저는 Jaclyn Sylvia FLEC 교수입니다. 제가 이번학기 강의 시간에 수업 방식에 대한 연구를 진행하려합니다. 질문을 영어로 드리는 것에 대하여 양해 부탁드립니다. To the IRB of Hannam University: My name is Jaclyn Sylvia, an employee in the Foreign Language Education Center of Hannam University. During the spring semester, I am planning to conduct research in my English conversation class. I am writing you today in order to discern whether or not I need to complete an IRB review with Hannam University. The project examines the use of one teaching method to increase student awareness of World Englishes and their own usage of one English variety, Korean English. In particular, the students will create a “Korean English Dictionary” which will challenge students to define English words unique to Korea and consider “translations” into other varieties of English. There are two major expected benefits for the students by participating in this research project: 1) 1) It is predicted that students will become more confident English speakers as they reflect on their own usage of the language. 2) 2) The students are predicted to become better cross-cultural communicators by considering how English is used differently throughout the world. As part of the research project, student will be asked to complete two surveys: one at the beginning of the spring term and one at the end of spring term. Some students might be asked to participate in a 15-minute follow-up interview. Of course, participation in the project is optional for the students and will not affect the student-teacher relationship in any way. Currently, the project has approval from the manager of FLEC in Hannam University. In addition, I have presented the project to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Indiana University, Bloomington, where I am a graduate student in the department of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education. I believe that IRB approval is not necessary from Hannam University since approval is already pending from Indiana University, Bloomington. However, I wanted to inform your department of this research in case of any issues. Thank you for taking the time to consider this email. Sincerely, Jaclyn Sylvia English teacher, Foreign Language Education Center, Hannam University Graduate student, Department of Education, Indiana University, Bloomington Email: [email protected]

There are two major expected benefits for the students by participating in this research project:

1) 1) It is predicted that students will become more confident English speakers as they reflect on their own usage of the language.

However, I wanted to inform your department of this research in case of any issues. Thank you for taking the time to consider this email.
