HAPPENINGS The UR/East Pen Pal Program, a partnership with the Students' Association Government at the University of Rochester, was created three years ago by UR undergraduate student Lara Andree ‘20, who will be studying at Warner this spring. The program gives East High School scholars the chance to come to River Campus to get a taste of college life, participate in breakout sessions and student panels, and spend the day with their undergraduate pen pals. Warner hosted the UR/East Pen Pals in LeChase Hall in November. ANNOUNCEMENTS 2020 University Research Awards Call for Applications Applications are invited for the 2020 University Research Awards. The Request for Proposals and applications are now available. Originally called Provost’s Multidisciplinary Awards, the University Research Awards (URA) provide "seed" grants for promising, high-risk projects. The deadline for submission is Monday, February 3. Questions and completed applications should be directed to Adele Coelho at [email protected] . Search for Warner Dean Under Way Rob Clark, provost and senior vice president for research, has appointed a University committee to begin a national search for the next dean of the Warner School of Education. The committee will be chaired by Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and includes 12 faculty, staff, and students from the Warner community. Read more. Diversity Conference Call for Proposals and Posters Faculty, staff, students, and alumni are invited to submit proposals for workshops and posters for the University’s 11th Annual Diversity Conference, set for Friday, March 27. This year’s conference theme is “Equity Across our Communities.” The conference aims to explore how striving for equity improves the Greater Rochester and University communities as we aspire to live up to the expectations of Meliora. Workshop proposals should be interactive, unique, and relevant that help participants connect the stories and experiences of others for their own growth and development. The sessions should explore possibilities for creating equity in the Rochester community by examining challenges, providing actionable skills, encouraging dialogue, and empowering participants to take action. The deadline for workshop proposal is Monday, January 13. Learn more about the Diversity Conference. Participate in the 2019 Alumni Census This month, the University launched its alumni census in North America, and—if you haven’t already filled out yours online—you are encouraged to do so today. The census will help the University gain a better understanding of our alumni community so that more meaningful programs—that best represent all alumni interests—can be created. When you take the census, you will be asked for contact and preference updates, as well as voluntary self-identification information. The creation of the census was encouraged by the Diversity Advisory Council (DAC), led by University Trustees Lizette Pérez-Deisboeck '87 and Lance Drummond '85S (MBA), as well as Alumni Board and DAC member Noah Pizmony-Levy Drezner '00. The census will be open to alumni who live in countries outside of North America in 2020. Learn more and participate in the census. Faculty and Students Present at Psychology of Math Conference Jeffrey Choppin, professor and chair of teaching and curriculum; Cindy Callard, professor and executive director of the Center for Professional Development & Education Reform; and doctoral students Cynthia Carson and Zenon Borys presented or co-presented six papers at the 41st Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education held in St. Louis, Mo. in November. Callard, Choppin, and Carson co-presented "Designing and Researching Online Professional Development." Carson and Choppin co-presented "Online Video Coaching: An Analysis of Teachers' and Coaches' Noticing." Borys presented "Relating Digital Resources to Teacher Practice." Carson (pictured above) presented "How Coaches Develop Effective Online Coaching Practices." Choppin, Callard, and Carson co-presented "Exploring Qualities of a Community of Inquiry in a Synchronous Online Course." Choppin co- presented "Exploring the Discursive Differences of Mathematics Coaches Within Online Coaching Cycle Conversations." Lammers Publishes Journal Article Jayne Lammers, associate professor, co-published "Ethical Dilemmas Within Online Literacy Research" in Literacy Research: Theory, Method and Practice, vol. 68, issue 1. This article is first in a series of manuscripts about online research methods that her research team will be publishing. Read the article. Faculty and Students Present at Gerontological Scientific Meeting Silvia Sörensen, associate professor; Joyce Duckles, associate professor; and doctoral students Dorine Otieno and Zoe Shelton presented at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting in Austin, Tex. in November. Sörensen chaired the session "Strength in Age: Engaging Older Adults as Health Researchers Through Community-Based Partnerships." Sörensen and Duckles co- presented "Engaging Older Adult Learners as Health Researchers: Program Overview." Sörensen, Otieno, Shelton, and Duckles co-presented "Evaluating the Engaging Older Adult Learners as Health Researchers Project." Sörensen was also a discussant for the symposium "Future Care Planning and End-of-Life Care Decision Making: Individual and Social Influences." Judge Serves as Mentor for Ain Center Competition Mary Judge, assistant director for the Center for Disability and Education at Warner, was a mentor at the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship’s Creative Collision Challenge in November. The competition brings together students from a variety of backgrounds to brainstorm solutions to social and cultural issues in a day-long challenge. Each year, participants tackle a different issue, guided by mentors and experts to devise a solution. This year's event focused on accessibility on college campuses. Mentors are selected based on the topic of the challenge. These experts may be from a variety of fields and can assist students with their plans throughout the competition day. Teams then present to a panel of judges and top teams earn cash prizes. Cui Publishes Journal Article Doctoral student Shasha Cui published "Mainland Chinese International Students’ Perceptions on Seeking Mental Health Counseling Support on U.S. Higher Education Campuses: A Research Plan" in the Boston College Center for International Higher Education's journal Perspectives, no. 14. Read the article, which begins on page 76. Warner Represented at AESA Conference Lynn Gatto, associate professor; Nancy Ares, associate professor; alumni Thomas Noel ‘17W (PhD) and Lisa Perhamus ‘09W (PhD); and doctoral students Linh Dang and Laura Cochell presented at the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) conference in Baltimore, Md. in November. Gatto presented “Memories of a Critical Urban Classroom: Today’s Impact.” Noel presented “Teacher Flight: An Examination of Teacher Residency Requirements and Student-Teacher Relationships.” Ares chaired the session “Critical Community Building as Both Phenomenon of Interest and Foundation for a Participatory Methodology,” in which Cochell and Dang were participants.
