update it no more than once a day, butno less than once a week.

Be a resource to your connections As it is with real-world networking, LinkedIn

is most efective when you use it to help others.Dont overtly sell your product or service; instead, understand what your audience needs and whatyou can do or them.

LinkedIn provides ample opportunities to doso: responding to questions using eatures suchas LinkedIn Answers, participating in Groups orsimply sharing insight and advice rom your areao expertise.

Once you establish yoursel as a trusted resource, your audience will be eager to connect with you.

As LinkedIn continues to grow, it will only be-come more power ul.

I youre not already a LinkedIn member, now isa great time to join. And i youre already a mem-ber, consider investing more time on LinkedIn. Your pro le is just the beginning, and the oppor-tunities are almost endless.

Te Greater Fort Wayne Chamber o Commercehas launched the newly redesigned web site, www.wchamber.org, on July 1. Fort Wayne rm o King & Knight was selected by Te Greater FortWayne Chamber o Commerce to create and de-sign its new web site.

We are excited to have a web site up that is moreappealing to members, said Michael Landram, chairman and CEO o Te Chamber. We tookinto account the challenges our members acedwith our ormer web site and believe we have re-sponded to those concerns with the new one.

Te new web site will be easier to use or Cham-ber members, visitors and Chamber staf. Among

A revamped community calendar. A new eature has been added or Chamber

ease o uselocal business and believes this decision exempli-es that, Landram said. Mikes reputation in theweb design industry and his ties to our communitymade King & Knight a great t.

King & Knight is a digital agency located in FortWayne. Established in January, King & Knightprovides web design, web development, mobiledevelopment, and custom so tware applicationsor individuals to corporate enterprises. King &Knight can be ound on the web at www.kingand-knight.com.

Te ounder, Mike King, has more than veyears o experience in computer in ormation sys-tems. He graduated rom IU Bloomingtons Kelley

School o Business with a concentration in Com-puter In ormation Systems. King was named tothe 2010 class o Te Greater Fort Wayne BusinessWeeklys 40 Under 40.

Te Chamber will host training sessions to helpits members ully grasp all the tools the new siteofers.

As a nonpro t, it is vital that every dollar spentbe put to its best possible use. Programs that ul llthe nonpro t mission are not always adequatelyunded even while the demand or services contin-ues to grow.

Research by the Georgia Center or Nonpro tshas ound that nonpro ts are aced with a trou-bling equation: For every $1 spent on materials,$11 must be earned via undraising to pay or it.Its based on that conundrum that the BuyWith-PQC Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) pre-sented our savings options and guidance duringthe July 13 Nonpro t Summit geared to help non-pro ts save money on items they need every day.

Te bene t o using a GPO includes cost andtime savings. Nonpro ts have a mission, andspending time searching or bargains takes valu-able people in your organization away rom com-pleting that mission.

Looking or low prices isnt the only time-con-suming aspect o getting the best goods and ser-vices. You also want to be sure youre dealing witha reputable company.

At a reputable GPO, suppliers have earned theirplace through a competitive vetting process. Costanalysis, quality analysis, due diligence, and re er-ence checks are required to success ully investi-

gate a supplier. Finally, a great GPO conducts benchmarkingto ensure the prices ofered by the suppliers arecompetitive. Only then can a GPO ofer savingsthrough exemplary suppliers.

Te result? You have more time to ocus on yourorganizations goals. Te best part is that thesesavings could come at no cost to your nonpro t.BuyWithPQC has established a strong procure-ment process using industry standards.

As Chamber members, your nonpro t agency isalready enrolled in BuyWithPQC, and you can be-gin taking advantage o its bene ts immediately. On July 13, the BuyWithPQC team presented aone-hour session on how to apply basic strategicpurchasing processes or continued expense sav-ings.

We know this subject continues to resonatewithin the Chamber and we will continue to lookor additional expense saving programs to presentuture training sessions or our members.

For this months article, I asked my abulous intern,Sarah, to write an article about her experience in FortWayne so ar. Shes been here or about a month nowand I wanted to know what her thoughts were aboutFort Wayne. Here is what she wrote:

By Sarah Plew As an Indianapolis area native, my rst experi-

ence with Northeast Indiana came when I movedinto Manchester College as a reshman three yearsago.

My initial reaction was shock due to the seem-ingly never-ending corn elds and the accompany-ing unpleasant odor o pig arms.

Nevertheless, the town quickly ound a placein my heart, and when I was given the opportu-nity to stay through the summer to intern or theGraduate Retention Program at the Fort WayneChamber o Commerce, I jumped at the chance too cially call the area my home.

My rst two weeks working in Fort Wayne, I gotlost twelve times. Tat is not an exaggeration.

Ten I learned and ound a map to maneuver theone-way streets, but the city started construction, closed roads, and the act remains that I am stillgetting lost to this day.

Every time I come back rom my lunch breakrustrated because I lost my way again, one o myco-workers smiles and says cheer ully, See it asanother adventure exploring the city!

And through the aggravation and discom ort o being the pathetic, wayward girl in a strange place, this is exactly what made me begin to love it here:the small-town riendliness o the people in themidst o what I expected to be an impersonal, cha-otic city.

With my internship in the Graduate RetentionProgram at the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber o

Commerce, I am able to attend numerous eventsthroughout the community and to get to know the

people who make this place so charming.Te Live, Learn and Intern series has allowed me

to visit Indiana ech or bowling and pizza, TeFoellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, andShoaf Park or a cookout. We also played volley-ball at Rivercity, attended a inCaps game, tooka tour o Sweetwater Sound, and picnicked at thezoo.

Even outside o the Live, Learn, and Internevents, I have eagerly taken advantage o my timeto get to know Fort Wayne.

I participated in German est, Rib est, and Greek-est who knew there were so many estivals? andam slowly making my way through many o the lo-cal restaurants. What persistently surprises me isthe warm reception I receive no matter where I goin this city.

Im not sure what I expected out o my intern-ship in Fort Wayne. Maybe I just anticipated asense o accomplishment and a checkmark on mylist.

What this has turned into, though, is a continualcycle o li e-changing experiences and an increas-ing ondness or a city that in my childhood I con-sidered ordinary. It makes me wonder how manyother people overlook the wonder that this cityreally is.

So get out o the house, explore, and get lost. You never know what you might discover.

I hope Sarahs experience is one that many internshave (minus the getting lost all the time part o course). I you had to describe your experience withthe Chamber thus ar using one word, what

would it be?Serendipitous. Initially, I came to the Chamberon a project basis to document procedures in thenance department. In the process, I discoveredthat the Chamber was involved in the communitywith unique programs and activities in ways that Iwas not aware o .

What does your job entail as the controllerand how has your past employment preparedyou or the work you will be doing with theChamber?

Te job description includes oversight o the -nancial activities which includes nancial report-ing, budgeting, orecasts, HR and bene ts over-sight and all o the related lings and audits or theChamber and Foundation. I started my accountingcareer as an auditor or Ernst and Young and havesince worked in a variety o industries includingmanu acturing, healthcare and publishing/ ul ll-ment services. My past employment has given mea broad range o experience and resources that willcertainly be use ul in this position.

In your ree time, what are you most likely tobe ound doing?

I have a diverse mix o interests and enjoy the

opportunity to learn something new. So, in myree time I could be ound traveling, cooking, read-ing, attending an art show or riding one o theareas bike trails.

When you were a young girl, what did youwant to be when you grew up (and why)?

Growing up, I was involved in 4-H and discov-ered a passion or cooking. I had aspirations orowning a restaurant. A ter working many nightsand weekends as a restaurant manager, I deter-mined cooking at home or amily and riends pe-riodically could be an equally good option.

What are some o the challenges as theController?

Like many o our members, one o the big chal-lenges is trying to nd ways to get the most romour resources. So, I will be looking at ways that wecan be more e cient and timely in accomplishingour nance goals.

Is there anything you think more membersshould know about the Chamber that theymay not realize?

I was surprised to discover the variety o waysthe Chamber provides or the community. In look-ing at some o the activities over the past coupleo months, the mix has included ech Fest, a leg-islative wrap up break ast, a number o seminarson topics rom social media to elder law and travelis on the horizon with a trip to China coming uplater this all.

How do you maintain balance in your work?Maintaining balance hasnt always been one o

my strengths but I have learned to be intentionalabout how I use my time. Whether theres snow or

sun, good balance or me starts with taking timeevery day or exercise and the outdoors.

Favorite place to visit outside Fort Wayne?I love to travel and am ortunate to have many

avorite places. On my visits, I look or places thathave a vibrant mix o nature and art such as SantaFe, Napa Valley and Lake Louise in the CanadianRockies.

What advice would you give to new membersto help them get the most out o theChamber?

I would suggest they have an expectation orwhat membership can mean or them and they getinvolved. Tere are many bene ts available to ourmembers. I they arent sure what their member-ship provides, they need to make it a priority tond out. We have a pro essional staf that wouldbe able to help them and the new website is a greatresource that can be used at their convenience.

Our new controllerAbout DebBoydDeb is the new controlleror Te Greater FortWayne Chamber o Commerce.
