The GreatestWork on Earth

In 1919 the Sisters of Notre Dame deNamur, an international Catholic religiouscongregation, founded Emmanuel College, the first Catholic college for women in NewEngland. With their mission of “makingknown God’s goodness...educating for life,”they laid the foundation for generations ofbright, motivated students to apply theprinciples established by founder St. JulieBilliart. Today, the men and women thatcomprise the Emmanuel communitycontinue to carry out the mission of theSisters of Notre Dame through education, social justice and a longstanding traditionof service to the Boston community, nationally and globally.

Chris Borges ’10, originally from New Jersey, has spent

three years working with Dr. Josef Kurtz, Assistant

Professor of Biology, on bone marrow transplant research

at the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital.

“Over the past year, some of theresearch that Chris has beeninvolved with has been accepted forpresentation at international meetings, where scientists have been able to seethe work that is being done atEmmanuel College, by EmmanuelCollege students. Through his work withme in the lab, he has gained a deeperunderstanding for how science getsdone, and being a part of the research

“I saw Dr. Kurtz give a talk on hisresearch during Accepted StudentVisit Day. That was all it took for meto become fascinated by his work.Through our research, we look at waysto make the treatment regimen for abone marrow transplant less toxic. Not many undergraduate students getto have the experience that I have had.It has provided me opportunities in thefield that I never thought possible.”

Merck Research Laboratories-Boston

Emmanuel is the only college in the countrywith a private research facility located righton its campus. Since Merck ResearchLaboratories-Boston opened its doors inOctober 2004, this unique partnershiphas provided our students with the typeof access and opportunities fewundergraduates get to experience. Eachsummer, Merck selects students to takepart in a special paid internship program,at least one of which is always anEmmanuel student. Through the MerckScholars Program, Emmanuel students areawarded scholarships based on outstandingacademic performance in the sciences. In addition to Merck researchers andscientists speaking in our monthly seminarseries, the pharmaceutical companysupports our faculty-student researchinitiatives, provides student stipends forsummer research projects, and givesthe College access to cutting-edgeresearch equipment.

Samuel LoCascio (Vienna, Austria) andYnes Helou (Foxborough, MA) Class of2009, were selected as Merck summerinterns for 2008.

“ I have always aspired to work with greatminds and partake in influential research. My time as a Merck intern certainlyprovided me that chance. After I graduatefrom Emmanuel, I intend to focus mystudies in pharmacology, so the internshipheld great relevance to my future academiccareer. Getting the opportunity to work in apharmaceutical company that hascontributed so much to human healthis priceless.”

Ynes

“ It was exciting to be able to apply all that Iam learning as an Emmanuel Collegestudent to a job where my work could makea big difference. The experience I gainedduring my internship with Merck wasextremely valuable, but it was because ofmy education at Emmanuel that I was giventhe opportunity in the first place. There arevery few colleges that provide the kind ofopportunities and support that we receiveas students here.”

“Take some risks in your collegecareer,” urges Dr. St. Clair, “nomatter how serious you are aboutscience, while you’re here, take acourse in something you’re notgoing to be able to do again.”

For more than 30 years, Dr. St. Clairhas urged Emmanuel students topursue both a disciplined analysisin science and an open curiosity inthe world at large. He believes astrong liberal arts education isfundamentally about thinking. Hepushes students to challengeassumptions, to question.

“ Why do people act a certain way?Why is a building built that way?How did it happen that thispresident was elected rather than

Our distinguished faculty publishes, exhibits and researches.Presents, composes and chairs. Inspires, stimulates and collaborates. AtEmmanuel, classes are small enough for your professors to know who you areand what’s important to you. They expect you to challenge them, to think, toquestion, to explore. Their mission is to make knowledge matter. Whether theyteach English or Management, Biostatistics or Education, they believe in thepromise of a liberal arts and sciences education to transform students intoconfident, curious citizens of the world of ideas.

Here are a handful of professors you might run into on a stroll across the quad:

that one? Did Freud destroy morethings in the 20th century than hecreated?” he challenges, “This ismore than data to be mastered andfiled away.”

“ Psychology is a pretty broad disci-pline,” says Dr. St. Clair, “At itsmost basic, it offers good habits ofresearch, critical thinking, exposureto quantitative methods and skillsfor jobs.”

At the same time he celebrates thedistinctive opportunities Emmanuelhas to offer, “Our psychology classesare quite different from each other. We have moved quite rapidly intomany demanding sub-disciplinesof psychology, including theneurosciences.”

Artist, Professor, Advisor.Megumi Naitoh is all three to thestudents of Emmanuel College. After growing up in Tokyo, sur-rounded by 12.5 million otherpeople, Dr. Naitoh takes the art ofindividual expression quite seriously. But she teaches it with a sense ofhumor and tremendous passion.

As you might expect from an artistwhose work combines manipulatedpixilated images and clay, sheteaches students to articulate whythey like what they make. “Withoutknowing why it is successful, it isnot successful,” she says.

With the recently renovated ArtDepartment, Dr. Naitoh has anentirely new art space in whichto guide students towards thecreation of their next masterpiece.Located on the fifth floor of theAdministration Building, the areaincludes new studios for painting,

drawing, 3D graphics and ceramics;a wood shop; a dark room; a Maccomputer lab; and other gallery andinteractive spaces to help her piquestudents’ creativity.

Boston enriches the entire experi-ence as well. One day, she’s takingstudents through the Museum ofFine Arts, experiencing art mostpeople see only in books, the nextshe’s guiding them to a galleryopening in Boston’s Harrison Avenueart district.

“All history is based on decisionshuman beings have made,” saysDr. Marion. “In college, History ismore than dates and names, it islearning to analyze and understandthose decisions.”

Dr. Marion debunks the myth ofthe aloof professor with his easymanner and a quick smile. He findsthat students come to Emmanuelready to learn and eager for theexperience. “For some students it’sactually easier to do well in collegethan it was in high school,” hesays. “There are more choices inthe curriculum, and students findthe intensity of the discussion ismore invigorating.”

He, in turn, is energized by theirintensity. “Students who come toEmmanuel want to do somethingwith what they learn. They aregenuinely outraged by injustice,”he says. “It creates a contagiousempathy.”

This fits Dr. Marion’s teaching styleperfectly. “We encourage studentsto make connections betweenthemselves and what they learn, rather than just sit and becomefattened by information.”

“ Bring your own context to college,”he promises, “and together we willchallenge traditional thinking. Wewill reframe old ideas, skew themif you will, until they lead us toanswers we wouldn’t normally find.”

of History

“I don’t want their minds to begated communities,” says SisterMary of her students. “I will doanything I can to take down thegates. I teach two Service Learningcourses and the transformation Isee in the students is inspiring.”

SOC2113, Research Methods, isone. This class went out among 25ethnic parishes in the Archdioceseof Boston—from Ugandan toVietnamese, from German toKorean—to collect data. Theyconducted interviews with membersof the communities and mademultiple visits to the churches. “Theconfidence my students get betweenthe first day of class and the lastis amazing. They’re diving intothe deep end of the pool,” SisterMary says.

Service learning builds bridgesbetween commitment and action.Emmanuel students are encouragedto articulate their social conscious-

ness. They may help feed the poorin homeless shelters or make adifference by working at theMassachusetts State House. The campus is alive with a realcommitment to social justice.

“ After I make the bridges,” saysSister Mary, “the students initiatetheir own versions. They embracewhat they want to do in light of theirown interests and talents.”

“ We spark the fire,” says SisterMary,“ but the students keep itburning.”
