G321 FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO

Attracting and addressing my audience.

Page 2: Emily snape media question 5

This is my front cover for my music magazine.

•I have used a bold, solid and chunky house style font; this will attract my target audience because it is easy to identify and it also makes everything stand out more than if it was a thin, serif font.•My Masthead is bold and has been stretched across the top of the magazine- this attracts the attention of the target audience faster because it is placed in the top 1/3 of the magazine, it will be easily noticeable in a magazine rack.•I have used a variety of different, primary colours to make the cover lines dominant. I incorporated the colours from the British flag to create my colour scheme; therefore I have used the red to make “FREE” stand out which my target audience said they look for things to win and things that are free on a magazine. I have used the blue for the secondary lead so that it stand out more than the other covers lines and I have used yellow on the less important words; however I used it on words that I wanted to highlight, not emphasise.•For my image I made sure that eye contact was an element of impact; this is because my target audience would be more attracted to look at the magazine front cover. Also his look of attitude creates an attraction for my target audience as this is what my target audience is meant to be addressed as.•I have used a circular British flag to create shape and structure to my magazine. I have made the cover look slightly busy as my target audience are more attracted to busy front covers, rather than minimal cover lines and a small Masthead.•I have used a small amount of quote for my key cover line to ‘get to the point’ of what his story is about; I have chosen to do this because my target audience are more likely to read the smaller amount of information rather than a huge chunk of quotes.

This is my contents page for my music magazine.• I have used many of the key conventions for a

contents page. I have continued to maintain the house style with the fonts and colour schemes. This is because I wanted to sustain the thread between the front cover, keeping the brand identity. This attracts the target audience because the bright primary colours makes everything dominant and makes key words stand out and highlights key aspects that I wanted to be noticed.

• I have used images to structure the page as they spread out from the bottom right hand corner; this gives the audience time to find what they want to read and it separates all the two different sections ‘on the front cover’ and ‘continue inside’.

• I have used a lot of boxes to separate and create more different sections such as the ‘plus box’, this will help my target audience get a small ‘jist’ of what is expected in the magazine.

• I have used coverlines which relate to the target audience, such as ‘win an iPhone’ as this is a gadget the majority of my target audience want, I decided this would be the best prize they would like to win.

• I have used the same front throughout, keeping the house style; this helps achieve the brand identity, and it is also a lot easier for the target audience to read.

• I have used captions to anchor the images and I have varied the shot types of my photos, for example; long shot, mid-shot staring away, mid-shot staring at the camera and another mid-shot using a musical prop.

This is my double page spread for my music magazine.•For the main image for my double page

spread I decided to use the A4 image because he looks so relaxed in his own home, it backs up the storyline about his life style- other aspects that do this are: his normal, everyday clothing, the posters in the background represent his musical aspirations (people he looks up too possibly) and as he is sat on his own bed it reinforces the stereotypical teenage life style. •The bold, chunky writing, yet again attracts my target audience because it is modern and easy to read. •The modern colour scheme would attract my target audience because they are more likely to look at something clean and simplistic, rather than messy, fancy and full of different colours.•The use of images on the page would attract the reader because of the questionnaire feedback I got, declaring that they prefer imagery over information. •I have made sure that it is easily readable and laid out with a structure of two columns; this is so that my target audience can read it without any stress.
