The UR/East Pen Pal Program, a partnership with the Students' Association Governmentat the University of Rochester, was created three years ago by UR undergraduatestudent Lara Andree ‘20, who will be studying at Warner this spring. The programgives East High School scholars the chance to come to River Campus to get a taste ofcollege life, participate in breakout sessions and student panels, and spend the day withtheir undergraduate pen pals. Warner hosted the UR/East Pen Pals in LeChase Hall inNovember.

2020 University Research Awards Call for ApplicationsApplications are invited for the 2020 University Research Awards. The Request forProposals and applications are now available. Originally called Provost’sMultidisciplinary Awards, the University Research Awards (URA) provide "seed" grantsfor promising, high-risk projects.
The deadline for submission is Monday, February 3. Questions and completedapplications should be directed to Adele Coelho at [email protected].
Search for Warner Dean Under WayRob Clark, provost and senior vice president for research, has appointed a Universitycommittee to begin a national search for the next dean of the Warner School ofEducation. The committee will be chaired by Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the HajimSchool of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and includes 12 faculty, staff, and studentsfrom the Warner community. Read more.
Diversity Conference Call for Proposals and PostersFaculty, staff, students, and alumni are invited to submit proposals for workshops andposters for the University’s 11th Annual Diversity Conference, set for Friday, March 27.This year’s conference theme is “Equity Across our Communities.” The conference aimsto explore how striving for equity improves the Greater Rochester and Universitycommunities as we aspire to live up to the expectations of Meliora. Workshop proposalsshould be interactive, unique, and relevant that help participants connect the stories andexperiences of others for their own growth and development. The sessions shouldexplore possibilities for creating equity in the Rochester community by examiningchallenges, providing actionable skills, encouraging dialogue, and empoweringparticipants to take action. The deadline for workshop proposal is Monday, January 13.Learn more about the Diversity Conference.
Participate in the 2019 AlumniCensusThis month, the University launched itsalumni census in North America, and—ifyou haven’t already filled out yoursonline—you are encouraged to do sotoday. The census will help the Universitygain a better understanding of ouralumni community so that moremeaningful programs—that bestrepresent all alumni interests—can becreated.
When you take the census, you will beasked for contact and preference updates, as well as voluntary self-identificationinformation. The creation of the census was encouraged by the Diversity AdvisoryCouncil (DAC), led by University Trustees Lizette Pérez-Deisboeck '87 and LanceDrummond '85S (MBA), as well as Alumni Board and DAC member Noah Pizmony-LevyDrezner '00. The census will be open to alumni who live in countries outside of NorthAmerica in 2020.

Lammers Publishes Journal ArticleJayne Lammers, associate professor, co-published "Ethical Dilemmas Within OnlineLiteracy Research" in Literacy Research: Theory, Method and Practice, vol. 68, issue1. Faculty and Students Present at Gerontological Scientific MeetingSilvia Sörensen, associate professor; Joyce Duckles, associate professor; and doctoralstudents Dorine Otieno and Zoe Shelton presented at the Gerontological Society ofAmerica Annual Scientific Meeting in Austin, Tex. in November.
Sörensen chaired the session "Strength in Age: Engaging Older Adults as HealthResearchers Through Community-Based Partnerships." Sörensen and Duckles co-presented "Engaging Older Adult Learners as Health Researchers: ProgramOverview." Sörensen, Otieno, Shelton, and Duckles co-presented "Evaluating theEngaging Older Adult Learners as Health Researchers Project." Sörensen was also adiscussant for the symposium "Future Care Planning and End-of-Life Care DecisionMaking: Individual and Social Influences."
Judge Serves as Mentor for Ain Center CompetitionMary Judge, assistant director for the Center for Disability and Education at Warner,was a mentor at the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship’s Creative Collision Challenge inNovember. The competition brings together students from a variety of backgrounds tobrainstorm solutions to social and cultural issues in a day-long challenge. Each year,participants tackle a different issue, guided by mentors and experts to devise a solution.This year's event focused on accessibility on college campuses. Mentors are selectedbased on the topic of the challenge. These experts may be from a variety of fields andcan assist students with their plans throughout the competition day. Teams then presentto a panel of judges and top teams earn cash prizes.
