Diversity at Arnold & Porter LLPDiversity is a deeply engrained core value and strategic priority at Arnold & Porter LLP. We are dedicated to fostering an environment in which all individuals have meaningful opportunities to grow, contribute and realize their full potential. We take seriously our commitment to manage the Firm in a way that treats every person with dignity and respect; eschews stereotypes, unfair generalizations and insensitivity; and embraces diverse perspectives and ideas as strategic goals.

We are committed to a diverse work force. Here are just a few of our diversity initiatives:

n Our firm-wide Diversity Committee, on which our Chair and Managing Partner serve, advises the Firm on diversity issues.

n All of our new colleagues — at all levels within the Firm — must attend diversity training. The program increases sensitivity to and awareness of diversity issues, and fosters a hospitable work environment for all employees, no matter what their background.

n We support the activities of affinity groups, including Minorities at Arnold & Porter (MAP), Women Lawyers of Arnold & Porter (WLAP), the LGBT affinity group, and Arnold & Porter Veterans and Affiliates (APVA), all of which actively participate in recruiting, mentoring, support, retention and professional development of diverse attorneys.

n We provide diversity scholarships at law schools, including schools in many of the cities where we have offices, to help promote diversity in the legal profession.

Thank you for your interest in Arnold & Porter. For more information on Diversity at Arnold & Porter, please feel free to contact me.

Encouraging a Diverse WorkforceRecruitment

At Arnold & Porter, we are proactive in recruiting diverse applicants to the Firm. We work with law school minority student organizations, encourage diversity throughout the legal profession, and participate in a wide range of professional initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion at all levels.

n To promote diversity in the legal profession, we offer the Arnold & Porter LLP Diversity Scholarship to highly-qualified first-year students to help pay tuition costs for the second academic year.

n We sponsor and our attorneys participate in minority receptions, job fairs, and other career development programs, such as mock interview programs.

n Each fall, our minority attorneys host special events for minority law students to whom we have offered summer associate positions. These events give offerees a chance to talk with minority attorneys at the Firm.

n During the summer, we host a panel discussion and reception for Washington, DC-area minority first-year law students, where minority attorneys share practical advice and tips on the interviewing process. Many of the students who attend this event later participate in a mock interview with members of MAP, our affinity group for minority attorneys.

n Arnold & Porter sponsors and our attorneys participate in LGBT events, including the Annual Lavender Law Career Fair, sponsored by the National LGBT Bar Association.

2 Embracing Diversity at Arnold & Porter LLP 2015

“One of the reasons why I decided to join Arnold & Porter is its commitment to diversity. After I received an offer to join the Firm’s Summer Associate program, the Firm invited me to fly back to Washington to meet more of its minority attorneys. I went out to dinner with several attorneys and remember being so impressed at how candidly and passionately they spoke about their experiences at the Firm that I accepted my offer that very day. In the years since, I have witnessed first-hand the openness and collegiality that make Arnold & Porter a special place to work — a place where the more languages one speaks, the more countries one has lived in, the more varied the career paths one has taken, the better.”Pedro G. Affinity GroupsWomen Lawyers at Arnold & Porter

Arnold & Porter has a strong history of recruiting and advancing women. In 1952, a time when many law firms refused to hire women attorneys, we hired our first woman associate, Patricia Wald, who went on to become Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals. Carolyn Agger joined the Firm as the first woman partner in 1960, and Brooksley Born was promoted to partner in 1974 while working part-time as an associate. We are proud of the opportunities the Firm has provided to women for more than 60 years and we continue that commitment today.

Women Lawyers at Arnold & Porter, known as WLAP, is the Firm’s affinity group for women attorneys. WLAP works to recruit, develop, advance and retain women, and meets periodically to discuss issues of interest to women attorneys. The group is led by a steering committee of women lawyers at all levels of seniority.

WLAP programs focus on leadership training, business development, work-life issues and community building. Recent activities include programs on making the business case for promotion to partner, and small group lunches to discuss current research, theories, articles, and books on the advancement and progress of women in business and the law. Recent topics have included Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, and what it means to have a “grit” mindset. In our Washington office, WLAP is piloting a new mentoring initiative, where groups of women attorneys of different seniority levels and practice groups meet informally on a bi-weekly basis.

WomenConnect is a networking event series in our Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC offices that brings together women attorneys and women clients. The events create personal connections between women attorneys at the Firm and introduce our women clients to other women at the Firm.

Through the Women Attorney Lunch Program, WLAP encourages women associates to have lunch with women partners and counsel for mentoring and community building. This program is available to all women attorneys in all offices.

In addition to these substantive programs, WLAP hosts summer gatherings for women attorneys and summer associates, as well as other small group gatherings of partners, counsel and associates to foster connections and communication.

“I’m proud to be at Arnold & Porter, not only because of its professional excellence, but also because of its deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. Arnold & Porter believes that diversity is critically important to its success and makes it a priority. This is why the firm has been recognized for its leadership in diversity in terms of our recruitment, retention, promotion, and representation on our firm committees. As a lawyer who grew up at the firm and a member of the hiring and professional development committees, I can attest to the firm’s tireless and unwavering efforts.

Affinity GroupsLGBT Lawyers at Arnold & Porter Arnold & Porter has a longstanding commitment to LGBT issues — both in our own workplace and in the communities we serve. LGBT attorneys serve in leadership roles throughout the Firm.

The Firm has regularly participated in the Annual Lavender Law Career Fair, sponsored by the National LGBT Bar Association, and also participates in other LGBT recruitment programs.

The Arnold & Porter affinity group of LGBT attorneys focuses on issues of interest to, and provides a professional and social network for, LGBT attorneys. The group provides mentoring opportunities and sponsors social and business development events, including for our summer associates. The Firm also embraces Pride Month by holding a variety of activities and events.

Our LGBT attorneys have been instrumental in expanding the Firm’s participation in organizations such as Lambda Legal, Marriage Equality USA, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign, local LGBT bar associations, and other organizations focused on combating LGBT discrimination.

Our pro bono engagements have included representation of individual clients in LGBT and HIV/AIDS matters, as well as major impact litigation. For example, in the aptly named Courage v. Wyoming, we were lead counsel representing four same-sex couples in a lawsuit challenging Wyoming’s same-sex marriage ban. We also were co-lead counsel representing the plaintiffs in General Synod of the United Church of Christ v. Cooper (W.D.N.C.), a federal challenge to North Carolina’s Amendment One, which not only banned same-sex marriage but also made it illegal for clergy to perform wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples. Marriage equality is only one of many issues important to the LGBT community that Arnold & Porter supports through its pro bono efforts. The Firm also has been closely involved in, for example, cases defending California’s prohibition on “conversion” therapy aimed at LGBT youth, fighting for the rights of transgendered individuals to receive government benefits in accordance with the gender with which they identify, challenging discrimination on the basis of HIV status, and supporting equal treatment of gay/straight alliances in schools. The Firm’s corporate attorneys also provide corporate and transactional support to numerous LGBT organizations.

Since 1996, the Firm has offered medical care and other benefits to domestic partners and their children (and elected to pay additional amounts to offset discriminatory federal taxes on those benefits). And Firm benefits for parental leave have long been available to staff in same-sex marriages and partnerships.

We are proud of this record, and it has been recognized by others. For eight of the last nine years, Arnold & Porter has achieved a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign on its Corporate Equality Index. In 2014, the Firm was a recipient of the Human Rights Campaign’s Ally of Justice Award and was honored with Marriage Equality USA’s Corporate Service Award.

Affinity GroupsMinorities at Arnold & Porter

Minorities at Arnold and Porter (MAP) is the affinity group for minority attorneys at Arnold & Porter. MAP serves as a professional and social network for the Firm’s minority attorneys and is dedicated to the recruitment, mentoring, retention, and professional development of minority attorneys.

Among other recent initiatives, MAP launched a speaker series, where minority clients address a broad range of topics, including career paths to success, tips for professional and career development, and managing client relationships, among others. MAP also promotes another of the Firm’s core values — public service — by coordinating hands-on opportunities to give back to the community while also bonding with one another. Recent activities include making lunches for a local homeless shelter and planting flowers for a local non-profit organization.

An annual retreat for the Firm’s minority attorneys provides professional development activities and allows MAP attorneys to discuss and offer feedback on the Firm’s diversity efforts. MAP attorneys are encouraged to discuss various perspectives and ideas for new diversity initiatives. Each year, MAP also hosts an annual forum for junior MAP associates. During this half-day forum, senior MAP attorneys provide advice on a range of topics, including work assignments, partner/counsel relations, career development, and work-life balance. Beyond organized programming, MAP encourages formal and informal mentoring relationships between junior and more senior minority associates, as well as between associates and partners.

During the summer, MAP members serve as mentors to minority summer associates. Additionally, MAP organizes a dinner each year at the home of one of our minority partners for our MAP attorneys and summer associates.

“Arnold & Porter’s commitment to diversity endows the Firm with the best and brightest lawyers from an array of different backgrounds and with a rich variety of perspectives. This not only makes Arnold & Porter an incredibly interesting and exciting place at which to practice law, it also equips the Firm to provide its clients with the most creative, informed and effective solutions to their legal problems.”

Affinity GroupsArnold & Porter Veterans & Affiliates (APVA) Arnold & Porter Veterans & Affiliates (APVA) was founded in 2014 by two associates and veterans of the US Military. APVA is Arnold & Porter’s affinity group for military veterans, individuals who served the military in a civilian capacity, and those staff members and attorneys without military experience who are interested in participating in recruiting and outreach programs, pro bono work, and internal support networks focused on improving support for active duty military members and veterans both within the firm and in the communities in which Arnold & Porter has offices. APVA’s mission is to recruit, retain and advance veterans in the firm, work with clients that share the goal of supporting military veterans and their transition into the private sector, and grow the firm’s active duty military and veteran-related pro bono and community service activities.

In addition to the numerous pro bono-related legal services Arnold & Porter has recently provided and is currently providing to veterans and military members — ranging from housing assistance to sexual assault representation — the Firm has a long and active tradition of providing pro bono legal services in support of veterans. Arnold & Porter attorneys secured a significant US Supreme Court victory in March 2011, when the Court ruled unanimously for the Firm’s client, David Henderson, a Korean war veteran who missed the deadline for filing an appeal while hospitalized for his disability, in Henderson v. Shinseki. Arnold & Porter attorneys also secured the first posthumous Presidential pardon in our nation’s history on February 19, 1999 for Lt. Henry Ossian Flipper, the first African American graduate of West Point.

In 2014, for its inaugural Veterans Day event, APVA hosted a discussion with DC Chamber of Commerce President and former Navy SEAL Harry Wingo on encouraging a veteran-friendly business community in DC. APVA also has an established relationship with Blue Star Families, where we provide financial support and organize events to aid in their work supporting military families.

“Having served in the US Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, I knew that I not only wanted to work at a firm with sophisticated work and intelligent colleagues, I also wanted to work with people that I liked and enjoyed being around. The military taught me that the people you work with make all the difference in your job satisfaction and quality of life when tackling challenging assignments and tasks. I feel fortunate to have found A&P and think that the people here are exactly what I was looking for.”

Kristen E. IttigPartner, Washington, DC Office

“Arnold & Porter lives up to its values not only by promoting a diverse workplace where we are encouraged to be our true selves, but also by making the fight for civil rights, acceptance, and diversity a core component of our work. I have been consistently impressed by my colleagues’ unparalleled dedication to pro bono matters, making sure that fairness and equality do not just inform who we are, but also what we do.”

Elliott C. MogulAssociate, Washington, DC Office

“As a member of the firm’s Hiring Committee and Minority Attorney Affinity Group, I have witnessed first-hand Arnold & Porter’s dedication to the recruitment, development, and, most importantly, retention of minority attorneys. Arnold & Porter truly strives to create an environment in which minority attorneys can grow, prosper, and succeed. What is most impressive about Arnold & Porter, however, is that — despite its proven record on the diversity front — the firm continues to believe that it can and should do better. This unparalleled standard of excellence is what places Arnold & Porter among the nation’s top law firms for minority attorneys.”
