“Patience, people, for the Lord is coming.” That refrain, from the seasonal hymn, Patience People, is inspired by the opening verse of the New Testament reading for the third Sunday of Advent, “Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord,” (James 5:7). What is patience? What is our experience of it, or the lack thereof? Many of us would say that it is one thing—maybe THE one thing—that we wish we had more of. We are familiar with the phrase, “Patience is a virtue,” and that is helpful to remember. A virtue is a disposition toward right action, a habitual inclination to the good including and especially the ultimate good, God. Virtue and habit are closely related: virtue grows through practice. So, in order to be patient, we must DO patience. Even if we pray fervently for patience, we’re not likely to fall into a pool of it as we stumble along life’s road. How do we do patience? The Letter of James uses an ancient Greek term that becomes the English, “patient.” (Yes, I have seen the movie The English Patient, and yes, it did require patience to sit through, and a nap or two). The word, makrothumeo, is a compound combining and adjective, makros, that means long lasting, or enduring and a noun, thumos, that means passion, anger, or heat. It brought to my mind cooking rice: add rice to water, bring to a boil, cover and lower heat to simmer. According the Greek of James, patience is, literally, the capacity to simmer, to keep a lid on passion until the “rice” is finished, and not to boil over or explode. It’s very much the disposition of the farmer in the reading whose livelihood and family’s wellbeing depended on his crop; he keeps his passion and anxiety in check until the late rains bring his crop to maturity. No fool, James knew how challenging the life of faith could be. So much can happen to turn up the heat on our lives, to deny our souls the early and late rains that grow our trust in God’s loving presence to maturity. And at this time of year, when we can be pulled in so many directions at once, it can easily happen that we lose our focus on the “coming of the Lord,” the reason for the season that gives purpose to patience. Practice patience… “Dear God, I pray for patience, and I want it RIGHT NOW!” You may have heard that playful take on praying for patience. One way to grow in patience may be to ask for God’s help before it’s too late. Almighty as the Lord may be, He does have several billion people, here on Earth, and an entire universe to keep an eye on. Two seconds before the volcano erupts may not be the best time to pray for patience. I like this quote very much, “By perseverance the snails reached the ark.” Can we accept ourselves as we are and refrain from punishing ourselves for failing to be patient? The proverbial snails didn’t reach the ark by wishing they were rabbits or cheetahs. I can think of people who are more patient than I. Perhaps, I can learn from their good example, but “I gotta be me,” as the song goes. There is one thing that is really helpful, but it sounds too simple: Breathe! The Biblical terms for the spirit of God are the same as for air, wind and breath: ruah, in Hebrew and pneuma, in Greek. Stopping to take a few deep breaths can give us precious seconds to re-frame a situation, consider a different approach, make a better decision, all the while reminding ourselves that the Holy Spirit is with us. May we be thankful for Our Lord’s patience with us as we prepare to celebrate His coming. Rev. David McGuigan, S.M. Associate Pastor

Inspiring the Archdiocese of Baltimore

Pope Francis named two new aux-iliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Baltimore: Monsignor Adam J.
Parker, current vicar general and modera-tor of the curia in Baltimore; and Monsi-gnor Mark E. Brennan, pastor of St. Mar-tin of Tours Parish in Gaithersburg, in the Archdiocese of Washington. The appoint-ments were announced Dec. 5 in Wash-ington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
At the same time, the pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Denis J. Mad-den, auxiliary of Baltimore since 2005. Bishop Madden submitted his resigna-tion on his 75th birthday in March 2015, as is the custom for bishops, but it was not accepted until the appointment of the new auxiliaries.
Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father for the appointments of the new bishops, which he called “an early Christmas gift” from the pope. “This is truly a joyous day in the life of the Archdiocese of Balti-more,” the archbishop said.
The bishops-designate will be ordained Jan. 19, 2 p.m., at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland.
Bishop-designate Parker was born Jan. 13, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was raised in Severna Park. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in May 2000 and was made a
monsignor in Sep-tember 2011. He will be 45 when he is ordained a bishop.
Bishop-desig-nate Brennan was born Feb. 6, 1947, in Boston. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington in May 1976. He will turn 70 a few weeks after the ordination.
Archbishop Lori said the arch-diocese has been blessed by the dedicated service of Bishop Madden. “I’m pleased that he will contin-ue serving our local church as our beloved auxiliary bishop emeritus,” the archbish-op said. “I am grateful for his selfless ser-vice and his willingness to continue serv-ing God’s people and I look forward to our continued work together.”
‘Life changes in an instant’Bishop-designate Parker said he
received a call from Archbishop Pierre Nov. 28, telling him that he had been nominated by the Holy Father as an aux-iliary bishop of the archdiocese.
“And then he asked me the question: ‘Do you accept?’ and I told him that I do accept and I pledged my fidelity to the Holy Father and thanked him for the call,” the bishop-designate said.
He said he was initially stunned, but
noted that there had been rumors he might be chosen.
“But at the same time, when that call comes and your life changes in an instant – really just in the blink of an eye – I have to admit it took me a few moments where I just needed to sit down by myself here in the office and consider and pray about what had just happened,” he said.
Bishop-designate Parker said it was a little hard for him to focus on the rest of his regular schedule of meetings that day.
“My real desire is to have a real pas-toral presence in the archdiocese in addi-tion to my role here as vicar general and moderator of the curia,” Bishop-designate Parker said. “By that I mean making visits to parishes, celebrating Sunday Masses in parishes throughout the archdiocese, cel-ebrating confirmations – which I’m really excited about doing – and also engaging

my relationship with my brother priests at a deeper level.”
At a news conference in Baltimore announcing the appointments, Bishop-designate Parker said he is honored to be following in the footsteps of the Apostles, who took to heart Jesus’ exhortation at the Ascension to “Go, make disciples,” which he said will become his motto as bishop.
Archbishop Lori said he has been “blessed to work with Bishop-elect Park-er on a daily basis for much of my time since arriving as Archbishop of Balti-more. … Bishop-elect Parker is widely regarded by his co-workers and fellow priests and is well-prepared to assume the duties of auxiliary bishop, while con-tinuing to manage the day-to-day opera-tions of the Central Services offices of the archdiocese.”
‘Total shock’Bishop-designate Brennan said getting
the call from the nuncio about his nomi-nation as a bishop was “a total shock.” Considering his stage of life and what he called “modest attainments” in the priest-hood, “I was certainly not expecting to be named a bishop by Pope Francis – or any-one else. So, it really took me completely by surprise.”
He said, “You don’t get much time to react. It ran through my mind, ‘Should I say no?’ I thought, I’ve always tried to do what the church asked of me, so if this is being asked of me now, if I don’t have a serious reason to decline, then I think I should accept, so I did.”
St. Martin of Tours Parish is known for welcoming people of various cul-tures, with Masses in English, Spanish
and French. The bishop-designate speaks all three languages.
The parish has a soup kitchen, a food pantry and a tradition of direct service to people in need.
Bishop-desig-nate Brennan said he hopes to bring a love for immi-grants to his min-istry in Baltimore, noting that as a history major in college, he studied
the experience of immigrants – especially Italian, Irish and Polish, at that time – and later as a priest worked directly with people coming to this country.
Bishop-designate Brennan said Arch-bishop Lori has asked him to be available for the Hispanic community “to do what I can to strengthen the ties of the His-panic Catholics to the archdiocese and to the parishes. So, I’m going to have to visit people and talk with people and see what’s going on, get to know the lay of the land.”
Archbishop Lori recognized Bishop-designate Brennan’s four decades of priestly service “in a variety of settings, including most recently as pastor of a large parish with a significant Spanish-speaking population.”
He added, “His pastoral leadership and experience working with Spanish-
speaking Catholics suits him well for the duties of auxiliary bishop, which include helping to oversee our efforts to grow and care for the spiritual needs of Spanish-speaking Catholics throughout the Arch-diocese of Baltimore.”
At the 12:10 p.m. Mass Dec. 5 in the undercroft of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Archbishop Lori welcomed again the new bishops-designate, con-celebrating for the first time wearing the zucchetto – a violet-colored skullcap which is one of the symbols of their new office. The archbishop noted that Advent is a time of expectations.
“I guess you might say the Archdiocese of Baltimore has been going through a very long Advent, as it has waited nearly two years for bishops to be appointed. Let me say – it was worth the wait,” Archbish-op Lori said in his homily.
“Perhaps your greatest service, in the fullness of the priesthood, is to encour-age, to inspire, to lead and to sanctify many priests and deacons and religious and seminarians and above all lay men and women, so that they can be those people, whose faith is so great, and so alive that they are constantly bringing people to Jesus. …
“In a word, you assist me in the prima-ry work of raising up missionary disciples to carry forward the church’s mission of spreading the Gospel.” ●
